A look like this is all about abstract. Try freehanding a pattern by mapping out sections with designer tape—you can weave around it and then peel it off as you finish each section! And for eye-catching texture, incorporate wool roving into your design.

Here’s a trend that’s totally worth trying: It’s gorgeously hip loom weaving, and it’s a DIY-décor dream! The best part? It’s super easy (and cheap!) to get started. Just grab a loom (store-bought or homemade work great), and get ready to weave away.

Dowels work great for hanging your tapestry, but don’t be afraid to try tree branches, paintbrushes, or whatever you can get your hands on!

A tribal-inspired triangle and a waterfall of rya-knot

tassels make this woven wonder a true conversation

starter. And designs like this are easy to DIY—just be sure to plan out your pattern before you start weaving. For the tassels, knot them into the design as you work.

The joy of loom weaving is all in the creative freedom—you’re not limited to one design or even one technique.

CASE IN POINT: We made this fabulously fringe-y piece by tying on rows and rows of rya knots instead of weaving traditionally. Scroll over to page 5 to find the full instructions!

Step up your all-about-yarn wall game by thinking outside the loom: We made this abstract stunner by wrapping small steel rings with yarn, wrapping them to each other, and then wrapping them to a pair of twisty branches. The trick? Choose a free-flowing design, and let your inner artist take the lead.

Once you’ve got a handle on the basics, it’s time to start experimenting. Think about incorporating twigs, tassels or beads into the weave—they’ll keep your eye moving across the piece. And striped yarn is another plus: You can stick with a simple symmetrical design without losing an ounce of wow-factor.

String yarn onto pegs, alternating top and bottom as shown—this will form the warp, or strands that you will weave your working yarn (weft) onto.

When you’ve reached the bottom right peg, knot yarn again to secure.

NOTE: Although yarn is doubled back to form a knot, treat both strands of knotted portion as one strand when weaving.

SUPPLIES: • Cotton yarn (for warp)

• Yarn in various colors and weights (for weft)

• Weaving loom

• Weaving needle

• Scissors

• Rod or branch to hang tapestry on

Loop yarn around top left peg as shown, and knot to secure.

Tie lengths of yarn onto warp using rya knots. For bottom row, pull knots all the way down to rest under pegs. Continue making rows of knots as desired.

Remove finished tapestry from loom. To secure weaving, cut through center of all loops at top, leaving two loose yarn ends where loop was. Then tie loose ends together along top of tapestry.

Alternate rows of knots in varied yarn colors as desired. When using thinner-weight yarn, group multiple strands together and knot onto warp as shown.

Stitch through top of tapestry and around rod or branch to hang.
