WELCOME TO CHRIST CHURCH CATHEDRAL Children are welcome at our services. There are toys in the Quiet Room.
Please feel free to take this publication away with you.
Dear Cathedralites
This morning we continue the epic sermon preached by Jesus at the beginning of his
ministry as recorded in Luke 4. Having started off so well and received the accolades
from the locals of Nazareth, we see Jesus going from hero to zero in his insistence that
salvation is for everybody, both Jew, gentile, male, female, irrespective of age, race,
nationality, etc. The locals turned on him in a shocking way. There always has been and
always will be a cost in promoting justice, fairness and equity. There is always a cost in
speaking out, that’s why many don’t.
There was a good turn-out of Nelson clergy to the induction of Matt Watts as Vicar of
Westport, Granity and Karamea last Tuesday. It was good to see Bishop Richard and
Hilary there as well as he played a major part in securing the appointment. Patsy and I
managed to walk along the beach at Cape Foulwind and understood where the name
came from!
Then on Wednesday night at Bev and Fred Greig’s place, a group gathered to plan for
our next Christmas tree festival. There is a sense of excitement and expectation. If you
want to join the team, see Bev Greig or Jocelyn Smith.
Once again, my thanks to Sally and her catering team for the excellent work at CAMEO
on Friday. While we were eating, singing, talking and laughing, we shared
memories of our first days at school which for some seemed like just yesterday. It was
lovely catching up with Morris North and Marian Cumming with us over the weekend.
Morris was my Treasurer at St. Christopher’s and he masterminded the opening of 3 or
4 bookshops now known as St. Christopher’s bookshops. What he has achieved through
this has been absolutely fantastic.
It’s lovely that the Adams Festival is making use of our wonderful cathedral for a concert
this coming Tuesday. Last Thursday we had the service of the late Miles Hursthouse.
Dr. Miles was a well-known entity in Nelson, a much loved doctor. He was in his
hundredth year. It was nice that Charles Tyrrell was able to lead the service.
This next weekend is the installation of Peter Carroll as Bishop of Christchurch. He is well-known in the Nelson Diocese as he was once Priest Assistant of Stoke from 1993 to 1995, Vicar of Blenheim South from 1995 to 2000 and ministry educator from 2001 to 2010. He was a Canon of this Cathedral from 2002 to 2010. He left for the Christchurch diocese in 2010.
CHRIST CHURCH CATHEDRAL NELSON SUNDAY BULLETIN
3rd February 2019 – The 4th Sunday after the Epiphany
SERVICE INFORMATION: Those receiving Holy Communion are invited to do so EITHER by
intinction, i.e. retaining the wafer when it is given to you and then dipping it in the cup of wine before consuming it OR by consuming the wafer when it is given to you and then drinking from the common cup.
• Grape juice is available at communion.
• Gluten free wafers are available.
• Hearing Aid Loop available - please turn to the T position on your hearing aid ALSO
• Ramp for access to the Sanctuary (on the right side)
• Special chairs are available from the Pulpit side for those with disabilities or back problems. Note that the leg height can be adjusted to suit.
HEALTH ADVISORY NOTICE: Worshippers experiencing Cold or Influenza-like illnesses or associated symptoms are advised to refrain from partaking of the practice of “Intinction” with the wafer or using the “Common Cup” during the communion ceremony. Clearly labelled wine and fruit juice alternatives are provided utilising the small thimble glasses. This recommendation is an important personal and public health issue which conforms with the Cathedral’s Health & Safety requirements.
Christchurch diocese is in a bit of an upheaval following the resignation of a number
of Anglican priests who have set up their own alternative churches. While there, I
will be going back to our childhood Church of St. John’s Woolston where we were
married, and our parents were buried and where Patsy’s dad Malcolm used to play
the organ. So, I’ll be preaching, and Patsy will be playing the local St. John’s organ
which hasn’t been played ever since she left to come up here. Reverend Robert and
Anne Burgess and the Reverends Tony and Helen Andrews also have got links to
Woolston parish which also has been decimated by the resignation of their Vicar and
the establishment of another Church.
Men’s breakfast is on Saturday the 16th February from 8 to 9.30 am. Hopefully we
will have an overseas speaker. The following day on Sunday 17th at lunchtime we
will be having our Cathedral barbeque at the Deanery. It should be an exciting
weekend.
RECYCLE YOUR
CHRISTMAS CARDS
The messages and prayers left by visitors
from all over the world are from the heart and
poignant. To help us reduce the costs of the
2,000 handmade stars, we can reuse your
Christmas cards (with clear areas on the
reverse of the designs). Please remove all
personal messages and leave for Judith
(ASAP) in a box on the front trolley in the
Cathedral welcome area.
Many thanks.
The Christmas Tree Festival
is now planning for 2019.
The Memory Trees are a
beautiful part of the Festival.
Have a great week. In His service, Mike
Please pray for
Rev Steve Jordan
who is struggling
with leg ulcers.

The Sentence and Collects for the day
Sentence “One thing I have asked of the Lord, which I long for, that I may
dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to gaze on
your beauty O Lord and to seek you in your temple.”
Psalm 27:4,5
Collect God, your loving purpose and mercy exceed all imagining:
removed from us any narrowness of mind or heart that limits
your grace; and strengthen our will to follow wherever you may
lead us; through Jesus Christ our Lord who lives and reigns
with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for
ever. Amen.

2 Kings 5:10-14
10 Elisha sent a messenger to him,
saying, ‘Go, wash in the Jordan seven
times, and your flesh shall be restored
and you shall be clean.’ 11 But
Naaman became angry and went
away, saying, ‘I thought that for me he
would surely come out, and stand and
call on the name of the LORD his God,
and would wave his hand over the
spot, and cure the leprosy! 12 Are not
Abana and Pharpar, the rivers of
Damascus, better than all the waters
of Israel? Could I not wash in them,
and be clean?’ He turned and went
away in a rage. 13 But his servants
approached and said to him, ‘Father,
if the prophet had commanded you to
do something difficult, would you not
have done it? How much more, when
all he said to you was, “Wash, and be
clean”?’ 14 So he went down and
immersed himself seven times in the
Jordan, according to the word of the
man of God; his flesh was restored
like the flesh of a young boy, and he
was clean.
Acts 16:25-34 25 About midnight Paul and Silas were
praying and singing hymns to God,
and the prisoners were listening to
them. 26 Suddenly there was an
earthquake, so violent that the
foundations of the prison were
shaken; and immediately all the doors
were opened and everyone’s chains
were unfastened. 27 When the jailer
woke up and saw the prison doors
wide open, he drew his sword and was
about to kill himself, since he
supposed that the prisoners had
escaped. 28 But Paul shouted in a loud
voice, ‘Do not harm yourself, for we
are all here.’ 29 The jailer called for
lights, and rushing in, he fell
down trembling before Paul and
Silas. 30 Then he brought them outside
and said, ‘Sirs, what must I do to be
saved?’ 31 They answered, ‘Believe on
the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved,
you and your household.’ 32 They
spoke the word of the Lord to him and
to all who were in his house. 33 At the
same hour of the night he took them
and washed their wounds; then he
and his entire family were baptized
without delay. 34 He brought them up
into the house and set food before
them; and he and his entire household
rejoiced that he had become a
believer in God.
4
Luke 4:22-30 22 All spoke well of him and were
amazed at the gracious words that
came from his mouth. They said, ‘Is
not this Joseph’s son?’ 23 He said to
them, ‘Doubtless you will quote to me
this proverb, “Doctor, cure yourself!”
And you will say, “Do here also in
your home town the things that
we have heard you did at
Capernaum.”’ 24 And he said, ‘Truly I
tell you, no prophet is accepted in the
prophet’s home town. 25 But the truth
is, there were many widows in Israel
in the time of Elijah, when the heaven
was shut up for three years and six
months, and there was a severe
famine over all the land; 26 yet Elijah
was sent to none of them except to a
widow at Zarephath in Sidon. 27 There
were also many lepers in Israel in the
time of the prophet Elisha, and none
of them was cleansed except Naaman
the Syrian.’ 28 When they heard this,
all in the synagogue were filled with
rage. 29 They got up, drove him out of
the town, and led him to the brow of
the hill on which their town was built,
so that they might hurl him off the
cliff. 30 But he passed through the
midst of them and went on his way.
Haggai 2:1-9
In the second year of King Darius, 1 in
the seventh month, on the twenty-first
day of the month, the word of
the LORD came by the prophet
Haggai, saying: 2 Speak now to
Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, governor
of Judah, and to Joshua son of
Jehozadak, the high priest, and to the
remnant of the people, and say, 3 Who
is left among you that saw this house
in its former glory? How does it look to
you now? Is it not in your sight as
nothing? 4 Yet now take courage,
O Zerubbabel, says the LORD;
take courage, O Joshua, son of
Jehozadak, the high priest; take
courage, all you people of the land,
says the LORD; work, for I am with you,
says the LORD of hosts, 5 according to
the promise that I made you when you
came out of Egypt. My spirit abides
among you; do not fear. 6 For thus
says the LORD of hosts: Once again,
in a little while, I will shake the
heavens and the earth and the sea
and the dry land; 7 and I will shake all
the nations, so that the treasure of all
nations shall come, and I will fill this
house with splendour, says
the LORD of hosts. 8 The silver is mine,
and the gold is mine, says the LORD of
hosts. 9 The latter splendour of this
house shall be greater than the
former, says the LORD of hosts; and in
this place I will give prosperity, says
the LORD of hosts.

John 2:18-22 18 The Jews then said to him, ‘What sign can you show us for doing this?’ 19 Jesus answered them, ‘Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.’ 20 The Jews then said, ‘This temple has been under construction for forty-six years, and will you raise it up in three
days?’ 21 But he was speaking of the temple of his body. 22 After he was raised from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this; and they believed the scripture and the word that Jesus had spoken.

POT LUCK TEA
It's not Lent yet, but we have the opportunity to meet with two mission partners Arthur and Julia. They work in the Middle East. The meeting will be a pot luck tea, at our place, 34 Stafford Ave, Annesbrook on Tuesday 12 Feb at 6.00pm.
Arthur and Julia are working in the community. Theirs is an extremely interesting story. Both are linguists and highly talented. I first met Arthur, (who was dressed in his national north Indian dress) one Christmas time in a central church in Wellington. They are supported by the Church Missionary Society. This will be a good lead into the Lenten studies.

THE HOLY DUSTERS
The Cathedral desperately needs volunteers to give a couple of hours a month to assist in cleaning the Cathedral in pristine condition. Our part time cleaner does an excellent job but is only able to do so much in the time allowed.
We are looking for several groups of two people to maintain an allocated area on one morning per month. This would make an enormous contribution to the wellbeing and appearance of Nelson’s greatest asset.
Helen MacKenzie and Angela Shaw have been contributing their time for the last year and would much appreciate some more help as the Cathedral is a big place with a large amount to detail to dust and polish. PLEASE HELP.
Anyone interested

ST BARNABAS PRAYER
O Lord Jesus, who said “I will build my Church and the gates of hell will not prevail against it,” we praise You for the Church in China, which has survived persecution by Buddhists, Taoists, Muslims, Confucianists, Communists and more, over many Pastor Tajdeen Yousif Jan/Feb 2019 10 centuries. We rejoice in the wonderful growth in numbers of Christians in our time, perhaps as many as 200 million, but only You know. We pray that You will sustain and encourage each one, especially as pressure on them grows under the government of President Xi. May they know Your presence, Your peace and Your power every day. (Matthew 16:18) Amen
PRAISE REPORT: Tim Hurd & Jenny Dickie are both doing much better. Thank you for
all he prayers - praise the Lord!! 😊
