The Port Angeles Association of Realtors® (P.A.A.R.) comprises Realtors, Real Estate

Brokerage offi ces, and companies that work directly with real estate transactions. The non-Realtor companies are called “Affi liates.” Collectively, we work together to make your real estate transaction as seam-less as possible.

As an organization we do more that just help people buy and sell properties. We also have a great concern about making Port Angeles the best town it can be to live, work and play. Several times a year we do community service projects, we give out scholarships, we fundraise for charities and social help agencies.

We also host “What My Home Means to Me,” perhaps the most fun event of all, where 3rd graders give us their thoughts on what “home” is. We hope you enjoy the artwork, the thoughts and feelings of these children. It has been our pleasure to bring this event to the community and we look forward to doing so for many years to come.

“Children are the living messages we send to a time we will not see.”

When Neil Portman wrote those words in 1982 the world was a

vastly different place, but the senti-ment is as accurate today as it was then. Children may be only about 30% percent of our population, but they are 100% of our future.

Whether you look at government, fi -nance, entertainment, sports or art you will see names like those shown in box at right on this page, and others you’ll know. . . and they are all alumni of the Boys & Girls Clubs of America. They are the messages that their parents and elders sent on to us.

The Boys & Girls Club is a nation-ally chartered organization that pro-vides our local children a safe place to learn, play and grow. It is collectively the largest development-centered af-terschool program in the United States. Many children have parents who are both working and trying to do their best, but that leaves the children alone and unsupervised after school.

Our current Boys & Girls Club facility was built in 1949 and is at its physical capacity. There are plans for a new building and improved facilities to be done within the next few years. However, the need for volunteers and community partnerships is now. The Port Angeles Association of Realtors is proud to be working alongside this fi ne organization dedicated to building our children into the fi nest adults they can be.

The new Club building is hoped to be done by the summer of 2018 but the club is anticipating 1500 members and

an average attendance of 300 children before then. Their motto is “Great Futures Start Here.” They need great volunteers to start now.

Call the Boys & Girls Club at 417-2831 and fi nd out what you can do. There are many ways you can help and you’d be surprised what a small act can accomplish when you are helping a child.

You may not know of him, but in the Civil War era the wife of a slave owner went against local custom and taught a young slave boy the alpha-bet and to read. Her act of kindness helped shape his life and our country. He went on to be a famed author and orator, a government offi cial and a civil rights activist. His name was Frederick Douglass. As he advised, “It is easier to build strong children than it is to repair broken men.”

Please join with your local Realtors and neighbors and send the message that we also cared about our children and our society’s future.
