CHRIST CHURCH CATHEDRAL, NELSON Sunday Bulletin – 27 th October 2019- 19 th Sunday after Pentecost Welcome to Christ Church Cathedral, Nelson. Children are welcome at our services. The chair will be filled by Kerry Abrahams who is quite a well-known local who attends All Saints Church and is also an organist. Welcome Kerry to this new role for the next few weeks. After the 10am service we will be having a barbeque. Thanks to Paul and Steve who have orchestrated this. How about if we make this a regular feature in January during the tourist season? This coming week I have a meeting with Bev Greig to see how we can fit the now record number of 57 Christmas trees for our Christmas Tree Festival. We may have to enlargen the Cathedral! Then on Thursday morning the music team will be meeting to look at Christmas music. If you have a favourite or an idea, please let Jane, Melanie, Patsy, Steve or myself know. Later that day I’ll be attending the Mayor’s formal re-admittance of Office, and then later in the evening I’ll be meeting with Bishop Steve. On Friday we have our second to last CAMEO of the year, so bring a friend as we meet together to sing, eat, laugh, share stories, and pray. Next Sunday at 10 o’clock we will be graced with the Nelson Male Choir during our 10am service. A couple of Sundays ago we had 45 attend our 7pm Word & Worship Service. We acknowledge on Labour Day the great work our forefathers and mothers to address such issues as exploitation of workers and the improvement of their conditions.

CHRIST CHURCH CATHEDRAL, NELSON

Sunday Bulletin – 27th October 2019- 19th Sunday after Pentecost

Welcome to Christ Church Cathedral, Nelson. Children are welcome at our services.

There are toys in the Quiet Room. Please feel free to take this publication away with you.

Dear Cathedralites In this morning’s sermons I will be playing a poignant, painful-sounding piece of

music by the “Five Blind Boys of Alabama”. It is entitled “The Cross” a reminder that

a 33yr old bringing peace to the world, was tortured and killed. This morning we

acknowledge the Suffering Church Sunday and lament the death of so many

Christians around the world.

What a thrill it is for Teresa and her family, over the next three weeks, as her mum

from South Africa visits her in Nelson. So, Teresa will be away from the office until

November 18th. The chair will be filled by Kerry Abrahams who is quite a well-known

local who attends All Saints Church and is also an organist. Welcome Kerry to this

new role for the next few weeks.

After the 10am service we will be having a barbeque. Thanks to Paul and Steve who

have orchestrated this. How about if we make this a regular feature in January during

the tourist season?

This coming week I have a meeting with Bev Greig to see how we can fit the now

record number of 57 Christmas trees for our Christmas Tree Festival. We may have

to enlargen the Cathedral!

Then on Thursday morning the music team will be meeting to look at Christmas

music. If you have a favourite or an idea, please let Jane, Melanie, Patsy, Steve or

myself know. Later that day I’ll be attending the Mayor’s formal re-admittance of

Office, and then later in the evening I’ll be meeting with Bishop Steve.

On Friday we have our second to last CAMEO of the year, so bring a friend as we

meet together to sing, eat, laugh, share stories, and pray.

Next Sunday at 10 o’clock we will be graced with the Nelson Male Choir during our

10am service.

A couple of Sundays ago we had 45 attend our 7pm Word & Worship Service.

We acknowledge on Labour Day the great work our forefathers and mothers to

address such issues as exploitation of workers and the improvement of their

conditions.

cup.

• Grape juice is available at communion.

• Gluten free wafers are available.

• Hearing Aid Loop available - please turn to the T position on your hearing aid ALSO

• Ramp for access to the Sanctuary (on the right side)

• Special chairs are available from the Pulpit side for those with disabilities or back problems.

Note that the leg height can be adjusted to suit.

HEALTH ADVISORY NOTICE: Worshippers experiencing Cold or Influenza-like illnesses or

associated symptoms are advised to refrain from partaking of the practice of “Intinction” with the

wafer or using the “Common Cup” during the communion ceremony. Clearly labelled wine and fruit

juice alternatives are provided utilising the small thimble glasses. This recommendation is an

important personal and public health issue which conforms with the Cathedral’s Health & Safety

whose lives are often cut short as they live in oppressive political regimes who are

hostile to Christianity.

Mike

may live victoriously now and forever; through Jesus Christ our Saviour. Amen.

Joel 2:23-32 23 O children of Zion, be glad and rejoice in the Lord your God; for he has given the early rain for your vindication, he has poured down for you abundant rain, the early and the later rain, as be-fore.24 The threshing floors shall be full of grain, the vats shall overflow with wine and oil.25 I will repay you for the years that the swarming locust has eaten, the hopper, the destroyer, and the cutter, my great army, which I sent against you.26 You shall eat in plenty and be satisfied and praise the name of the Lord your God, who has dealt won-drously with you. And my people shall never again be put to shame.27 You shall know that I am in the midst of Is-rael, and that the Lord, am your God and there is no other. And my people shall never again be put to

shame.28 Then afterward I will pour out my spirit on all flesh; your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, and your young men shall see visions.29 Even on the male and female slaves, in those days, I will pour out my spirit. 30 I will show portents in the heavens and on the earth, blood and fire and columns of smoke. 31 The sun shall be turned to darkness, and the moon to blood, be-fore the great and terrible day of the Lord comes. 32 Then everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved; for in Mount Zion and in Jerusa-lem there shall be those who escape, as the Lord has said, and among the survi-vors shall be those whom the Lord calls.

2 Timothy 4:6-8, 16-18

6 As for me, I am already being poured out as a libation, and the time of my de-parture has come. 7 I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. 8 From now on there is reserved for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will give me on that day, and not only to me but also to all who have longed for his appearing. 16 At my first defence no one came to my support, but all deserted me. May it

not be counted against them! 17 But the Lord stood by me and gave me strength, so that through me the mes-sage might be fully proclaimed and all the Gentiles might hear it. So, I was res-cued from the lion’s mouth. 18 The Lord will rescue me from every evil attack and save me for his heavenly kingdom. To him be the glory forever and ever. Amen.

Luke 18:9-14 9 He also told this parable to some who trusted in themselves that they were righteous and regarded others with contempt: 10 “Two men went up to the

temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. 11 The Pharisee, standing by himself, was praying thus, ‘God, I thank you that I am not like

other people: thieves, rogues, adulter-ers, or even like this tax collector. 12 I fast twice a week; I give a tenth of all my income.’ 13 But the tax collector, standing far off, would not even look up to heaven, but was beating his breast and saying, ‘God, be merciful to me, a sinner!’ 14 I tell you, this man went down to his home justified rather

than the other; for all who exalt them-selves will be humbled, but all who humble themselves will be exalted.”

Psalm 119:1-8

Ecclesiastes 11 1 Send out your bread upon the waters, for after many days you will get it back.2 Divide your means seven ways, or even eight, for you do not know what disaster may happen on earth. 3 When clouds are full, they empty rain on the earth; whether a tree falls to the south or to the north, in the place where the tree falls, there it will lie. 4 Whoever observes the wind will not sow; and whoever regards the clouds will not reap.5 Just as you do not know how the breath comes to the bones in

the mother’s womb, so you do not know the work of God, who makes eve-rything. 6 In the morning sow your seed, and at evening do not let your hands be idle; for you do not know which will prosper, this or that, or whether both alike will be good. 7 Light is sweet, and it is pleasant for the eyes to see the sun. 8 Even those who live many years should rejoice in them all; yet let them remember that the days of darkness will be many. All that comes is vanity.

Page 6: CHRIST CHURCH CATHEDRAL, NELSON · 2019-10-25 · 10am service condition CHRIST CHURCH CATHEDRAL, NELSON Sunday Bulletin – 27th October 2019- 19th Sunday after Pentecost Welcome

9 Rejoice, young man, while you are young, and let your heart cheer you in the days of your youth. Follow the incli-nation of your heart and the desire of your eyes, but know that for all these

things God will bring you into judg-ment. 10 Banish anxiety from your mind, and put away pain from your body; for youth and the dawn of life are vanity.

2 Timothy 2:1-7 1 You then, my child, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus; 2 and what you have heard from me through many witnesses entrust to faithful people who will be able to teach others as well. 3 Share in suffering like a good sol-dier of Christ Jesus. 4 No one serving in the army gets entangled in everyday af-fairs; the soldier’s aim is to please the

enlisting officer. 5 And in the case of an athlete, no one is crowned without competing according to the rules. 6 It is the farmer who does the work who ought to have the first share of the crops. 7 Think over what I say, for the Lord will give you understanding in all things.

WELCOMERS FOR CHRISTMAS TREE FESTIVAL

Chris Fitchett is organising the roster for volunteer welcomers during the Christmas Tree Festival. If you are able to take part, could you please write your name on the draft roster in the quiet room, on the days and times that you are able to help. Ideally, we would like to have two welcomers ros-tered for each time spot, but that may not be feasible, and so the first priority is to have at least one welcomer on at all times. If you are able to help could you please also email Chris with your email address so that he can con-tact you if necessary, and to send out a final-ised copy of the roster for your information. If you do not have email, could you please give him your phone number.

NELSON GOSPEL DAY You are invited to Nelson Gospel Day on 14th December. Volunteers from all over the Top of the South are going to read the New Testament non-stop from beginning to end at the Cathedral steps.

This is a tremendous chance to: • Share the real Christmas message in its proper context, which is the whole New Testament! • Spread the Good News the way it was shared before the New Testament existed, as recorded in Acts! • Use the freedom to share God's Word while we have it, as Christians around the world would love to be able to do! The entire New Testament takes about 20-24 hours to read and people will do15 minute readings so we will need 80 - 100 readers.

Book a time today and let your friends know! Email [email protected] / the online form (PC version) (Mobile phone version)

If you would like to help in any way or if you have questions, please feel free to email [email protected]. / Facebook / or Sean on 0273512750 (12-1pm/after 5 on weekdays, all day Saturday + after 12 Sundays).

SUFFERING CHURCH ACTION AND

AWARENESS WEEK

This Barnabas Fund project is being observed

specially at the 10 am Eucharist. They estimate

that "at least one in ten Christians globally face

persecution or discrimination for their faith in Je-

sus Christ... Every day our brothers or sisters suf-

fer violence, kidnap, rape an even lose their

lives because they are Christians.''

"Blessed are those who are persecuted for

righteousness' sake, for theirs is the kingdom of

heaven." This Beatitude seems counter-intuitive,

but they are suffering in a just cause, and they re-

ceive the same promise as the poor.

Persecution is part of Dietrich Bonhoeffer's Cost

of Discipleship; as he wrote, it is Christ's call from

the Cross, ''Blessed are you when people

revile you ... great is your reward in heaven ", as

Bonhoeffer said when he walked to the gallows,

''This is the end; for me the beginning of life''.
