Mission always remains the first priority. However, there are several key differences that set businesses apart from

mission focused organizations.

Let’s compare some guidelines of a fictitious Fortune 500 Company with a mission focused nonprofit.

Customer Satisfaction Are your donors or supporters satisfied? The biggest mistake most nonprofits make is not understanding their donors. Building relationships, being good stewards for your resources, and so on. A strong donor relations strategy is truly important for continued growth.

Return on Investment Charitable causes have investments whether they know it or not. Investing in a fundraiser, a media campaign to promoting your mission, etc. Are you maximizing your ROI? The Lord calls us to be good stewards for what we are given. He rewards us when we put our talents to use! ROI is a key factor to realizing your mission’s true potential. The key question here is will your actions serve the mission and will their be a positive ROI (which can be measured in both dollars as well as service oriented accomplishments).

Reduce wasteful spending. If it doesn’t maximize ROI or build the brand, for profits don’t do it.

Charities can become absorbed by wasteful spending - again being a good steward is key. When you file your annual taxes you can take a look at what percentage of your budget is being spent on programing for your charitable purpose versus how much you spend on administration or fundraising. Some donors look at these ratios when determining where and how much to give.

Invest in quality for longevity You get what you pay for. Don’t compromise quality or jump over dimes for pennies. It’s an irony with the above rules however if you are investing in quality for the long-term you can more adequately protect and develop your mission.

Protect the brand, reputation, and integrity (from the outside and from within)

A charity’s brand is everything. It is a reputation. If a CEO of a major company lays off his employees - it wouldn’t look good for him to take a million dollar bonus. Likewise - when the executive director of a charity takes a major six figure salary - it might not go over well with your donors - unless you can justify the salary with massive financials gains for the cause.

Legal and Compliance Many charities gloss over important legal considerations such as charitable solicitation registrations, tax filings and even intellectual property filings. The red tap is time consuming but neglect or mistakes are can costly!
