Dear Cathedralites I pay tribute to two remarkable women The first is Anne Sparrow. I was asked to speak at her 90th birthday in Christ-church yesterday. Anne and her husband Gordon headed up Child Evangelism Fellowship for many years. Now both aged 90 they have only recently given up teaching the bible in schools in Christchurch. They are remarkable. The second is Anne Newton who once belonged to this Cathedral. Her funeral service was held here on Friday. Anne and her husband ran a Christian community for many years along the Motueka River. Anne joined me on a pilgrimage to the Holy Land a few years ago. She was usually last on the bus, not because of her age, but because of her fantastic interest in everything. She was an inspiring pilgrim. Today we come to the end of our four week “Growing our Cathedral” series. Today I invite us all to stay, pray and pay. It is exciting to witness an increas-ing number of people joining in on this threefold call. Please let Raewyn at the office know about significant birthdays as is
Rosemary’s 80th, along with such as Pearl’s 96th birthday, and Mary Hargreaves 80th last week. Helen, Angela and team are continuing to develop a Cathedral directory which will make life a bit easier for all of us when we try to find phone numbers and emails of folk within the Cathedral. Today I invite you to sign a letter that I have written expressing dismay at the premature way in which, I believe, the Speaker of the House has made changes to the Parliamentary prayer. It is not a letter of protest so much as a letter of lament. Next Sunday we celebrate our Cathedral bells. Helen MacKenzie has developed a wonderful, reliable team of bellringers. If you want to know more and be part of this amazing ministry then contact Helen at 544 5613 or email [email protected] . We will also have a “stir up” Christmas cake mix. Next week we also celebrate Denis Mellsop’s 56th anniversary of his Ordination along with the past Bishop of Waiapu, the Right Reverend Murray Mills, who will be our preacher at the 10am service. In the evening we are
Welcome to Christ Church Cathedral. Children are welcome to our services.
There is a playpen for younger children and there are toys in the quiet room which is the room
at the front of the Cathedral on the left hand side. PLEASE FEEL FREE TO TAKE THIS PUBLICATION AWAY WITH YOU.

Second Sunday before Advent
having Missionaries from the Middle East to preach. They are involved in some amazing work. Because they are in a sensitive area they cannot say too much in public so I invite you all to the Deanery at the following Wednesday the 29th to listen to them at first hand in much more detail. All of this is a great reminder that we called to be a Cathedral that is lively, functional and God-honouring.
I am thrilled to announce our new Administrator. Theresa Coombes has vast experience in working alongside the public. She is also great on the computer. Theresa and family attend Victory Anglican Church. Have a great week. In his service. Mike
Sentence: What does the Lord who has showed you what is good require of
you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God. Micah 6:8
Collect: Almighty God, you alone can bring order to our unruly wills and
affections; give us grace to love what you command and desire what you promise, that in all the changes and chances of this uncertain world, our hearts may surely there be fixed where true joys are to be found; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Lord I lift Your name on high Lord I love to sing Your praises I'm so glad You're in my life I'm so glad You came to save us [Chorus:] You came from heaven to earth To show the way From the earth to the cross My debt to pay From the cross to the grave From the grave to the sky Lord I lift Your name on high
V1. Lift up your heads, O ye gates, Swing wide your everlasting doors (x2) Chorus: That the King of glory may come in . V2. Up from the dead He ascends, Through every rank of heavenly power. Let heaven prepare the highest place, Throw wide the everlasting doors. V3. With trumpet blast and shouts of joy, All heaven greets the risen King. With angel choirs come line the way, Throw wide the gates and welcome Him.

How great is our God
The splendor of a King, clothed in majesty Let all the earth rejoice All the earth rejoice He wraps himself in Light, and darkness tries to hide And trembles at His voice Trembles at His voice [Chorus] How great is our God, sing with me How great is our God, and all will see How great, how great is our God V2 Age to age He stands And time is in His hands Beginning and the end Beginning and the end The Godhead Three in One Father Spirit Son The Lion and the Lamb The Lion and the Lamb [Chorus] How great is our God [Bridge] Name above all names Worthy of our praise My heart will sing How great is our God
[Chorus] How great is our God
Stand up, stand up for Jesus, ye soldiers of the cross! Lift high his royal banner, it must not suffer loss. From victory unto victory his army he shall lead, till every foe is vanquished, and Christ is Lord indeed. Stand up, stand up for Jesus, the solemn watchword hear; if while ye sleep he suffers, away with shame and fear. Where’er ye meet with evil, within you or without, charge for the God of battles, and put the foe to rout. Stand up, stand up for Jesus, stand in his strength alone; the arm of flesh will fail you, ye dare not trust your own. Put on the gospel armour, each piece put on with prayer; when duty calls or danger be never wanting there. Stand up, stand up for Jesus, the strife will not be long; this day the noise of battle, the next the victor’s song. To him that overcometh a crown of life shall be; he with the King of glory shall reign eternally.

Pray for music and musicians Eternal Lord God, source of all beauty and harmony, we praise you for the gift of music: for the inspiration given to those who compose it, for the skill and devotion of those who perform it, for the faculties and powers which enable us to enjoy it; and we pray that as by this gift our lives are enriched and renewed, so we may glorify you in a fuller dedication of ourselves. Guide the team charged to lead the music in our Cathedral giving thanks for all things in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.

St. Barnabas Prayer Lord Jesus, who walked on water and commanded the winds and waves, we lift to you the countless thousands who have suffered through flooding in South Asia and West Africa and hurricanes in the Caribbean. Have mercy on them and provide for them. We ask also for East Africa and southern Africa that You will send rains at this sea-son in the right places and the right amounts, that crops will grow and flourish and the years of hunger come to an end. May Your children affected by these disasters be sources of hope, peace and comfort to all around who do not yet know You for themselves.

Announcement The Dean and Wardens are pleased to announce that Teresa Coombes
has been appointed as office administrator for the Cathedral. She is
replacing Raewyn who has valiantly held the position for at least 27 years
and who is retiring.
Theresa is originally from South Africa, and is a bubbly vibrant person who
will do a great job. Her hours have yet to be set in concrete, but will proba-
bly be 9.30am to 1.30pm Monday to Friday.
She is going to start at the beginning of December and she and Raewyn
will be mostly there together as Christmas is our busy time. Raewyn’s last
day is the end of December.
Garage sale
A garage sale was held October 7th to raise funds for the Cathedral. This was a wet day and not many came to the 2A Grove Street sale.
The remaining stock was stored and then taken to the market last week-end. The total raised at the two sales was $ $622.
Remaining items were taken to the Salvation Army and Founders Park. A Big Thank you to all who donated items and helped with these sales.
Next Sunday at 10am there will be a
group of hand bellringers performing at
the service to celebrate Bell Sunday. We
will also have our Cathedral bells ringing.
It is many years since hand bells have
been heard in the Cathedral.
Readings Proverbs 3: 1-12
My child, do not forget my teach-ing, but let your heart keep my commandments; 2 for length of days and years of life and abun-dant welfare they will give you. 3 Do not let loyalty and faithful-ness forsake you; bind them round your neck, write them on the tablet of your heart. 4 So you will find favour and good repute in the sight of God and of people. 5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not rely on your own insight. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will
make straight your paths. 7 Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the LORD, and turn away from evil. 8 It will be a healing for your flesh and a refreshment for your body. 9 Honour the LORD with your sub-stance and with the first fruits of all your produce; 10 then your barns will be filled with plenty, and your vats will be bursting with wine. 11 My child, do not despise the LORD’s discipline or be weary of his reproof, 12 for the LORD re-proves the one he loves, as a fa-ther the son in whom he delights.
1 Thessalonians 5: 1-11 Now concerning the times and the
seasons, brothers and sisters,[a] you do not need to have anything written to you. 2 For you your-selves know very well that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night. 3 When they say, ‘There is peace and security’, then sudden destruction will come upon them, as labour pains come upon a pregnant woman, and there will be no escape! 4 But you, beloved,[b] are not in dark-ness, for that day to surprise you like a thief; 5 for you are all chil-dren of light and children of the day; we are not of the night or of darkness. 6 So then, let us not fall asleep as others do, but let us keep awake and be sober; 7 for
those who sleep sleep at night, and those who are drunk get drunk at night. 8 But since we be-long to the day, let us be sober, and put on the breastplate of faith and love, and for a helmet the hope of salvation. 9 For God has destined us not for wrath but for obtaining salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, 10 who died for us, so that whether we are awake or asleep we may live with him. 11 Therefore encourage one an-other and build up each other, as indeed you are doing.

St. Matthew 23: 23-27
23 ‘Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you tithe mint, dill, and cummin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the law: justice and mercy and faith. It is these you ought to have practised without ne-glecting the others. 24 You blind guides! You strain out a gnat but swal-low a camel 25 ‘Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you clean the outside of the cup and of the plate, but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence. 26 You blind Phar-isee! First clean the inside of the cup,[a] so that the outside also may become clean. 27 ‘Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs, which on the out-side look beautiful, but inside they are full of the bones of the dead and of all kinds of filth.
Psalm 89 (an alternative translation)
20 Thou spakest sometime in vi-
sions unto thy saints, and saidst :
I have laid help upon one that is
mighty; I have exalted one cho-
sen out of the people.
21 I have found David my serv-
ant : with my holy oil have I
anointed him.
22 My hand shall hold him fast :
and my arm shall strengthen him.
23 The enemy shall not be able
to do him violence: the son of
wickedness shall not hurt him.
24 I will smite down his foes be-
fore his face : and plague them
that hate him.
25 My truth also and my mercy
shall be with him: and in my
Name shall his horn be exalted.
26 I will set his dominion also in the sea : and his right hand in the floods. 27 He shall call me, Thou art my Father : my God, and my strong salvation. 28 And I will make him my first-born : higher than the kings of the earth. 29 My mercy will I keep for him for evermore : and my covenant shall stand fast with him. 30 His seed also will I make to endure for ever : and his throne as the days of heaven. 31 But if his children forsake my law : and walk not in my judge-ments; 32 If they break my statutes, and keep not my commandments : I will visit their offences with the rod, and their sin with scourges. 33 Nevertheless, my loving-kind-ness will I not utterly take from him : nor suffer my truth to fail. 34 My covenant will I not break, nor alter the thing that is gone out of my lips : I have sworn once by my holiness, that I will not fail David. 35 His seed shall endure for ever : and his seat is like as the sun before me. 36 He shall stand fast for ever-more as the moon : and as the faithful witness in heaven. 37 But thou hast abhorred and forsaken thine Anointed : and art displeased at him
