Tampa Bay Rays – The Bestof the Best!

Boasting one of the best recordsin the league – including making theplayoffs four times in the past six years– you have more reasons than ever tocome watch the Rays play. In fact, theRays have won more games since2008 than any other team in theleague, with the exception of the Yan-kees – who have won just a handfulmore, despite an astronomical $900-million spending gap between the twoteams. In addition, they have accom-plished five 90-win seasons in the pastsix years, which is more than any otherteam in the MLB, and quite possiblyin the entire sport. So, when you gowatch your home team on the Tropi-cana Field, you truly are watching oneof the best teams in the Nation!

An inspiration to our youth, theplayers are a true testament to the no-tion, that if you dream big and workhard, anything is possible. Further-more, in all their success, they also rec-

ognize that giving back is just as im-portant as the sport they play and thatwithout you – their fans, their com-munity – what they have accomplishedwould never have been possible; whichis why they give back to the TampaBay area, not just to show gratitudeand thanks, but because they want tomake a difference in the lives of thosearound them! “At the end of the day,the name on the front of their jerseymeans more than the name on theirback,” says Mark. “When people seeour logo and our brand, I hope we’vedone enough for them to say, ‘that’smy team and those are my guys’. good supportive relationships witheveryone, not only staff to resident, but staff to staff and staff to family. The premise on having a good rela-tionship is that you build a sense ofcomfort and trust, so when you getinto the more intimate types of care, that can sometimes be embarrassingor intimidating, the resident feelsmore comfortable and safe.”

Schooling You onHealthy Eating Basics

It’s that season: kids are headedback-to-school and parents are resum-ing their routines after a summer offun. Although your schedule may bechanging, it’s important to rememberyou don’t have to sacrifice healthy liv-ing while getting back in the groove.A balanced diet helps keep up peakperformance mentally and physicallythroughout the day, making it an im-portant habit to maintain.

Follow these easy tips to transi-tion into your back-to-school scheduleand make healthy decisions for thewhole family.

1. Start Smart. “Breakfast is themost important meal of the day.”We’ve all heard it before and it’s true, especially for children, who are still de-veloping. Be sure to have some break-fast staples ready to go for eachmorning, including things such assteel cut or old-fashioned oats (avail-able in our bulk department for extrasavings), whole grain bread, no-sugaradded cereals (I recommend Engine 2Rip’s Big Bowl), nut butters, unsweet-

ened non-dairy milks and a variety offresh fruit to help get your day started.

2. Grab-and-Go. School cafete-rias can sometimes be a challengingplace to find healthy choices. Considermaking meals at home so that you can“grab-and-go” healthy lunches foreveryone in the family. Try some freshGreen Beans with Pecans and Clemen-tine Dressing, flavor packed WholeWheat Pasta with Kale and Sun-DriedTomatoes or super easy, kid-friendlyCollard Rolls. These, and many more, recipes are available at http://whole-foodsmarket.com/recipes.

(Time saving tip: Double yourdinner recipes to pack single servecontainers for tomorrow’s lunch whencleaning up!)

3. Pack your Pantry. Havingstaple “go-to” pantry items such ascanned beans, whole wheat pasta, nuts and seeds, rather than boxes ofmacaroni and cheese or other “conve-nience” foods goes a long way inmaking healthy decisions. Dinnersmade of no sugar and no oil added

frond split Cuban bread produced byTampa’s La Segunda bakery. AtCigar City Brewpub they celebrateand pay homage to this unique her-itage by making Tampa’s native dishesthe cornerstone of their menu.

Keeping with this concept, thebeer menu too, takes this same ap-proach, with beer inspired and namedafter some of Tampa’s noted histori-cal influencers, including theirPaulina Pedroso Brown Ale and ClaraFrye IPA. Staying true to the area, they even offer a Northdale pale ale, aMr. Mabry’s IPA and my personal fa-vorite – the Carrollwood Cougar.Cigar City Brewpub also offers a fullliquor bar for those who are in themood for a different type of libation, although before trying a cocktail Ihighly recommend you try one oftheir fabulous brews!

In the past year, Cigar City hasquickly become a favorite amongstCarrollwood residents, who enjoy thehomey feel and superb offerings ofthis locally run brewpub. Whether youare looking to grab a quick lunch, anice family dinner, or a few drinksafter work, you are sure to have agood time at Cigar City Brewpub.

Local Gaither High School swimcoach Sam Currey is a huge fan ofCigar City Brewpub. He says, “I wasso excited when I found out CigarCity was opening a location is Carroll-wood. This is one of my favorite placesto eat. From the cooks in the back tothe servers and bartenders, they all doa great job. The presentation istremendous. I love the beer, love thefood and love the service.” Whenasked what his favorite menu item is,he replied, “What isn’t my favorite –from the sandwiches to the oysters tothe shrimp and grits, everything isamazing! We came here for Mother’sDay and after a recommendation, al-most the entire table ordered theswordfish tacos. I have never hadswordfish tacos before but everybodyloved them. You have to try them onyour next visit!”

Walking in to Cigar City Brewpub, you will surely notice the innovativedécor, almost all of which has been“up-cycled” from their brewery. Fromtheir fixtures made from brewery bar-rels, to the beer cans around the lightsto their built in bar, which is also madeout of cans, this eco-friendly Brewpubbrings a little bit of the brewery to you;even the tables are up-cycled, madefrom re-used pallets and old brewery

equipment. Getting past the décor, onecan hardly miss the huge brewery canis-ters, which are not so conspicuouslyhidden in the back corner of the bararea, where Head Brewer Tim Ogdenbrews his amazing creations!

BeerWhen it comes to beer, Tim

Ogden knows a thing or two abouthow to make the perfect brew; fromthe first sip – no matter what beer youchoose – you are bound to taste theCigar City difference. Putting an idio-syncratic spin on some of your classicfavorites, Tim’s original recipes are au-thentically one-of-a-kind and anythingbut your typical beer. “A lot of thebeers that Tim makes are outside ofthe set beer categories”, says GeneralManager Russell Simons. “We don’tjust do what every one else is doing,”adds Tim “We put an irreverent spinon what you might be used to andcreate something completely unique.”

What really separates Cigar Cityis the intertwining of their food andbeer menus. Uniquely designed tocomplement each other, Tim workshand in hand with Cigar City chefsMichael Cavanaugh and Ryan Brooksto masterfully create items that per-fectly accompany one another. “Ourbeers were designed to pair well withour food and our foods were de-signed to pare well with our beer,”says Tim. “When put together theyelevate each other and the presenceof the beer literally makes the foodbetter and vice versa.”

Showcasing a variety of differentbrewing styles, Cigar City Brewpubbrings the area a little bit of traditionwith their MILF series – which standsfor ‘Man I Love Firkins’! Utilizingone of the oldest brewing methods –the Firkin – this unique cask-ale seriesis served at a bit warmer temperature

than most traditional beer, and al-though it is still chilled, this differenceallows you to experience the complexflavors and aromas of the cask condi-tioned brew which doesn’t comethrough if it is too cold.

Russell says, “People are becom-ing accustomed to having more op-tions, and thereby gaining a greaterappreciation for better beer and betterfood. As the public becomes more ed-ucated about beer, they are able tomake their decision of choosing theright beer. People are looking for thatunique experience and that is exactlywhat we offer. We serve artisan-cre-ated beverages. With so many optionsavailable, why not choose full flavor.”

FoodWith many years of experience

working in fine-dining restaurantsaround the country, head chefs RyanBrooks and Michael Cavanaugh bring acreative twist to the Cigar City teamand their combined knowledge and ex-pertise is masterfully showcased in theexquisite fare you will find at this up-scale Brewpub. From handcrafted sal-ads to all natural beef burgers, freshseafood to mouthwatering sandwiches, they offer something for every tasteand preference; they even have a deli-cious selection of deserts for those witha sweet tooth. Cigar City has vegetarianoptions as well, such as their black beancakes, served with fire roasted salsaverde and chipotle sour cream. “JoeReddner{Cigar City’s founder’s father}is a vegan and he is always happy whenhe eats here,” says Ryan. “We alwayshave enough veggies to be creative andaccommodate vegetarians”.

Looking for a recommendation?A huge favorite at Cigar City Brew-pub, the aromatic distinction of theSmoked Swordfish Tacos is like noneother. From the first bite you will be

hooked – wrapped in a crispedmalanga boat, the smokiness of therum-cured swordfish is perfectly com-plemented by their fabulously sweethomemade pickled cabbage and com-bines for an amazing flavor that is outof this world. Seriously, these are thebest swordfish tacos I have ever eaten!

Another great appetizer idea istheir fresh- shucked oysters. Straightout of the gulf, these oysters are ac-companied by a trio of yummy beer-based sauces – Northdale Pale Alemignonette, Maduro Brown Ale cock-tail, and Paulina Pedroso Brown Alemignonette – which add a deliciouszing to the fresh oysters.

If you are in the mood for a juicyburger, you are in luck; Cigar Cityboasts a mouthwatering selection ofhormone-free, all-natural beef patties, including their BBQ Burger, toppedwith house brown ale-BBQ sauce, house pickles, house cured bacon,Swiss cheese, caramelized onions, asunny side up egg and mojo aioli on abrioche bun.

Or how about the Blue Burger, made with their all-natural beef pattyand topped with beefsteak tomatoes, bibb lettuce, house pickles, housebacon and St Pete’s cave-aged bluecheese, served on a brioche bun. Myhusband and I had this on our previousvisit, and wow, this burger is good!Best described as an explosion of flavor, the tender beef patty was cooked toperfection and the crisp bacon andcreamy blue cheese atop the sweet bunmake for the ultimate burger.

If you are in the mood for somegood ol’ southern cooking, you willlove their shrimp and grits! Made withcoarse grain grits, the texture is superb, and unlike most grits, which tend tohave a mushy consistency. Sitting in amoat of bisque and topped with freshseared jumbo shrimp – which are excel-
