This Easter saw the return of the Christs school ski trip. Our students, ranging from year 8 to 10, under-
took a week of intense ski instruction, which all enjoyed and developed from. The students also en-joyed a variety of evening activities, including the baffling but exciting Austrian bowls, a trip down
Austrias biggest water flume (in which Mr McPaul got stuck for being too hairy), and a pizza making
night that involved a bizarre traditional Austrian game, where the players hammer nails into a log with
the wrong end of a hammer. Even more fun than it sounds!
Praise should be given for the outstanding behaviour of all the students, and in particular, Jack Moss
(10M), who was awarded Christs skier of the year by his peers, and instructors. Thanks also to Mrs
Young, Miss Needham, Mrs Montague, Mr Roderick, and Mr Hughes for coming along. It was fun for all
to see our staff skiing backwards (not on purpose), or indeed using their bums.
To sign up for next years Easter Ski trip, speak to Miss Needham.

On Tuesday 8th May 52 Year 10 students visited the Imperial War Museum to com-
plement the work they are embarking on for Controlled Assessment. The Museum
holds a comprehensive collection of artefacts from different wars in the twentiethcentury. Our focus was on the First World War; and students were able to explore the galleries as well
as the very smelly Trench Experience. Students also participated in a museum led session looking at
and handling original artefacts: a soldiers uniform, a
backpack, and a variety of weapons including a shell
that had been sculpted into a piece of art. The curator
also showed us some original film footage of the Battle
of the Somme, and we were amazed at the enormous
original of John Singer Sargents Gassed. A produc-
tive session and an interesting trip! The museum is cur-
rently being refurbished for a huge exhibition com-
memorating 100 years since the start of World War one.
Not to be missed!

It was something short of a miracle that after the wettest April and possibly May on record, we hadbeautiful blue skies and sunshine all day long!
The marquee was buzzing from 7.30am until 6pm with parent helpers, past parent helpers (!), future
prefects, Christs pupils past and present. Every facet of the school was represented with Mr Burke, Mrs
McGrail and other staff members turning up to support the PTA on this hugely enjoyable day.
The marquee was opened up this year and with the highly visible Christs School banners, balloons andbunting, could be spotted from some distance. Towards the end of the day we were approached bythe organisers to be told that we had been awarded Best Presented Stallof which we are extremelyproud! Credit is due to the wonderful team of parents and children who were there early to help usset up and decorate, and to those who kept the stalls going throughout the day.
The Richmond May Fair not only gives us the opportunity to fund-raise for Christs School (well over1,000 counted in so far) but also perhaps more importantly gives us a festive occasion to gather, catch up with friends face to face and bump into old acquaintances. So to all of you who helped out - by storing, collecting, delivering, sending in prizes and cakes, giving
messages of encouragement, being there and clearing up afterwardsTHANK YOU.
Good luck to those getting involved next year - theres a great team waiting to support you.

Emily Tabers update from Peru
Since my last update my plans changed quite a bit and I left Nicaraguaearly to fly directly to Peru. Just over a month has passed and so muchto tell you all. I stayed in Cusco (near to Machu Picchuone of the seven wonders of theworld) for a month. By day I was volunteering at an after school club and by evening helping ina hostel to earn my bed and breakfast! At the after school club I helped with English and ICTclasses and also prepare the weekly show which involved some kind of acting or singing! It defi-nitely was an interesting sight!I arrived here in Huancayo nearly 3 weeks ago where the Orphanage (casita) is. Words cannotdescribe how amazing it is to be back. Out of the 22 kids that are the casita, 9 of them I knewfrom last time. It is so lovely to see them 5 years older and progressing through school. I havealso been lucky enough to spend a lot of time with my godson Cristhian now 17, and his fami-ly. He is currently trying to get into university to become a Civil Engineer. The exams are hardthough, but fingers crossed he will do well in August. Each morning I go up to the casita at 9am and help the kids who go to school in the afternoonwith their homework. Then its time to go outside and play until lunchtime. By this time the kidswho go to school in the morning come back and have lunch too. More homework needs to becompleted as well as chores. I then say my farewells at 6pm until the next day. On Saturdayafternoons we go up to a playing area where we play volleyball and football. This is their onlyreal day they go out for a few hours other than school so you can probably imagine how de-lighted they were when we announced we were taking them all to the cinema to see Lorax fora treat with the money raised! In the last two weeks we have cooked homemade pizza and spag bol for 30 people whichwent down very well. On Monday with the money raised by Christs, work started on the backwall which was falling down in the garden, and once finished we will be painting a new mural.A second floor will also be built which will provide 2 more bedrooms and bathrooms and storagespace for both current and new children. Other money has gone towards scholarships for kids, clothes, new beds, food, books, crafts and much more. From the bottom of both mine and theirhearts we are so grateful for the amazing fundraising that you have all done to enable all thiswork to go ahead.Last Saturday we were invited to celebrate the birthday of 3 of the kids where a clown camealong to entertain the kids. It is tradition here that after the candles are blown out that theyhave to lick/taste a bit of the cake, which normally results in their head being dunked into thecake. As you can probably imagine, lots of giggly and happy children were running aboutwhich was wonderful to see. With only less than two weeks remaining here in Huancayo, the prospect of leaving is not nice atall. Goodbyes are the worse however I know that I will be back soon to visit.Hope all is well in the UK and see you all soon! Emily Taber

In May we had one of our PSHEE days with year 9 going on a trip to Roehampton University and a varietyof sessions held in school with year 7,8 and 10. Guest speakers included a powerful talk by Tom Fitzimmons
about his decent into alcoholism and the steps he has taken to turn his life around, and a session from ateenage pregnancy charity who offered a clear insight in to the trials and tribulations of being a youngmum.

Christs Students see the Queen in Richmond Park- 15th May 2011
In spite of the inclement weather 30 students and 5 members of staff enjoyed a wonderful dayin Richmond Park. The students were impeccably behaved as they patiently waited in the hail, wind and rain for Her Majesty to arrive. When she arrived she was whisked quickly into a mar-quee to escape the weather, and so students and staff only got a brief glimpse of the RoyalParty. Undeterred by this they marched on to Holly Lodge where they got a much better oppor-tunity to take photos. Thinking this was their last sighting of Her Majesty, they headed back toschool in the minibus. The Queen then followed the minibus with escort vehicles and their flash-ing lights and sirens, down QueensRoad where outside the school, stu-dents and staff formed an privateimpromptu flag waving crowd; thismade up for the terrible weather!

To celebrate the Diamond Jubilee we have been designing Commemorative Tea Towels in graphics withYear 8 students as part of an Enterprise Project. The winning designer will have their design printed profes-
sionally onto tea towels. They will then be able to sell the tea towels to their family, friends and the school
community. For every tea towel sold, the winning student will receive a percentage of the profit made.
The students began by drawing their designs by hand and then scanning the individual elements into the
computer. They then used CAD software to develop the images and create their designs.
7 designs were initially selected from the class and staff and students were asked to vote on which de-
sign was the most successful. The designs shown here were voted the top three during our Jubilee Tea
Party. Staff and students will be asked to vote on the best of these three designs and the chosen design
will be printed onto the tea towels, ready for sale after half term.

Textiles Jubilee Wall HangingTo celebrate the Diamond Jubilee this year students in Textiles have been working on a special com-
memorative wall hanging displaying many different embroidery and applique techniques.
Once finished the Wall hanging will be displayed in the Technology Corridor for all to admire!
I would like to offer many thanks to the PTA for the generous contribution towards the cost of the fabrics.

GCSE Art Exhibition
This years GCSE art exhibition was a huge success thanks
to the dedication and efforts of so many creative art stu-
dents under the superb guidance of Mr McPaul and Miss
Jacobs. Being greeted at the door by the Art Depart-
ments cardboard dog mascot sets the imaginative and
experimental tone of the show. No one students work is
the same, with independent, self-directed learning being
the ethos at the core of the Art Department's approach to
the course. This truly shows in the plethora of approaches
the students have taken to each project and the variety
of media.
Students have been fantastically imaginative: some used
discarded, PE crash mats as the canvases for large scale,
contemporary works; others made exciting and experi-
mental animations; and one student even constructed askeleton out of papier-mch. Our GCSE stu-
dents work was inspired by a wide variety of tal-
ented artists such as Salvador Dali, Banksy, Dan
Hayes, Rankin and Shaun Tan to create ambitious
and challenging contemporary art. Congratula-
tions to all the studentsa fantastic job and a
veritable cultural feast!
Year 10 pupils held a Jubilee Tea party to celebrate theQueens 60th anniversary. The pupils carried out a six weekproject in which they research and planned the eventwhich included buffet foods. This was held on the schoolfield during lunch time and was a great success as the
weather was nice.Ms Conteh

Sports News
For the second year in succession, the Year 10 girls Rugby league team were
competing at a national level after finishing as runners up in the southern
England finals at Surrey Sports Park in Guildford.
After a long drive to Derby, the girls played matches against teams from
Castlefield, Cumbria and St Helens in their group stages. Each game was
fiercely competitive and the standard much higher than last year. The girls
held their own in each of the games, but each of the opposition had one or
two players of incredible standards that were
able to change the course of the game by
themselves, and consequentially lost narrowly in
each of their matches.
The progress that the team had made was com-
mented upon by RFL officials and particular
praise was reserved for Frankie Storer, Kim Berg
and Selina Hussein who all played outstandingly
in defence and attack.

Year 7&8 have been benefiting from professional coach-
ing as part of the PE departments drive to improve tech-
nical standards in the boys football teams. Sessions are
based upon developing technique and using it in games
better. There are plenty of spaces available for students
to take part in the club which takes place on Thursdays
after school.

Sports Captains and Sports Council
In the first week of term, all form groups will be asked to vote for their representatives for the new sports
council. This will allow student representatives to air their views on a number of issues that surround
school sport and the way it impacts their participation.
Christs School gets in the Olympic Mood
Christs School, Richmond was the host to the first in a series of Olympic Festivals in the build
up to the Games. 80 pupils from nearby primary schools (St. Elizabeths, Holy Trinity, East
Sheen, Kew Riverside & Marshgate) came to enjoy a fun filled morning of activities based around anOlympic theme. Ably led by a group of enthusiastic and organised Year 9 Leaders the pupils from Year
1 were taught how to do the activities before embarking on a team competition. Heather Jackson,
Christs Sports Co-ordinator was delighted with how the event went. The Year 9s did a fantastic job
teaching the youngsters and they certainly seemed to have a good time. One primary school pupil
asked if he could come back EVERY Friday which is tantamount to the energy and enthusiasm the
Christs pupils put in. We are looking forward to running a number of these in the next couple of months.
Year 6 pupils in local primary schools are also enjoying the new facilities at Christs School. 30 pupils from
local primary schools have been invited to spend the afternoon at the School learning how to use the
new climbing wall and the archery facilities. These are two completely new experiences for the pupils
and seem to be a huge hit so far. The aim is to try and offer this opportunity to as many primary pupils as
possible before the end of term.

Aim: Unite all secondary schools in the Richmond School Sport Partnership in an Olympic Torch Relay.
The torch relay will pass from one secondary school to the next, linking students from each school in thevalues of the Olympic and Paralympic games. Each school will nominate students to represent them, signifying excellence and equality. Each school will also create their own Olympic torch to hand overto a neighbouring school as a 2012 Olympic gift in an act of inspiration, friendship and respect.
Route: The relay will begin at Richmond Park Academy with a Richmond SSP opening ceremony andlocal Future Olympian. The school students will relay to every secondary school before finishing atHampton Academy for the end celebration that will welcome the 2012 Olympics to London.
Design Your Olympic Torch: Richmond SSP is holdingan Olympic Torch Relay around the Richmond Sec-ondary schools. Each school should design and cre-ate an Olympic Torch for their students to carry to aneighbouring school. The torch should represent yourschool and be presented to the next school in the re-lay as a 2012 gift that represents the Olympic valuesof Friendship and Respect.

Dear Parents/Carers,
The Summer Term is finally beginning to feel like summer, with warm sunshine reflecting on my windows as I
write this update.
Since the last Christs Chronicles weve had Lent and Easter. During Lent we focussed on fundraising for
charity. The two charities that the students wanted to support were Sports Relief and Momentum (a local
charity providing care for children with life-threatening illnesses and their families). Through a Sports Relief
sponsored mile organised by the PE Department, students raised 2,932.19. National televised charity
events like Sports Relief, Comic Relief and Children in Need tend to catch the imagination of the students
and give them an enthusiasm for fund-raising that is greater than for local charities. Even so, alongside
their great total for Sports Relief the students raised a further 364.61 for Momentum from cake sales and
competitions.
Our Easter Service explored the qualities of people who stand by us in time of trouble and those who run
away. We used 3 monologues written by members of the school Creative Writing Group. Gabriel Alveteg
(10M) told the disciple Peters story, Abi Houghton-Brown (9M) wrote the part for Mary, the Mother of Je-
sus, and Katy Banks (10M) prepared Mary Magdalenes words. Jack Moss was Peter, Ms Conteh and Ms
Lauria played the two Marys. Josh Coster (8A), Emma Woodward (7M) and Tyler Baker (7A) led the pray-
ers and lighting of candles. Yr 9 art students painted a 1.5m high abstract picture of the people at the foot
of the cross in the Good Friday story which helped create a focal point in the service.
After this half term we will be running a daily lunchtime programme of activities in the Chapel led by stu-
dents, staff, and members of local churches. These activities will range from art sessions, to learning to
meditate and be still inside, exploring relationships, doing quizzes and engaging with bible stories. Were
setting up a team of student Chapel Monitors to help keep the Chapel a tidy and positive place to be. Asmall team of prefects have become involved in running lunchtime activities in the Chapel, as well as be-
ing present to support younger students and to help them understand how to behave in the space.
Year 9s are studying pilgrimage as part of their RS curriculum so weve been running mini -pilgrimages
around school to give them an experience of pilgrimage rather than just talking about it. On the walk
around school theyve reflected on their human experience as they think about the key stories of Jesus
death and resurrection which form the climax of pilgrimages ending in Jerusalem. Questions they an-
swered as part of this have been: How can I be a more caring person? When life is hard what qualities
would help me cope better? What have my mistakes taught me so far? What have I valued most from
other people when things have been tough for me? What is forgiveness? Why is it important not to humili-
ate others? What can I do to make sure Im not part of the crowd destroyingthe goodness of life? We used modern paintings of the stations of the cross to
focus our reflections, and thanks to the sun were able to spend time outside
as well as ending our pilgrimage in the Chapel, as you can see from the pho-
tos below.
Starburkes remains popular and Beth, one of the Youth Workers who helps
with the caf, is available to help students with homework while Starburkes is
open.
I hope you have a lovely half term break.
Every blessing,
Ruth
