ReCONEditioning™ ServiceAt JSP we have operated our ReCONEditioning™ service for 10 years. You palletise your road cones and send them to us. We will replace tops, bases, sleeves where necessary and send back reCONEditioned road cones back to you. This avoids costly landfill, is environmentally friendly and is cheaper than purchasing a new cone. It enables you to maximise the life of your road cone components and provides you an ongoing service from JSP. See page 20 for more details.

Reducing Carbon Emissions JSP are working with their customers to minimise carbon emissions as well as reduce costs. This will help the government achieve the Kyoto targets - a 5% reduction on 1990 emissions levels by 2012. We are actively analysing our customers purchasing profiles to suggest most economic delivery plans - enabling a reduction in transactions and the associated transactional costs. Where customers are purchasing daily from us, we are actively encouraging a twice weekly or once weekly service.

Coloured Barriers All of the Barriers that we make at JSP can be made in any colour to meet a customer/clients wishes. This can be good to create or solidify a brand identity and be instantly recognisable to people seeing them. The TitanTM Barrier can be made in more than one colour, offering many variations to suit a customer/clients needs. Colouring barriers also creates a deterrent to thieves.

Coloured FeetSome JSP barriers can have their feet coloured to create even more variations and further enhance an identity, or create even more of a deterrent to thieves.

Logo and details on Barriers All of the Barriers that we make at JSP have an area where a customer/clients logo or details can be applied. There are two ways that this can be done, simply by hot-foil printing or by embossing and then over-printing making it much harder to remove. Both of these methods offer a deterrent to thieves.

Branding Boards Some of the barriers have areas where courtesy and branding boards can be attached. Branding board can be made with any print quality graphic with an image and/or logo and any contact details. The area is large than that offered by the barrier itself, so can be seen from a further distance.

StackableThe clever design allows for simple and practical storing, stacking, and un-stacking.

Contractor BrandingThere is a large area to allow contractor branding details to be hot-foil or embossed. The one-piece mould can be made in any colour and a three-piece version can be made with different coloured end pieces to match a corporate identity. Even the feet can be coloured to suit.

TogglesBranding/courtesy boards can quickly be attached using easy to lock and unlock toggles.

TITaN™ BaRRIER The Titan™ is the recognised and well established stacking barrier from JSP, it has all the usual advantages of standard stackable systems but in addition has many unique features. Titan™ has undergone modifications to further improve longevity and to meet the proposed NRSWA changes effecting wind stability, setout in BS8442 when erected and assembled correctly.

dURaBILITy/ROBUSTNESSWe leave the barrier after moulding for 12 hours minimum then slowly drive a 4000Kg Fork Lift Truck over it.

During this test the barrier does not break, crack, split or parts come away. Some minor damage/marking is seen but the barrier is still usable.

Each production batch is tested to prove that the material is to our required specification.

Any angle below this and the barrier will move back to the correct upright position.

The reading on the balance is > 7.5Kg. Our balance only reads up to 7.5Kg!

STaBILITy OF BaRRIERWe have carried out a ‘Balance Point’ test on many competitors’ barriers to assess stability. Our system compares very favourably with all plastic barriers of this style and weight.

pULL TESTWe place a spring balance in the top, centre of a single barrier, we then note the maximum reading on the balance to pull the barrier away from its vertical, rest position. For a single barrier, the figure is approximately >3.2kg. We then link 3 barrier systems together and repeat this test on the middle/central barrier.

This angle can be seen to be approximately 45 degrees to the vertical.

Whilst popular 2m long barriers are very effective they can prove awkward when the Footway™ needs to be closed to protect the public. JSP have devised a method to overcome such occurrences by integrating our single WorkGate ™ panel with existing Titan™, Barricader™ or Citadel™ barriers’.

ROadBLOC™ TRaFFIC SEpaRaTORThe NEW RoadBloc™ from JSP has been manufactured from Solathene™ HD and the system has been extensively trialled to ensure that it surpasses the demands and expectations bestowed on Traffic Separators by today’s Traffic Management industry. It’s unique hinge allows it to form a mini roundabout with just eight units and to bend upwards so that they can stand firm on uneven ground. They can also be stacked very conveniently. ROadWaLL™ TRaFFIC SEpaRaTOR A versatile traffic barrier system with excellent impact resistance, which is manufactured from UV stabilising polyurethane. It incorporates a unique captive pin linking system, enabling straight or curved configurations, ideal for rapid deployment. The size of each unit is L:164cm, W:45cm, H:65cm, and can be weighted with either a sand ballast or 160ltr of water via a threaded filler, with a lower plug for easy drainage. Easily positioned with a forklift and has an integral lamp recess for twin battery road hazard lamps.

ReCONEditioning™ is our unique environmentally friendly service where we can refurbish your old two-part cones into new ones. The cost is considerably less than buying new cones and this service also offers another economical solution,

where costly landfill tax can be avoided and the life cycle of the product is extended. The ReCONEditioning™

logo next to a product indicates that the cone can be recycled using the

ReCONEditioning™ service.

The reCONediTiONiNg™ prOCess is simple

• JSP collect old bases regardless of make. The bases must be wrapped on pallets and a minimum of three pallets is required.

• Atourproductionfacilitymouldedembossed tops complete with SealbriteTM sleeves are assembled to the old bases.

• Whencompletedtheconesarere-palleted and wrapped, and then transported back to a specified delivery point.

The following questions are examples of those that have been frequently posed on our Technical Helpline. If any of these answers don’t match your question, please give the Helpline on 01993826051 a call and we will try to solve your query.

Nearly all answers can be found in “Safety at StreetWorksandRoadWorks,ACodeofPractice”or “The Traffic Signs Regulations and General Directions”. The first is an easily read booklet while the second is a 500 or so official document. The second is the law, the first will tell you what to put on the road way and where to comply with the law. If you are involved with street and road works, JSP would strongly advise that you purchaseacopyof“SafetyatStreetWorksandRoadWorks,ACodeofPractice”, or download at www.dft.gov.uk, in addition both documents are available from The Stationery Office.

How do I know what size of cone to put on the road? The size of cone that you use is determined by the speed at which traffic uses the road. On most roads in a built up area the speed limit is 30mph and cone height required is 450mm (18”). Whenyoustartworkingonamotorwayyouthenneed a 750mm (30”) cone but you will find most contractors use a 1m cone. You can use bigger cones but you should not use smaller ones.

I have hired a skip which is going to be at the side of the road, the hire company is trying to sell me road lamps as well. Do I need those?If you are putting an obstruction in the road way then it has to be marked. You should really be putting signs up that show the obstruction is coming up and have cones around it to create a taper for the traffic. During the hours of darkness the skip is only required to be lit if the speed limit is 40mph or above, however JSP would suggest that you do light the skip. So what sort of lamps do I need, flashing?The type of lamp will depend on whether or not you have street lighting, if you do then a flashing lamp would be best as this will stand out against the background.

I have got some lamps and cone brackets, what is the correct way to put these on the cones I have?The most important thing to consider is not to reduce or cover the reflective part of the road cone. Many Maxilites™ are fitted to the bracket and then put on a cone with the lens down, it must point up. The Maxilite™, and other JSP lamps, has drain holes in the bottom so that moisture can flow out and not affect the circuits. If the lamp fills with rain, not only will it go out but it will also be obscuring the reflective sleeve of the cone.

How long do the batteries in your lamp last? That will depend on several factors including natural light levels and temperature. JSP offer lamps with or without photocells, these will turn the lamp on or off when it gets dark or light. This is ideal for a work site that is left over the weekend but it will also prolong the life of the battery, particularly during the summer months when you are likely to leave the job before it gets dark and will be light before you get back the next day. In trials that have been carried out using

fresh batteries in September (halfway between longest day and night) the Maxilitie™ FPC has lasted 28 days.

Which of your barriers do I need to use around road works? If you are using a barrier system on the highway, it must have reflective emblem fitted, so that vehicle headlamps will make the barrier more obvious. You should also consider fitting warning lamps to the barrier if they are to be left in place over night. JSP traffic barriers all have the ability to fit lamps to them using the security bolt provided with the lamps.

The barriers don’t look like they will be able to stop a car hitting the people working in the road. That is correct, the barriers are a visual barrier, designed to indicate the presence of the road works to a driver. They will also help to stop the people working on the road from straying into on coming traffic while concentrating on their job.

I don’t have enough planks to set up the Dominator barrier system, can I just put planks in the top? No. Both planks are needed for a correct system. The lower panel is needed for those that are partially sighted and use a cane to detect obstacles. Their can will not find barrier and they may then walk into to the top rail and fall into the hazard, for this reason the lower rail is known as the Tapping Rail. The tapping rail can be a plain board, but this board should not be put into the top position as the contrasting red and white panels make the system more visible.

I have put cones out, in the pattern as defined in the “Safety at Street Works” book, but an inspector has told me I haven’t used the right cones. What is he on about? The “Safety at StreetWorks”bookandthelawrequiresthatthe cones have reflective sleeves that comply with BS873, the British Standard or EN13422, the European Standard. If you did have cones that were made to these standards, then it may have been that the sleeves were too dirty for the reflective to work correctly.

So if the sleeves on my cones are damaged, can I get some replacements? Yes, JSP can supply replacement sleeves, just make sure that you know which cone that you have.

Have you a copy of portable traffic signals site approval? Have you considered the needs of cyclists and horse riders?
