Rodriguez was drafted in high school by the Kansas City Royals in the 17th round of the 1981 Major League Baseball Draft, but did not sign, opting to accept a full baseball scholarship to the University of Tennessee. As a freshman at UT, Rodriguez earned a spot on the USA Team and was selected first team All-SEC his sophomore year. He was drafted once again by the New York Mets in the 9th round of the 1984 Major League Baseball Draft, and signed, beginning a Major League Baseball career that spanned from 1990 through 2003. A relief pitcher/left-handed specialist, Rodriguez was often brought in to face big hitters in key situations. Rodriguez’s talent and dedication to the sport enabled him to pitch in over 600 games with the San Francisco Giants, St. Louis Cardinals, Florida Marlins, New York Mets, Cleveland Indians, Texas Rangers and San Diego Padres.
