CHRIST CHURCH CATHEDRAL, NELSON Sunday Bulletin –14 th June 2020 2 nd Sunday after Pentecost Welcome to Christ Church Cathedral, Nelson. Children are welcome at our services. Dear Cathedralites, Today we begin a brand new teaching series entitled ‘Not the BBC but the IBC’ (Inspirational Bible Characters). We start with Abraham and the particular unique feature I want to feature was his pioneering daring. Pioneering daring means leaving a place of comfort to go to the unknown and resource and benefit others. Abraham certainly did that and is an inspiration to us all. So, today we pray for all of us to have a bit more of pioneering daring. Incidentally it all began for him in his mid 70’s! That must give us all some food for thought. Isn’t it wonderful to be back to some sort of normality of life? I have thoroughly enjoyed meeting up with people face to face, to be able to give a hug or shake hands. On Wednesday we had our first face to face staff meeting with Canon Jocelyn Smith, presently making her the most recent addition to our staff team. She brings her experience in teaching, business, and in her own personal Christian journey. Besides that, Jocelyn is a Canon in the cathedral and the Keeper of the Fabric and so is a wonderful liaison within the cathedral. It is a pleasure to have Canon Jocelyn in our staff team in this generous volunteer capacity. Patsy and I had a wonderful lunch with John and Becky Stewart last week. Becky, who is Chinese, was telling us about the horrendous experience that Christians are having in mainland China. It’s a pity that world news media choose to not dwell on this. Christians face severe persecution in many parts of China. I had a Zoom meeting with all the Deans this week. Our conversations were very revealing. Two of the cathedrals and their dioceses have outlawed intinction on the basis that they risk infection much more th an the common cup. To that end they offer bread and the common cup only. However, their wine is 18% alcohol which acts as a sort of antiseptic. The other cathedrals are also going in that direction. I will leave it up to the powers that be in this cathedral, but I have always been interested that this diocese is alone in its insistence on intinction. It is not a big issue for me, so rest assured I won’t be making any definitive decision on my own. I have always preferred bread as opposed to wafers and a common cup with high quality and high percentage wine. Many of the cathedrals have suffered a major financial hit but are coping admirably. I look forward to our annual Dean’s con- ference meeting face to face next month in Auckland.

CHRIST CHURCH CATHEDRAL, NELSON Sunday Bulletin –14th June 2020

2nd Sunday after Pentecost

Welcome to Christ Church Cathedral, Nelson. Children are welcome at our services. There are toys in the Quiet Room.

Please feel free to take this publication away with you.

Our Choral Evensong will recommence on Sunday 28th June at 5.30 pm. Our midweek service will restart on the week of June 29th. It was lovely to have a super afternoon tea with Ruth Hodge this week. She is an amazing and inspirational woman and a joy to be around. It was lovely to be back at The Wood taking services last Friday. There are quite a number of cathedralites residing there. Its always nice to be accompanied by our Parish Nurse, Judith Fitchett. Well done Revd. Fred Greig on your 86th birthday last Sunday. What an incredible and modest man Fred is! When we talk of daring pioneering the Rev. Fred and Bev Greig were there boots and all in their pioneering. Ask them to tell stories about what it was like to be Vicar in the far reaches of Havelock in the 1960’s, travelling not by car so much, but by boat. Ask them about their missionary work in Kenya in the 70’s, followed by pioneering work in Awatere and Picton. Inspiration with pioneering daring! Have a good week. In His service, Mike REMINDER:

have sinned through our own deliberate fault.

The Proclamation of the Word The Old Testament Lesson

Genesis 12:1-10 read by Graham Allan

1 Now the LORD said to Abram, ‘Go from your country and your kindred and your father’s house to the land that I will show you. 2 I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you, and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing. 3 I will bless those who bless you, and the one who curses you I will curse; and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.’4 So Abram went, as the LORD had told him; and Lot

went with him. Abram was seventy-five years old when he departed from Haran. 5 Abram took his wife Sarai and his brother’s son Lot, and all the possessions that they had gathered, and the persons whom they had acquired in Haran; and they set forth to go to the land of Canaan. When they had come to the land of Canaan, 6 Abram passed through the land to the place at Shechem,

to the oak of Moreh. At that time the Canaanites were in the land. 7 Then the LORD appeared to Abram, and said, ‘To your offspring I will give this land.’ So he built there an altar to the LORD, who had appeared to him. 8 From there he moved on to the hill country on the east of Bethel, and pitched his tent, with Bethel on the west and Ai on the east;

and there he built an altar to the LORD and invoked the name of the LORD. 9 And Abram journeyed on by stages towards the Negeb. 10 Now there was a famine in the land. So, Abram went down to Egypt to reside there as an alien, for the famine was severe in the land.

Psalm 116:10-18 10. I believed that I would perish, I was brought very low:

I said in my haste ‘All men are liars.” 11. How shall I repay the Lord: for all his benefits to me? 12. I will take up the cup of salvation: and call up on the name of the Lord. 13. I will pay my vows to the Lord: in the presence of all His people. 14. Grievous in the sight of the Lord: is the death of his faithful ones. 15. O Lord I am your servant your servant and the son of your handmaid:

you have unloosened my bonds. 16. I will offer you a sacrifice of thanksgiving: and call upon the name of the Lord. 17. I will pay my vows to the Lord: in the presence of all His people. 18. In the courts of the house of the Lord: even in your midst O Jerusalem.

Praise the Lord.

This is followed by The Epistle Hebrews 11:8-12

read by Judith Fitchett

8 By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to set out for a place that he was to receive as an inheritance; and he set out, not knowing where he was going. 9 By faith he stayed for a time in the land he had been promised, as in a foreign land, living in tents, as did Isaac and Jacob, who were heirs with him of the same promise. 10 For he looked forward to the city that has foundations, whose architect and builder is

God. 11 By faith he received power of procreation, even though he was too old—and Sarah herself was barren—because he considered him faithful who had promised. 12 Therefore from one person, and this one as good as dead, descendants were born, ‘as many as the stars of heaven and as the innumerable grains of sand by the seashore.’

We stand to sing the Gradual Hymn 517

1 Loving Shepherd of thy sheep, keep Thy lamb, in safety keep; nothing can Thy power withstand, none can pluck me from Thy hand.

2 Loving Saviour, Thou didst give Thine own life that we might live, and the hands outstretched to bless bear the cruel nails’ impress.

3 Loving Shepherd, ever near,

teach thy lamb Thy voice to hear; suffer not my steps to stray from the straight and narrow way.

4 Where Thou leadest I would go,

walking in Thy steps below, till before my Father’s throne I shall know as I am known.

The Holy Gospel Matthew 8:5-13

read by Reverend Nigel Whinney

After the announcement All sing Praise and glory to God

5 When Jesus entered Capernaum, a centurion came to him, appealing to him 6 and saying, ‘Lord, my servant is lying at home paralysed, in terrible distress.’ 7 And he said to him, ‘I will come and cure him.’ 8 The centurion answered, ‘Lord, I am not worthy to have you come under my roof; but only speak the word, and my servant will be healed. 9 For I also am a man under authority, with soldiers under me; and I say to one, “Go”, and he goes, and to another, “Come”, and he comes, and to my slave, “Do this”, and the slave does

it.’ 10 When Jesus heard him, he was amazed and said to those who followed him, ‘Truly I tell you, in no one in Israel have I found such faith. 11 I tell you, many will come from east and west and will eat with Abraham and Isaac and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven, 12 while the heirs of the kingdom will be thrown into the outer darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’ 13 And to the centurion Jesus said, ‘Go; let it be done for you according to your faith.’ And the servant was healed in that hour.

The Sermon Dean Mike Hawke Intercessions

Canon Jocelyn Smith

Lord, in Your mercy Hear our prayer

We conclude our prayers by singing the Lord’s Prayer Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial, and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever. Amen We stand to affirm our faith in the words of the Nicene Creed

All We believe in one God, the Father the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father; through Him all things were made. For us and for our salvation, He came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary, and became fully human. For our sake He was crucified under Pontius Pilate; He suffered death and was buried. On the third day He rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; He ascended into Heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and His kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who in unity with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, and has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church. We acknowledge one bap-tism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Celebrant The peace of Christ be always with you. All And also with you.

Minister of Liturgy We worship God with our tithes and offerings as we sing CP 390

1 Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine: O what a foretaste of glory divine! Heir of salvation, purchase of God; born of his Spirit, washed in his blood: This is my story, this is my song,

praising my Saviour all the day long.

2 Perfect submission, perfect delight, visions of rapture burst on my sight; angels descending bring from above echoes of mercy, whispers of love:

This is my story....

3 Perfect submission, all is at rest, I in my Saviour am happy and blest watching and waiting, looking above, filled with his goodness, lost in his love:

This is my story, this is my song, praising my Saviour all the day long.

11

You are the source of all life and goodness; through your eternal Word you have created all things from the beginning and formed us in your own image; male and female you created us.

When we sinned and turned away you called us back to yourself and gave your Son to share our human nature. By his death on the cross, He made the one perfect sacrifice for the sin of the world and freed us from the bondage of sin. You raised him to life triumphant over death: you exalted him in glory. In him you have made us a holy people by sending upon us your holy and lifegiving Spirit. Therefore, with the faithful who rest in him, with angels and archangels and all the company of heaven, we proclaim your great and glorious name, for ever praising you and singing:

Choir Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of hosts

Heav’n and earth are full of Thy glory Glory be to Thee O Lord Most High Blessed is He that cometh in the name of the Lord Hosanna, Hosanna in the highest.

Please kneel or be seated

Celebrant All glory and thanksgiving to you, Holy Father, on the night before he

died your Son, Jesus Christ, took bread; when He had given you thanks, He broke it, gave it to His disciples, and said: Take, eat, this is my body which is given for you; do this to remember me.

After supper He took the cup; when He had given you thanks, He gave it to them and said: Drink this, all of you, for this is my blood of the new covenant which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins; do this as often as you drink it, to remember me.

All sing Glory to you Lord Christ, your death we show forth, your resurrection we proclaim, your coming we await. Amen. Come Lord Jesus.

The Celebrant continues

Therefore, loving God, recalling your great goodness to us in Christ, his suffering and death, his resurrection and ascension, and looking for his coming in glory, we celebrate our redemption with this bread of life and this cup of salvation. Accept our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving which we offer through Christ our great high priest. Send your Holy Spirit that these gifts of bread and wine which we re-ceive may be to us the body and blood of Christ, and that we, filled with the Spirit’s grace and power may be renewed for the service of your kingdom. United in Christ with all who stand before you in earth and heaven, we worship you, O God, in songs of everlasting praise.

All sing Blessing honour and glory be yours, here and everywhere. Now and forever. Amen.

The Communion

Celebrant We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. All We who are many are one body, for we all share the one bread. We do not presume to come to your holy table, merciful Lord, trusting in our own righteousness, but in your great mercy. We are not worthy even to gather the crumbs from under your table. But you are the same Lord whose nature is always to have mercy. Grant us, therefore, gracious Lord, so to eat the body of your dear Son, Jesus Christ, and to drink his blood, that we may evermore dwell in him and he in us. Amen. The Choir sings the Angus Dei as those in the sanctuary receive communion.

The Invitation

The Celebrant invites the people saying Draw near and receive the body and blood of our Saviour Jesus Christ in remembrance that he died for us. Let us feed on him in our hearts by faith with thanksgiving. The congregation is invited to receive communion at the High Altar. Please come up the centre aisle and return by the side aisles. Those receiving Holy Communion are invited to do so by consuming the wafer when it is given to you. Gluten free wafers are available to those who need them. There will be no wine or grape juice available until further notice.

Prayer after Communion

Celebrant Almighty God, giver of all good things, we thank you for feeding us with the spiritual food of the precious body and blood of our Saviour, Jesus Christ. We thank you for your love and care in assuring us of your gift of eternal life and uniting us with the blessed company of all faithful people.

All Therefore, everliving God, keep us steadfast in your holy

fellowship. And now we offer ourselves, all that we have and are, to serve you faithfully in the world, through Jesus Christ our Redeemer, to whom with you and the Holy Spirit be all honour and glory, now and for ever. Amen.

Nelson Cathedral CHRISTIAN MEDITATION Meditation is not something new.

Rather it is central to the Christian experience and deeply rooted in Christian tradition.

Meditation, also known as contemplative prayer, is the prayer of silence and listening.

This is the aim given by the Psalmist “Be still and know that I am God.”

All are welcome to join us for this ecumenical prayer- a time of silence, stillness and

reflection. Come and join our small, friendly community of Christian meditators.

It is suitable for everyone, and easy to learn.

Every Tuesday evening from 4.30 – 5.30 pm

The From Us with Aroha appeal has launched in Nelson, raising funds to send two concert organists on a contactless tour to aged care facilities next month.

This is an amazing community project that I know all of you will see the benefit in! This brings my passion for Audio and Music together in a way I feel thrilled to be able to do. I'm putting everything i can into this, and i really need some help to get it the last bit of the way.

If you're able to assist with letting people know about this project, that would be fantastic! We had a news article on One News, and they forgot to mention we were fundraising. We are almost at the halfway point, and over the weekend, we have received offers for 2 different trucks in the north island, as well as we have now completed our South Island Truck. Kemp English will start his north island leg of the tour on the 5th of June (+/- a day) so we are hoping to be funded by then. Our Group 'From Us With Aroha Incorporated' is now a registered charity, so we welcome any donations that may be available. a receipt for Tax purposes can be provided which is fantastic! Please see the links below for current articles in the media:

UPCOMING EVENTS

Reflection

This time of ‘Lockdown’ or ‘slowdown’ has allowed me to survey my life in general— to spend time assessing where I’m at, what to do, where I’m going. What have been my pitfalls, my ambitions, my successes and achievements as I think back now, at this older stage of my living. How am I fitting into today’s world and ways when I compare past times with the present? It has been, and still is, an area of soul-searching. There have been driftings away from thoughts of God and where I am with him. Periods of acknowledgement have been erratic. I have used this time for deeper reflection. For remembrances of family and peo-ple and my relationships with them all, and ‘how’, ‘where’ we all fit into this existence in harmony. It comes down to where we come from. We know that we come from God and that he is our Creator Being. We are drawn to him often unknowingly but with the realisation that how-ever we perceive him there is this Presence, this Invisible, who touches us in many ways, places, instances and situations. There is peace, security, hope and ever-surrounding comfort and love. I feel no longer so alone, but embraced in this inclusion of the ‘Whole’. I am where I belong and can be thankful to feel and acknowledge the ‘Eternal’, ‘I am’ ‘Presence’ and praise and honour Him. Colleen Kirby

PRAYER Almighty God, our Father in heaven.

Thank you for all your loving care and great generosity. We ask for your help for people troubled by Coronavirus.

Comfort the bereaved. Health those who are ill. Help those who care for the sick. Guide those seeking a remedy. Give wisdom to our leaders. In our own need we also remember the millions in the world suffering from other causes – starvation – disease – war and strife. Bring all needy people to know your love

and to turn to you. May we remember that your love for us is greater than the sky is above the earth.

We pray in the name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Saviour. Amen.
