“ There‘s no other place I would rather be, where I am constantly surrounded by some of the most beautiful scenery that can’t help but inspire.” Catherine Best

I hope you enjoy our 2013 Collection.

Inside, you’ll find new designs and new season editions of favourite collections using some of the most beautiful and rarest gems from around the world.

You’ll find pieces that are one-off and will never be repeated, others are limited editions and others, like ‘Amour Letters’ are continuing collections that are designed for lovers of all means.

I wake every day lucky to have clients enjoying our jewellery in over 32 countries. And all created from knowledge and skills passed down through generations of master jewellers. I am conscious we have a duty to continue this heritage, and this year we were proud to be unique in the UK in having four apprentices in training for the prestigious IPG qualifications.

I’m especially happy to welcome my daughter, Vikki Freeman (pictured), who has recently joined the company to build on her degree in Goldsmithing and help me continue the success of Catherine Best (you can see one of her designs on page 60).

I get asked where my inspiration comes from. It comes from the heart. And the designs flow from emotion to creation using pencil and paper. All pieces in the 2013 collection are designed and made by hand. And, as you look at this season’s pieces, I hope you feel there is something pure and mystical about the energy that flows into precious metal and stones to create a piece of beauty.

I truly hope you enjoy looking at the designs in our 2013 Collection. When you’ve finished, visit us in the studio or our online store where you can learn more about the jewellery we offer and the options you have when buying.

You can also register for my news updates to keep you informed of the latest additions and events we run during the year. You’ll also be kept up to date with the latest news about who’s wearing Catherine Best and about the continued support of the Born Free Foundation.

Happy browsing.

We have two workshops – one in Guernsey and the other Jersey. They are headed by Phil Horton who believes strongly that what we do here is a way of life, a passion, and not just a job.

Philip HortonPhil’s experience and expertise as a jeweller were recognised by the Institute of Professional Goldsmiths, when they honoured him with the title of ‘Master Jeweller.’ To be recognised by your peers is an enormous honour but to be the only person to hold such a title says everything about Phil’s incredible talents and dedication.

In recognition of his work Phil has also been given Freedom of London and Freedom of Goldsmiths Company and is Master of the Dutch Guild of Master Goldsmiths.

Paul TranterPaul has been granted a Fellowship of the Institute of Professional Goldsmiths. In order to attain his fellowship Paul produced an array of stunning pieces, many of which were on display at Goldsmiths Fair, “To have my work judged by my peers is a real challenge, and is the very highest standard of scrutiny. It makes me incredibly proud”.

Kim TorodeKim has completed her five year apprenticeship under her master Phil Horton and was recognised by the island for both her efforts and her results when she won Guernsey’s prestigious ‘Apprenticeship of the year award’.

Matthew HortonMatthew, our newest addition to the team, has now begun his apprenticeship. His attitude fits perfectly with the team and he’s really learning at a fast pace. Son of master jeweller Phil Horton he really is a chip off the old block.

The workshops on the premises in Guernsey and Jersey are open seven days a week. There is always a jeweller present at the bench. You can watch them create while browsing the collections.

CeleBRITY & NeWS

The Sword of Justice – award winner at the Goldsmiths Craft & Design Awards.

Above is Somerset House the beautiful venue for the annual Goldmsith’s Pavillion.

Catherine Best at the BAFTAsFrom the BAFTAs to weddings and charity auctions, you’ll find Catherine Best jewellery is being chosen by celebrities from across the world of entertainment.

Guernsey’s own broadcaster and writer, Dawn Porter and her husband, actor Chris O’Dowd, chose Catherine Best wedding rings for their marriage. The simple rings reflected the intimacy of their personal and informal wedding day.

Her wedding day wasn’t the only occasion on which Dawn chose to wear Catherine Best jewellery. Supporting Chris’s nomination for a BAFTA, Dawn wore a set of handmade 18ct white gold, diamond and black sapphire earrings to the most important awards event in British entertainment.

Born Free FoundationThose who watched the film Elsa: The Lioness That Changed the World will understand why Born Free is so important to the preservation of wildlife, and why Born Free is supported by celebrities including Joanna Lumley, Martin Clunes, Bryan Adams, Rachel Hunter, Helen Worth, Jenny Seagrove, Martin Shaw and Brian May.

This year Amanda Holden was stunning when she modelled the new Born Free Moon Sign range.

The range of earrings, pendants and cufflinks was designed by Catherine in collaboration with astrologer, Sharon Ward who provides a scroll which elaborates on your individual Moon Sign.

Profits from all Moon Sign jewellery go to the Foundation to help save animals facing extinction.

Catherine Best, Award WinnerAs well as being worn to awards, Catherine Best jewellery is an award winner itself!

The Goldsmsith Company has been responsible for 700 years for testing the quality of gold and silver and since 1975 for platinum.

The word hallmark originates from the fifteenth century when London craftsmen were first required to bring their artefacts to Goldsmiths’ Hall for assaying and marking.

And it’s with great pleasure that such an illustrious institution continues to give awards for our work.

Catherine and Phil have been awarded Freedom of London in recognition for their contribution to the craft.

And in the Goldsmiths Craft & Design Awards, Master Jeweller, Phil Horton FIPG, won the top award in the Diamond Mounters Senior category for the ‘Sword of Justice’, a bespoke piece that was hand made by Phil and set with diamonds, rubies, pearl and aquamarine with delicate enamel to finish.

The award is a huge honour for Phil and everyone at Catherine Best and reflects the continuing exceptionally high standards of both design and craftsmanship.

Following the win, the Sword of Justice was exhibited at The Goldsmith’s Hall in London.

Inclusion at the event is an enormous tribute to the standards of craftsmanship attained by Phil and the team and Catherine’s design capabilities and imagination.

Exhibitions and FairsIt was wonderful to meet new and existing clients at the Goldsmith’s Pavillion, Somerset House and at the Goldsmith’s Fair, Goldsmith’s Hall. We will be exhibiting in 2013 – look out for details on the web site or subscribe to our newsletter to receive details.

Visiting The StudiosThe studios are located in historic mills down beautiful country lanes in Guernsey and Jersey and add to the occasion when you visit.
