Feast of All Saints Christians have been honoring saints and martyrs since at least the 2nd century. Initially various places celebrated feasts honoring the saints, and particularly martyrs on various days. The first reference to a general feast celebrating all saints occurs in St. Ephrem the Syrian in 373. Our current date, November 1, probably originates from the time of Pope Gregory III in 741. The vigil (day/evening before) the feast has grown up in the English speaking countries as a festival called All Hallows Eve, or Halloween. While some Christians refuse to observe the holiday, considering it to be pagan, as far as the Church is concerned, the date is simply the eve of the feast of All Saints. Many customs of Halloween reflect the Christian belief that on the feast’s vigil we mock evil, because as Christians, it has no real power over us. In the Middle Ages poor people in the community begged for “soul cakes,” and upon receiving these doughnuts, they would agree to pray for departed souls. (The cakes had round circles in the middle symbolizing eternal life.) This is the root of our modern day “trick-or-treat.” The custom of masks and costumes developed to mock evil and perhaps confuse the evil spirits by dressing as one of their own. Some Christians visit cemeteries on Halloween (or All Souls Day), not to practice evil, but to commemorate departed relatives and friends, with picnics and flowers.
All Souls Day
The day after the Feast of All Saints is the Feast of All Souls. This is a day to remember and offer prayers on behalf of all of the faithful departed. In many cultures it seems the two days share many customs. Except for the saints who have been officially declared by the Church, we cannot know for sure the state of the souls of the faithful departed. We pray that those who have gone before us are in heaven, or perhaps purgatory. Purgatory is a state of final purification after death and before entrance into heaven for those who have died in God’s friendship, but were only imperfectly purified. Thus it is a final cleansing of human imperfection before one is able to enter the joy of heaven (Catechism of the Catholic Church #’s 1031, 1472). So the Feast of All Souls is a special day when the entire Church can come together and pray for those who are still on their spiritual journey to be with God in eternity in heaven. Of course no one is completely with God until the Final Judgment of Jesus when he returns for the second time (see Matthew 25). On that day all of the righteous will be raised and will live forever with the risen Christ. The resurrection of the body means not only that the immortal soul will live on after death, but that even our “mortal bodies” (Romans 8:11) will come to life again. (Catechism of the Catholic Church # 988).

Fiesta de todos los Santos Los cristianos han honrado a Santos y mártires desde al menos el siglo 2. Inicialmente varios lugares celebraban fiestas en honor a los Santos y particularmente los mártires por varios días. La primera referencia a una fiesta general que se celebra a todos los Santos ocurre en St Ephrem en Syrian en 373. Día de los Muertos El día después de la fiesta de todos Santos es la fiesta de todas las almas. Este es un día para recordar y ofrecer oraciones en nombre de todos los fieles difuntos. En muchas culturas en esos dos días comparten muchas costumbres. Excepto para los Santos que han sido declarados oficialmente por la iglesia y no podemos saber con certeza el estado de las almas de los fieles difuntos. Oramos para que aquellos que nos han precedido estén en el cielo, o tal vez en el Purgatorio. El Purgatorio, es un estado de purificación final después de la muerte y antes de la entrada al cielo, para aquellos que han muerto en la amistad de Dios, pero fueron sólo imperfectamente purificados. Por lo tanto, es la última limpieza de la imperfección humana antes de que uno es capaz de entrar en la alegría del cielo (Catecismo de la Iglesia Católica de # 1031, 1472). Por lo tanto, el Día de Todos los Santos es un día especial en que toda la Iglesia puede reunirse y orar por aquellos que están aún en su camino espiritual para estar con Dios en la eternidad del cielo. Por supuesto nadie está totalmente con Dios hasta el juicio Final de Jesús cuando regrese por segunda vez (ver Mateo 25).
Ese día todos los justos resucitarán y vivirán para siempre con Cristo resucitado. We will have a special table in the Narthex for pictures of our deceased loved ones. Please bring your pictures of those loved ones labeled with their name and relationship. Please make sure your name and phone number is on the back of each picture. You will need to bring the pictures to the tables in the Narthex starting on Wednesday October 28.. The Serra Club of North Houston Inducted 50 new Serra members at St. Ignatius on Wednesday, October 21st. Serra Chaplain and
Con-Celebrant, Fr. James Burkart, Celebrant, Fr. Norbert Maduzia Jr. and Con-Celebrant Fr. Christian Bui, Deacon Nick Thompson, Acolytes: Matthew Suniga and Vincent Nguyen served in the
most beautiful Mass and Serra Induction Service. You could definitely feel the excitement and Holy Spirit’s presence. The Christus Center was packed with Serrans and delicious food afterwards. One person said it felt like a bit of heaven. Larry Massey, our Serra District Governor,
attended and said it was like a miracle. The Holy Spirit truly loves Serra! The Serrans foster and promote Vocations to the Priesthood and consecrated life, encourage and affirm Vocations to
consecrated religious life and assist its members to recognize and respond in their own lives to God’s call to holiness in Jesus Christ and through the Holy Spirit.
