The end of the year is fast approaching, and there continue to be exciting and different learning opportunities on and off

site for your children. We have been grateful to all of the parents and extended whanau who have supported and assist-

ed with all of these events so far this year. We would truly be unable to offer these to your children without your sup-

port…Tino pai!

New Classroom Block

The site office has arrived in readiness for the new classroom block and initial disconnections will begin next week in

preparation for the demolition of the Boiler and P.E. shed. The construction site will be fully screened and there will be

regular Health and Safety Checks to ensure compliance. Access to the construction site will be via the gates beside the

hall, so please do not park in front of them at any time. Our building company, Construct Ltd. will be instructing the

delivery of goods and their subbies to access our site outside of our peak traffic time. If any safety issues emerge, we

will work with our Project Manager and Construct to reach an amicable outcome.

Carpark

Thanks so much for your patience. Our Trustee, Mr Marcus Graham is working hard to communicate with all parties to

try and get this finalised ready for the start of 2021. Just a reminder when dropping off your child in the morning to

move along to the end of the barriers and the 2.50p.m. pick is only for Kowhai Hub students and their siblings. All other

students will not be released until 3p.m.

Staff have found intercom requests for children to come to the car park to be too disruptive. If you arrive prior to the end

of school at 3p.m. please wait in between the cones until your child joins the group behind the barriers. Please park diag-

onally between the cones. Please communicate this process to all people who are collecting children from the car park.

TEACHER ONLY DAY: MONDAY NOVEMBER 30TH: Please note that the school will be closed for instruction on

the 30th November as we finalise and our analyse our students’ data to present to the BOT at the forthcoming December

hui on Wednesday 9 December. Teacher only days were awarded as part of the accord in the 2019 Teachers’ Collective

Agreement settlement.

Outstanding accounts

We currently have $10,181.74c outstanding of which $4,335.35 are donations. We acknowledge that it has been a

unique and different year for us all and would really appreciate your communication either by settling your accounts or

communicating with Mrs Cowan for an arrangement to be made. Remember that donations are tax deductible. Thank

ROTARY ESSAYS - THIRD instalment

It Happened During Lockdown! By Kate Davenport

All of a sudden lockdown happened. At lockdown I felt excited to be with my family be-

cause it was like one big surprise holiday, but not away from home. As well as being

excited, I was glad that I had lots of space around me. I felt happy and safe at home

too.

On the first day of lockdown Mum made a schedule for Jack and I to follow. It included

math, writing, reading and last but not least science. On the second day of lockdown

two books arrived in the mail, one for math and one for literacy. In the literacy book I

got nearly half way through. In the maths I got well past the middle. You can definitely

tell Maths is one of my favourite subjects.

A lot of people learnt new skills in lockdown like me. I got better at baking. Baking is

so fun because you try and try again until you get something really tasty. I learnt how

to make bread. The first loaf of bread I made was focaccia. The first time I made it I

put too much salt on it, it was very salty. The second bread I made was pita bread.

Pita bread is like a flat bread but it puffs up in the pan, it’s oily and so yummy, I love

it. I made ginger biscuits and anzac biscuits with my brother. We ate them fresh out of

the oven. They were the best biscuits I had ever tasted.

What's better than having fresh air in your face while biking? I don't, know? But in lock-down I loved to bike down the road, it was so fun to do in the afternoon. Me and my brother biked and my mum walked on the side of the road. There weren't many cars because most people were at home. It was good that there weren't many cars on the road because that means there's not much carbon dioxide in the air. My favourite bit about biking was there was more wildlife around, the birds were like music in my ears.

One of my highlights in lockdown was leading my last year's ag day lamb Cheeky.

We put a lead on her and we had some nuts. We put the nuts in front of them to

tempt them to come to you. She walked behind me while I led her around the pad-

dock. Once she ran away from me and I had to run after her.

The only person I had to play with in lockdown was my brother Jack. I played with

him and picked vegetables for dinner with him. He helped me bake as well, he’s the

best brother in the world.

In lockdown I made espresso coffee for my Mum and Dad. I delivered it to them while

they worked and I made them dinner, lunch and sometimes breakfast. What do you

call that? I call it a five star hotel.

Sometimes they got biscuits fresh out the oven while they worked.

Every night Me Dad and Jack went down to the stream to check the traps and to

muck about down by the stream. We came back to the house with wet gumboots,

socks, and sometimes wet clothes. What can be worse than that?

The highlights of lockdown were playing with my ag day lambs because they got

friendlier. As well as that, I loved going down to the stream with Dad to cheek the

traps. My overall highlight was baking bread by hand.

At the end of lockdown I felt sad to be going back to school because I was having

so much fun baking bread at home.

Friday 13th did not prove to be unlucky for our tamariki who attended the Lower Waipa Athletics Competition at Te Awamutu Stadium. Thirty-six of our top ath-letes, aged 8 to 13 competed against students from the other schools in our clus-ter. They acquitted themselves very well, attaining a total of 17 top three finishes. A huge thanks to all the parents who volunteered themselves and their vehicles as transport to the event and also helped Mr Spicer run the girls high jump. A spe-cial thanks to Mr Dave Smith for transporting and setting up/dismantling the high jump and marquee for us. We would not be able to participate in such events without your help.
