Carrollwood: Tampa’s PremierNeighborhoods for Young Families!

By Matt Selby

It’s no secret that Tampa hasbecome the state’s newest hot spot. Infact, Realtor.com’s latest relocationstudy has named Tampa as the toprelocation destination in the entirecountry! According to the study, wehave some of the most affordablehome prices in America, which isstarting to become debatable in myopinion. The last six months inparticular have Tampa’s home pricessoaring 20% in certain places. Evenwith that being said, residents get thebest bang for their buck here. We havea strong Job market, which means it’snot just people of an elderly agemoving to Tampa Bay.

The Carrollwood area that we callhome is one of the fastest growingareas in Tampa Bay for youngprofessionals looking to buy anaffordable home and raise a family.Carrollwood ranks as the highest rateof relocation for Millennials in all ofTampa. Carrollwood is attracting fastgrowing millennial owned businesses

as well. Youngtalented men andwomen in theworkforce bringingnew ideas and skillsfor years to come issomething to be veryexcited about!

As I was writingthis editorial, enjoying mydelicious coffee atBrunchies (see their ad on page 14) Ioverheard a young couple about myage talking about how they justbought a home in a new communityby Mobley homes called SmitterReserve. I asked them what drewthem to Carrollwood and Mike said,“Carrollwood is the perfect place forus to buy a nice home at a price thatwas in our budget and enjoy a qualityof life we only dreamed about inSouth Tampa. We were house poorour first few years of marriage and itwas really hard for us. We didn’t likehaving to decide whether or not tomeet our friends or colleagues for

drinks or food after work or pay ourelectric bill because all of our moneyhad been spent on our mortgagealready,” he said with a snicker.

Someone recently asked me whatI thought the American dream was in2016 and I replied the same way Ialways have. The American dream forme is living in a place where I canraise a family, keep them safe, providefor them and enjoy our life together.Carrollwood is that place and I’mactually looking for a new home tostart that journey presently. Thefamily part too, I need to get workingon that!

“We give our customers thefeeling as if they are coming into ourhome and our kitchen,” says Andrea.“We provide such a familyatmosphere; this is a place wherepeople will drop their guard andrelax.”

Michael says, “Owning arestaurant gives me the ability to meetso many different people. I can walkup to any table and start talking tothem. I enjoy getting to know mycustomers.”

There is a reason why Michael’sGrill has been so successful for so long– making it through the dreadedrecession a couple years ago – and stillcontinues to go strong. “No matterhow tough times got, we neversacrificed the quality of our food andthe ingredients used,” says Andrea.“Michael always stayed true tohimself, only using real olive oil andcreams, and fresh vegetables andproduce.” Michael, in addition tobeing the owner, is also the head chefand creates everything from scratch, including all of the sauces, saladdressings, condiments and handcraftedsoups – including their award winningShe-Crab Bisque.

Michael says, “My motto is, if youdon’t have time to do it right, whenare you going to have a chance to doit again?”

With its elegant appeal andexquisite menu selection, Michael’sGrill is the perfect place to take yourdate for special occasions such asValentines Day and anniversaries. But,you don’t need a special occasion tocome to Michael’s Grill – withaffordable prices, this restaurant isgreat for lunch or dinner any night ofthe week. And, with their dailyspecials, which are featured on theirgiant chalkboard, there is alwayssomething new and exciting to try.

“The focal point of the restaurantis the chalkboard,” says Michael. “Thespecials change from day to day; wehave many customers who come injust for the chalkboard specials.”

At Michael’s Grill thepresentation of the meal is just asimportant as the meal itself, and each

dish truly is a creative masterpiece, allowing you to eat with your eyesbefore you take the first bite.

Looking over their lunch menu, which features a nice selection ofsoups, salads and sandwiches; I caneasily see why so many customerschoose this as their go-to spot forlunch.

In the mood for something onthe lighter side – you are sure to findsomething you’ll love in their saladsection, with options such as theirChicken Avocado Salad, made withmixed greens, tomatoes, avocado, mixed cheeses, and onions, topped increamy ranch and blackened chicken,or their famous City Slicker Salad –their version of the Cobb salad – madewith Romaine lettuce, chicken, bacon, blue cheese crumbles, avocado, tomatoes and tossed in a herbvinaigrette; this salad is every bit asdelicious as it sounds and has agenerous portion size that is sure tosatisfy any appetite.

Their sandwich selection is just asgreat, with a variety of yummyofferings, including wraps, burgersand their one-of-a-kind Chicken Juliesandwich. Named after Andrea’s sister,

who loves Brie cheese, this tantalizingsandwich showcases marinated grilledchicken topped with fried Brie, roastedred peppers and pear chutney on aKaiser bun. Served with theirhomemade honey mustard dippingsauce, the combination of flavors isabsolutely exquisite, and from the firstbite, when the warm Brie oozes out,you will be in sandwich heaven!

Just as impressive, is the dinnermenu, which has a fabulous variety ofoptions to choose from, withtantalizing appetizers such as stuffedmushrooms, escargot, and fried brie,to name a few.

On our previous visit we triedtheir Wasabi Crusted Tuna – whichjust so happens to be nominated as afinalist in the “Best Dish In The Biz”contest by the Tampa BusinessJournal, which is set to take place onNovember 6. With lightly crustedAhi grade tuna served in a teriyakiginger sauce, the crunchy outer layerwas expertly contrasted by thefreshness and tenderness of the tuna, and the flavors were tied in perfectlywith the sweet soy ginger glaze. Thisdish was superb!

are another great recommendation, and from the first steaming bite youwill be hooked. Voted #1 in Tampa, unlike some restaurants who skimp onthe crab, these crab cakes had hugechunks of Jumbo Lump Crab Meat.Seasoned and pan seared toperfection, when dipped in theirsignature dipping sauce, you will behooked for life!

Looking over the entrees on thedinner menu, I know I will soon beback, especially to try theirBlackberry Duck – crispy seared witha blackberry Demi sauce and servedwith mashed potatoes and veggies; ormaybe their Steak Au Poivre, which isnoted as being “a taste of Paris with abrandy zesty continental sauce, served with twice baked potato andchef’s veggies.”

No matter how full you are, youhave to try their dessert – Irecommend the Sticky ToffeePudding. “My mother’s recipe fromEngland, this is a secret recipe that no

one knows except me,” says Andrea. This moist English cake, which isserved in a toffee pecan saucealongside a scoop of vanilla ice cream, literally melts in your mouth as thesweet buttery sauce electrifies yourtaste buds!

Michael’s Grill has a full liquorbar, which includes a wine list, givingguests the option to order wines bythe glass or the bottle (make sure toask Andrea about the hidden wine list, which has special wines not listed onthe regular menu).
