In every classroom, from Kindergarten to grade eight, students were in charge of making their learning transparent. They shared their accomplishments, some of their struggles, and their pas- sion for learning. The Middle School students once again hosted a Celebra- tion of Learning, taking over most of the upper floor and turning it into a wondrous, meandering gallery walk. In conjunction with the Middle School program was a presentation about digi- tal citizenship, the likes of which we had never seen. Darren Laur, a Staff Sergeant with VicPD and principle owner of Personal Protection Systems Inc. presented a no-holds-barred lec- ture on Internet predation, peer aggres- sion (which is not bullying, but is actu- ally violence punishable under the law) while he busted the myth that there still is privacy on the Internet. He im- pressed upon us all, students and teachers alike, that every time we en- gage in social media we are creating a digital portfolio that will act as a re- sume for college recruiters and future employers. If you missed the presenta- tion today, I highly recommend you attend one of his events in the future. Our Junior Kindergarten staff and stu- dents have weathered the move to the St. Matthias Church property on Richardson Street. If March came in like a lion with all the organizing, packing, transporting and setting up the new location, it surely left like a lamb. The staff and children are very happy in their new location with the HUGE back yard. A special thanks is due to Todd and the JK staff for the extra time and effort they put in to en- sure a very smooth transition. Special thanks as well to Malcolm Read (Chair of the School Board), Bob Cuthill and Bill Taylor (Parishioners) and our own Brodie Burt for volunteering their mus- cles on moving day. Don’t forget about the Grand Opening on April 9, at 3:00 pm. I hope you all have a joyous Easter. Please note, there are many special ser- vices at the Cathedral this weekend and many of our families will be in atten- dance at some of them. The Bishop, the Rt. Rev. Dr. Logan McMenamie, will be at both the 9:15 and the 11:00 am services this Sunday. His sermons are most inspiring! A Message from the Head of School Dear Parents and

Guardians,

Today all the students

of Christ Church Ca-

thedral School proudly

demonstrated their learning to parents,

grandparents, teachers, and each other.

In every classroom, from Kindergarten

to grade eight, students were in charge

of making their learning transparent.

They shared their accomplishments,

some of their struggles, and their pas-

sion for learning. The Middle School

students once again hosted a Celebra-

tion of Learning, taking over most of

the upper floor and turning it into a

wondrous, meandering gallery walk.

In conjunction with the Middle School

program was a presentation about digi-

tal citizenship, the likes of which we

had never seen. Darren Laur, a Staff

Sergeant with VicPD and principle

owner of Personal Protection Systems

Inc. presented a no-holds-barred lec-

ture on Internet predation, peer aggres-

sion (which is not bullying, but is actu-

ally violence punishable under the law)

while he busted the myth that there still

is privacy on the Internet. He im-

pressed upon us all, students and

teachers alike, that every time we en-

gage in social media we are creating a

digital portfolio that will act as a re-

sume for college recruiters and future

employers. If you missed the presenta-

tion today, I highly recommend you

attend one of his events in the future.

Our Junior Kindergarten staff and stu-

dents have weathered the move to the

St. Matthias Church property on

Richardson Street. If March came in

like a lion — with all the organizing,

packing, transporting and setting up

the new location, it surely left like a

lamb. The staff and children are very

happy in their new location with the

HUGE back yard. A special thanks is

due to Todd and the JK staff for the

extra time and effort they put in to en-

sure a very smooth transition. Special

thanks as well to Malcolm Read (Chair

of the School Board), Bob Cuthill and

Bill Taylor (Parishioners) and our own

Brodie Burt for volunteering their mus-

cles on moving day. Don’t forget

about the Grand Opening on April 9,

at 3:00 pm.

I hope you all have a joyous Easter.

vices at the Cathedral this weekend and

dance at some of them. The Bishop,

the Rt. Rev. Dr. Logan McMenamie,

will be at both the 9:15 and the 11:00

am services this Sunday. His sermons

are most inspiring!

May you find peace in the knowledge

that God and our deep faith can trans-

form the darkest of Fridays into the

brightest of Sundays.

Thu. April 2 - Mon. Apr. 6 Easter Break. School is Closed. Lux Mundi is not available.

The Green Team wants to thank all the students, staff and parents for the tremendous support for Green Day on March 5.

The students enjoyed the outside activities at lunch: bocca ball, skipping, face painting, chalk drawing, and schlocky box

games. Many students wore green, ate garbage-less lunches and recess snacks and organized a variety of green ways to arrive

at school. A classroom contest was held to collect points for demonstrating ways to “go green”. The winning classroom was

grade 4.

The upcycled T-shirt bags were very popular and their sales went towards the Green Team’s new green t-shirts they wear

when participating in Green Team activities at the school.

The SPORTS Page All updates by Brodie Burt

Grade 7/8 Running Club

A small but dedicated group of runners have continued to train three times per week, some of whom

are preparing for the TC 10k later this month. We will continue to meet Mondays after school, and

Wednesdays and Fridays during morning recess until the end of the school year. New members are always

welcome and there is no cost to join!!!

Grade 3-5 Intramurals

The Soccer / Baseball season is currently in progress, and Costa Rica, China, and Mexico are all in

hot pursuit of the title. A winner has yet to be determined, so a recap of the season will be available

in next month’s newsletter!

Track and Field

The track and field club will begin training on the morning of Thursday, April 9th at the Oak Bay

track. Students will need to provide their own transportation to practices, but they will be bused

back to the school following each practice. Practices will run from 7:10 until 8:00 am on Tuesdays and Thurs-

days through the months of April and May. The two track meets that we participate in are scheduled for Tues-

day, May 26th and Friday, June 5th.

Badminton

The middle school badminton teams have been practicing in preparation for their season, which kicks

off on April 1st and continues each Wednesday through the rest of the month. We have a large team,

and not all venues have the court space to accommodate all of our players. Therefore a travelling roster will

be posted on the Mondays prior to each tournament indicating which students will be playing that week.

Health Bulletin from Island Health

Christ Church Cathedra l School Apr i l 1, 2015

“SCREEN” TIME CAN BE HARMFUL TO YOUR CHILDREN’S HEALTH

Screen time, or time spent watching TV, playing video games, using a mobile phone or in front of a computer, has been linked with many harmful effects to children’s health. Research shows the strongest predictor of childhood obesity is the number of hours spent watching TV, surfing the net or playing computer or video games. Other re-search has shown that:

Children who watch more TV eat more calories and drink more pop.

Children who watch TV eat more low-nutrient, high-calorie foods.

Academic achievement drops sharply for children who watch more than 10 hours of TV a week.

TV interferes with the development of intelligence, thinking and imagination skills.

TV interferes with language development.

TV impedes development of longer attention spans.

Certain types of TV cultivate aggressive or violent behaviours.

It is recommended that children and youth aged 5 to 18 years have at least 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity every day in order to achieve and maintain a healthy weight and for proper gross and fine motor development. Moderate to vigorous physical activity includes bike riding, play at the park, swimming and running.

The Canadian Sedentary Behaviour Guidelines recommend limiting recreational screen time to no more than 2 hours a day, and limiting the overall amount of sedentary time spent sitting and indoors each day.

Encourage your children to be active by:

Being active yourself!

Playing outdoor or indoor games.

Being active as a family. Go for a walk or hike together every day before or after dinner.

Taking advantage of after school programs.

Finding an activity or sport they like to do. Sign up for a group that meets regularly at the local recreation cen-tre.
