MARY MAGDALENE AND THE RISEN CHRISTMy Easter continues whenever I discover new expressions of the encounter of Mary Magdalene at the empty tomb of Jesus. Most of you know the story of how she visited the empty tomb and wept, because the body of Jesus was not there. Standing there, however, was a man who looked like the gardener; and she asked him whether or not he had taken away the body of Jesus. When the man said, simply, “Mary,” she knew immediately that the unknown man was Jesus. She had mistaken him for the gardener (John 20:11-18).

I have enjoyed, over the years in previous classes and sermons, using so many artistic representations of that beautiful event. But, this past Sunday, I discovered still another way to interpret that famous Bible story! Below is a reproduction of “Saint Mary Magdalene at the Sepulchre,” by the 16th century artist, Savoldo.

In his daily meditation for 4 April 2016, the modern Franciscan Richard Rohr (a mystic and a hero!) speaks about how each of us seeks reality in Christ; yet, what the true risen Christ really shows us is our true self, a truth that is already deep inside us. Says Rohr, “This is the new self that can say with Paul, ‘I live no longer, not “I” but it is Christ now living in me’ (Galatians 2:20).” Rohr concludes, “In the truest sense, I am that which I am seeking.”

Here, in this 16th century painting, the artist Savoldo has expressed that instant, that moment, when Mary Magdalene looks straight at Jesus and realizes who he is. But, in the painting, she is looking at…us! The viewers! You and me! Christ is in us! Christ in us, the hope of glory. May the risen Christ be in you today. May the risen Christ be you!

CANON WILLIAMS TAKES ON NEW ROLE AS CANON ASSOCIATE FOR PASTORAL CAREYou know Canon Carolynne Williams as a caring pastor, an engaged teacher, and a heart-felt preacher. You have no doubt learned from experience that she is as wise as she is elegant. You may not know, however, that she loves to travel and that the non-rev pass she holds from her days as a senior Delta flight attendant allows her to go all over the world just by driving to the airport and getting on the next plane!

After almost seventeen years serving at the Cathedral in various capacities, currently as the Canon for Pastoral Care, Carolynne has decided that she would like to travel more. She is not leaving, but she will be spending less time with us. As of the first of this month, her new title will be Canon Associate for Pastoral Care. We will still enjoy her presence, as she will continue to do what she does so well at the Cathedral. And, of course, we will all be expecting small, but meaningful gifts after her return from each of her exotic sojourns!

CO-LISTENING

“Co-listening” is a simple but potentially powerful practice where two people take turns listening to each other. Its simplicity tempts us to minimize the benefits, however. So this spring, I’m resuming co-listening classes at the Cathedral. All interested persons are invited to attend one or more of the sample introductory classes offered through April 20 and instructed by yours truly. These “Introduction to Co-Listening” classes will teach and enhance peer coaching skills that make it possible to maximize one’s personal growth and interpersonal goals as fully as one chooses. Remarkable results can be achieved by people across all age groups and multiple

backgrounds who learn to listen effectively.

Introductory classes for Wednesday evenings, March 30–April 20 from 6–8 p.m. are offered free of cost. Then will follow a

final opportunity on Wednesday, April 27, from 6-8:30 p.m., to consider and possibly be invited to join the series that runs through July 27. The April 27 class will also commence a sliding-scale cost affordable for any budget. All classes meet in Room 133. For more information on “co-listening,” visit www.rc.org. RSVP to Thee Smith, 404-727-0636 or [email protected].
