Bigger,bolder,better!

What I’m interest in, though, isn’t the practicalities, it’s what the speakersand exhibitors will be talking about, demonstrating and hinting at. It’s clearthat OSS/BSS is in the midst of a resurgent wave of interest. Most of ushave seen the cycle before but it’s always exciting to report on an industryin rapid transformation.

The last three months have seen a wave of M&A activity as companies re-arrange their assets to meet the demands of CSPs more effectively. Giventhe investment challenges that CSPs face as they roll-out LTE and considerhow LTE-Advanced might be deployed, OSS/BSS as the enabler of newbusiness models and the creator of operational efficiencies is now moreimportant than ever.

Billions of Euros are at stake, wrong decisions will be costly so the platformthe Congress provides to learn from others will be even more importantthis year.

I’ll certainly be trying to avoid making the wrong decisions – like potatoomelette in a white roll for lunch – although I fear, even at the new venue,some things will remain the same.

Jens Amail is senior vice president andgeneral manager for Services Industries atSAP. Here, he tells VanillaPlus how he viewsthe M2M opportunity for CSPs. Theopportunities are massive, but to make themost of them, CSPs must think way beyondtheir telco roots and select the right partnersto bring compelling propositions to enterprisesand ultimately consumers

VanillaPlus: CSPs are all actively looking atthe M2M space as a market that they canhave a direct impact on. In your opinion,what are the key business drivers for M2Mand how should CSPs position themselves?

Jens Amail: We have seen a tremendousmobile handset growth over the years, and todaythere are as many mobile handsets out there asthere are people on earth, around seven billion.In addition to that we also have some two billionconnected M2M devices, sensors and machines.And looking ahead, we will see an exponentialgrowth in this area, dramatically expanding theaddressable market for CSPs. Now our cars,home appliances and consumer electronics willcome with connectivity built-in. We will seedevices connecting in a multitude of industriessuch as oil and gas, retail, energy, public sectorand banking – creating a hyper-connected world.

The first M2M business driver I see is makingexisting business processes more efficient. Takethe Hamburg Port Authority as an example.Europe’s second largest container port wanted tooptimise the flow of goods and traffic. With verylimited road and space capacity in and out of theport, they had to find creative ways to supportfurther growth. Deutsche Telekom partnered withSAP to enable Hamburg’s Smart Port Logisticsproject which outfitted trucks with tabletsconnected to a central system in order to keeptrack of available parking spaces, trafficconditions and transport orders – all in real-time.

The second driver is the capability of M2M topower innovation and the creation of newservices. This has the potential to enabletransformational business models, createsubstantial incremental value for enterprises and

a closer relationship with the consumer,improving the customer experience. We seemany historically product-centric companiestransforming into service-oriented companies.This is a dramatic shift for many industries.

Let’s look at a typical product-centric industry likeautomotive, and the direction it is taking withconnected cars. Here we look at new creativeservices, with the car interacting both with thedriver and external entities. The car, basicallyacting as the driver’s personal assistant, willprovide advanced driving analytics and guidanceon driving conditions. When recognising thedriver the car will connect him or her to apersonal cloud, displaying for example the latestemails and social network updates. Users arebeing able to locate their car and remotelyactivate car systems such as the climate control.In addition, we also have the M2M enabledcommunication between the car and externalmachines providing incremental value, forexample traffic light control, scheduling forappointment parking as well as services andoffers based on contextual user profile information.

General Motors as an example is creating what isessentially an iTunes app store for cars, an opendevelopment platform for apps enabling a wholenew way to interact with their customers. This in-vehicle app store will include infotainment andapp assistance to drive more safely or in a morefuel efficient manner, possibly decreasing thecosts of vehicle ownership.

The possibilities to develop a stronger customerengagement model are very real and exciting tobusinesses. By introducing innovative servicesand expanding their value chain with partners,companies are now able to not only get a closer

and more valuable relation with their existing customer base butalso to extend and address additional and different customerssegments than in the past.

Drivers and trends like these provide significant growthopportunities for operators, both through increased networktraffic and incremental value added services. And here the CSPshave significant opportunities to leverage their assets to go waybeyond telco.

VP: What do you mean with this, how do you see CSPstapping into this incremental growth, beyond thetraditional connectivity?

JA: Telcos have a long-standing track record of beingsuccessful service-oriented companies so they are not

only going to power the M2M revolution from apure network and connectivity perspective,

but they can also provide significantincremental value in other areas to thesehistorically product-focused industries.

CPSs have already started to provideindustrialised tools to enterprisecompanies simplifying their adoptionof M2M. Today, we see successfultelcos looking to evolve their offering,based on standard and scalableplatforms complemented bysolutions for specific verticalindustries. They are formingalliances and partnerships withother vendors and serviceproviders, to ensure globalfootprint, to unlock deep verticalvalue in different industries, andto facilitate the go-to-market.

By providing complete end-to-end solutions, CSPs arebecoming highly valuablepartners for enterprisecompanies within differentindustries that are looking totransform their businesses withM2M.

As holistic B2B service providers,telcos will be moving away from

traditional business models. Thefounder of the cosmetics company

Revlon once famously said: “In thefactory, we make cosmetics. In the

drugstore, we sell hope.” And it could notbe more true for M2M, where it is all about

enabling, pricing and selling the industryspecific value.

VP: What types of core competencies canCSPs make use of to become the driver ofthe M2M industry?

JA: The reason why telcos will be the bigwinners in the M2M explosion is because theycan fully exploit many of their core capabilitiesand assets. They have the experience with large-scale service delivery and, when you considerthat the service they are delivering is up andrunning 99.99% of the time – the kind ofavailability that mission critical M2M scenarioswill require - no one does this better than a CSP.Big data analytics, mass volume billing for microservices, and advanced management of largescale customer business data systems areadditional telco strengths.

In addition, network connectivity and the globalreach of telcos will absolutely be required forsuccessful M2M scenarios. Global industries willhave devices that must be connected in all partsof the world. Businesses in these industries willrely on a partner that has the operationalexpertise and a network to deliver a highlyreliable cloud platform.

Finally, CSPs have built a strong arsenal ofpartners in terms of content, apps, specialisedsolutions and services and integration, as well asmodule and terminal vendors. Thosepartnerships are now being complemented tosupport further vertical solutions, to quicklyrollout and scale up end-to-end services for M2M.

VP: Where are the immediate opportunities?

JA: I believe that there are opportunities foralmost every industry to adopt some form ofM2M scenario. CSPs would best be served bylooking at the industries where they have thestrongest footprint, allowing them to build upontheir current strengths.

Regulation might force uptake in some sectors,such as in energy and automotive. For example,eCall in Europe, for automatic emergency callingin case of a car crash; the Contran resolution inBrazil, requiring all vehicles to be fitted with ananti-theft tracking device with the intention toreduce car thefts and lower car insurance rates;and in the UK the government’s Committee onClimate is requiring smart meters to be installedin each residence by 2020 to support the overallgoal to reduce the UK’s greenhouse gasemissions. That’s approximately 50 million newmeters.

That said, some of the early adopter industrieswill probably be transportation, automotive,public sector, utilities and consumer products.SAP has worked with leading companies in eachof these verticals to develop proof of concepts.One example being smart vending machines thatcommunicate with the delivery trucks in order toensure that the product is always fresh and

available to consumers when they want it, and toimprove the efficiency of the distribution process.

Or take a look at Smart City projects that usesensors on all public transportation inconjunction with traffic controls to ensureefficient travel, and alerts to your car’s controlsystem in case of bad weather. Cars outfittedwith sensors can communicate with parkingspots to allow them to find the closest, availableplace to park. Sensors able to monitor vital signsof high-risk patients will direct emergencyservices to arrive before a cardiac event occurs,and smart metering sensors will reduce cityenergy cost and waste. These are just a few ofthe scenarios in some industries that I expect willlead the change in the M2M space.

VP: What are successful partner strategiesfor CSPs?

JA: CSPs will partner smartly in order to go tomarket in a timely fashion, deliver industryspecific solutions and focus on their own corecompetencies to drive a successful M2Mbusiness. It will take the power of three tosuccessfully go to market – meaning that telcosneed to partner with both a networkmanagement provider as well as an M2Msoftware platform provider.

VP: What do those partners offer?

JA: Network management is the layer that dealswith the connectivity management and OSS/BSSintegration and connects directly to the networksthemselves.

The M2M software platform would for exampleinclude the app enablement framework, the datamanagement portion and device management.This layer needs to work seamlessly with theenterprise backbone. This is where SAP can helpCSPs by delivering a complete software platformfor rolling out M2M services. SAP brings acomplete suite of analytics, cloud, real-timeprocessing, and mobility solutions. This iscomplemented by a scalable event agnosticcharging and billing solution for B2B andadvanced partnership management, plus ourindustry specific solutions and expertise withintwenty-four different verticals.

Telcos should look for partners in the softwareindustry with a successful track record in thoseverticals they want to go after with M2Mservices. The market has tremendous potentialand many of the CSPs that I’ve spoken withexpect over 5% of their revenue to come fromM2M services in the short-term. Selecting theright partners will be a critical success factor forsustainable and profitable growth beyond telco.

Getting round the new siteFira Gran Via is comprised of eight exhibition halls under a single roof. The layout begins with Hall1, located at the South Entrance, and continues to Hall 8 and the North Entrance. In the heart ofFira Gran Via lies Congress Square, which is set to be a great meeting and gathering point.

Halls 1 to 7 are single-level spaces but thanks to a dual-level walkway connecting the halls,complete with moving sidewalks, escalators and elevators, there’s plenty of space for 70,000attendees to move along quickly.
