An Amnesty International Youth Group has started at Christs school. Every Tuesday at 12:30in Mr Butlers classroom there will be a meeting for students to attend, where we will discussissues that relate to amnesty international. We will choose and research an issue and then

ca rry out a ca mp aign to raise a wa reness of its importa nce . This ca mp aign c ould b e a ny-

thing, for example, we could ask the whole school to sign a petition, which we could then

give it to our Mem be r of Parliam ent, to show our supp ort of t he p articular issue. As found ers

of the Amnesty International youth group at Christs, we believe that the club will provide anopportunity for students to develop their campaigning and arguing skills and have an effect

on a n issue the y feel pa ssionate ly abo ut. We hop e to see as many p eop le as possible at ournext me eting, o n Tuesda y 17th Ap ril 2012.

    Sports Relief at Christs

I came home tired but happy. My school, Christs

scho ol, had orga nised a one mile wa lk for spo rt relief. It

wa s a lovely sunny da y and mo st of the stud ents and

staff ha d e njoyed t he eve nt. Som e c am e in PE kit and

som e in uniform but w e a ll too k pa rt. It was a g reat ide a

to ra ise m one y for spo rt relief.

    A c ake sale w as also he ld b y som e o f our stud ent s in

our own food te ch room. It felt good to ge t outside dur-

ing the school d ay. It was a win, win situation be ca use

we e njoyed the fresh air and g etting o ut of the class room, we promo ted hea lthy life styles and

exercise, a nd in do ing so, raised mo ney fo r cha rity.

As a rewa rd, we all received a spo rt relief me da l at the end o f the wa lk. What e ntertained m e

the m ost wa s to see how ma ny stude nts tried to c om plete the w alk in their own style, for in-

stanc e, as a three legg ed race , on a ll fours, or just running. I loo k forwa rd to seeing how muc h

    money we raised.

    'Upsta irs Downstairs'

As a b ig fan of 'Downto n', I wa s expec ting to e njoy the sec ond series of

the BBCs revival 70s show Upstairs Downstairs. They are both similar in

principle, but not in practice. While 'Downtons' ingenuity lies in the fact

tha t it is ba sed around t he intrica te g oings on of the house, 'Upstairs Dow nsta irs' is mo re co n-

ce rned w ith the w orld at large a nd this do es not ma ke for plea sant viewing. 'Upstairs Downstairs'

is a lot more highbrow in the sense that it informs while it entertains while 'Downton' is a lot

mo re bree zy with its histo ry and rathe r more p op ulist. While w orld eve nts suc h as World War 2 are

used in 'Upsta irs Dow nsta irs', as a b asis of a sto ryline , histo rica l events suc h as the Spanish flu pa n-

de mic in 'Downto n' are used t o ge t rid of aw kward unwa nted c harac ters (hence po pulist). But

bo th share the fa c t that t hey revolve around c lass and the p at ernalistic relat ionship bet wee n

servant a nd ma ster. Beyond tha t, howe ver, they differ.

So go ing b ac k to my g reat expec ta tions for 'Upstairs Downstairs', after w atc hing the first e pisod e

I felt let down as I felt it wasnt really a period drama, more a documentary about the war with

a rathe r two -dimensional family at t he helm. I found it ted ious and rather annoying and thoug ht

the storyline with the girl with do wn syndrome to b e m ost od d a nd no t at all relevant to the rest

of the p lot. It was full of ne a r misses and p ec uliarities as the storyline sta rted to g rip a nd t hen just

changed track. Its quite obvious to me that the BBC have failed to make a period drama of

quality and have fallen to the might of 'Downton', but Im sure if the Dowager Countess had to

commiserate with the Hollands in 165 Eaton Place, shed say dont be defeatist dear, its so

    middle class.

    Goodbye Wenger?

After Arsenals 2-1 defeat at the Emirates against Manchester United, many Arsenal fans

were a ngry and d isap pointed . A lot of t his ang er was direc ted at Arsene Weng er (the man-

ag er of the c lub) after he ma de wha t some would say was a horrific d ec ision. After going 1-

0 down from a go od M anc hester goal, Arsenal need ed a goa l, and a fter half time and 16

minutes they got one. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain made a brilliant pass to Robin Van Persie,

    who finished with c lass.

After this, something ludicrous happened. Chamberlain was substituted for Andrey Arshavin. Chamberlain

had bee n playing w ell all gam e a nd t here were no signs of fatigue, so this co nfused a fe w fa ns. The a wful

thing wa s that after this Arshavin ma de a huge d efensive error which led to a sec ond Manc hester Unitedgoa l from Danny Welbec k. This wa s in fact the w inning go al. The q uestion now though, w hat wa s Wenger

    thinking?

Peop le ca n say the reason Arsenal lost wa s bec ause the numbe r of players who are injured and aw ay on

national duty, but nobody can say that the substitution didnt have a huge effect of the way the game

turned out. For some Arsena l fans this wa s the last straw , and there w as sudd enly a h orrible rea lisat ion for

the fans. Why cant Arsenal close games? Why have they not won a trophy for seven years? Why is there

not spending in the transfer window?

The answer was quickly found to these questions, Arsene Wenger. Wengers been at the club for 15 years

now , and t he first eight ye ars we re mag ica l for Arsena l fans. These pa st seve n yea rs hav e b een a night-

ma re filled w ith nea r misses an d e mb arrassme nts. If Arsena l wan t to h ave eve n a small cha nc e of finishing

in the to p fo ur this yea r, the y must sta rt buying p layers now ! The c lub is suspe c ted to ha ve a round 40 mil-

lion pounds to spend. Wenger may have been meticulous with spending in the past, but he cant be

now , otherwise Arsena l will lose out o n 30 million po und s of revenu e from the Cha mp ions Lea gue .

    Cha rlie Stillwell

Well do ne to a ll three stude nts. There's just one m ore de ad line to m ee t, at the end of Ap ril, and if they

ac hieve that the y will rec eive a letter of recog nition from the Local Gua rdian.

A Me ssag e f rom o ur cha pla in Ruth Sc ot t

Dea r Parents and Ca rers,

At this time o f yea r there are va rious fund-raising a ct ivities go ing on in sch ool for

our Lent C harities - Mom entum and Spo rts Relief. Mome ntum is a loc al c harity

supp orting c hildren with ca nc er and life-limiting c ond itions in Surrey a nd South

East Lond on. The c ha rity also offe rs on-g oing c are for pa rents expe rienc ing be reave me nt. Bianc a Ef-

femey, the charitys director, came in and led two of our assemblies which had a powerful impact on

    many of our students.

Through Lent there hav e be en c ake sales, and c om pe titions to g uess the num be r of swe ets/Easter eggs

in the jar. 7B are planning a Guess the Staff Member competition and are collecting lots of baby pho-tos of sta ff in prepa ration for tha t. We will be pa rticip ating in the Spo rts Relief Mile. Sc hoo l sta ff hav e

also be en having a wee kly Lent lunch of soup a nd b read, and ma king d ona tions for that to the c hari-

    ties.

During Lent the re has also b een a Lent Dete ctives co mpe tition w ith a we ekly cartoon b ased on a Bible

story and que stions to answer.

The student caf, Starburkes, continues to be popular with students and staff. We have stopped selling

fizzy drinks like Coc a Cola, and we are trying t o g et m ore Fairtrad e p roducts. We have ma de enoug h

money to buy games like Giant Jenga for the caf, and were discussing ways of developing its ap-

peal. Im really grateful to Beth Lewis from the Richmond Team, and Erin Gilmour from Holy Trinity who

help me run Starburkes. Without them it would not be possible.

Through this term Yr 8 have be en co ming into th e C hap el d uring RE lessons in small groups of 15 to learn

ab out the t hings we have in the Cha pel, explore p ersonal identity and t he ethics around o ne ma jor

news story. Theyve also experienced being silent and found to their surprise that it was relaxing, helpedthem co nce ntrate a nd e nab led them to w ork more effectively. One Yr 9 RE class have also spent a les-

son in the Cha pe l learning ab out Lent, and, as part of the reflec tion time, articulating the question

about life that puzzles them most at present. They each wrote their question on a Postcard to God

which they decorated and then discussed with the group. They wondered such things as, Why do we

feel pain?, Why do we hate?, Why is life so unfair to some people and not others?, What is God?

and Why do people hurt each other?

Many students use the Chap el at lunchtimes. Sad ly, we ca n only have it op en d uring break a nd

lunchtime if there is supervision. A minority of students have not been good at caring for the space,

have left it in a m ess, or not used it app ropriate ly. Others have found it a really goo d spa ce to b e in.

During Lent weve had a weekly lunchtime Eucharist.

In prepa ration for the Easter service some o f our art stud ents

have b een p ainting a p iece tha t will eventually hang in the

Cha pe l. Stud ents from our Creative Writing Group h ave pro-

duced some of the scripts that other students and staff will be

reading. I hope you have a lovely holida y and a blessed East-

    er.

    Eve ry Blessing,

    Ruth

    The Cha l leng e

    Dear Parent/Guardian,

The Challenge has recently been to Christs School to present an amazing and exclusive summeropportunity, taking place after their GCSE's exams. It is an chance for your son/daughter to gain

substantial skills in communication, leadership and teamwork - all skills which top employers, uni-

versities and colleges look for when considering their applications.

The Challenge is delivered by The Challenge Network, which is the largest provider of National Citi-

zen Service, the Governments new youth development policy.

The first two weeks are residential, with all meals and accommodation provided. During the first

week, young people take on intensive outdoor challenges such as abseiling and hiking. Next, they

spend an inspiring week in university accommodation, gaining skills in an area they are passionate

about, such as sport, drama or enterprise. The final week of the programme sees the young people

design their own community project, which they then put into action over four days in the early au-

    tumn.

If you would like more information, please visit our website www.the-challenge.org or contact

Michelle Huxter on 07785 613 907. You can also email her at [email protected]
