With locations in Tampa, Bran-don, and Pinellas Park, Sound Ex-change is easily accessible to those inthe South Tampa community. Thestores are home to tens of thousandsof CDs, vinyl records, and movies.Whether you’re searching for a heavymetal album or a classic film on Blu-Ray, you’re likely to find it here.

And it’s not only music andmovies on the shelves: you’ll find aselection of freshly serviced turnta-bles, reel-to-reel tape decks, andother vintage stereo equipment.Comics, music and pop culturebooks, and collectible figures roundout the inventory.

This place is an entertainmentlover’s dream.

Erin Stoy, Marketing Directorand Vinyl Buyer, said that Sound Ex-change purchases all of its used itemsfrom the public. Staff stays busy pur-chasing items every day - from a sellerwho brings in a handful of CDs totrade towards new items, to a collec-tor ready to part with his completemusic collection.

“Customers have the option totake cash or store credit,” said Erin.“The store credit option is a 10%bonus over the cash offer. Many cus-tomers have been selling to use foryears because they know when theycome here, they will get a fair price.”Sound Exchange uses sales historydata, current market conditions, anddecades of experience to identify the

appropriate offer for an item. They regularly purchase items

from individuals liquidating the estateof a family member who has passedaway. Music and stereo equipmentthat might normally be discarded canfind a new, appreciative audience.

Sound Exchange regularly seeksvintage hi-fi. “We buy turntables frommost eras – anywhere from the late1960s to recently manufacturedturntables of good quality,” she said. They also purchase reel-to-reel players, amplifiers, receivers, and stereo speak-ers, especially from the “golden era”

of the 1970s. And if you have stereoequipment that you’d like to use but isnot working properly, Sound Ex-change can even repair it for you.

Each location boasts its own per-sonality. “All three stores have aslightly different flavor and clientele,”said Stoy. “There’s commonality, of

course, but because we buy so manyused items over the counter, the selec-tion in each store is different based onwhat people bring us.” She reportsthat many customers shop at all threestores, because there is different inven-tory in each one.

Determined tolearn more, Dr.Jachimek joined theASBP (AmericanSociety of BariatricPhysicians) and wentto their symposiumsfor further educa-tion and tools. She discovered thatthere are many contributing factors toweight gain - not just your diet.

Some of the major contributingfactors included hormonal imbal-ances, thyroid issues, environmentaltoxins, autoimmune disease, type 2diabetes, etc. It was then that she, opened the clinic to help people deal-

For many people, losing weightis at the top of their bucket list. Forothers, it is the only way to become, and feel healthy again. Many of ushave tried yo-yo diets, or buy the ex-pensive celebrity promoted trends, that pop up in social media and TVand radio commercial hype. Thefailed weight loss remains, and peo-ple are discouraged.

However, Medical Weight Loss,LLC at (813) 269-SLIM has beenproving for years, that weight loss, whether 10 pounds or 120 pounds, canbe done, safely and affordably!

Many different diseases, such asdiabetes, auto-immune problems andheart disease, are linked to beingoverweight. We know about thesethings. Weight loss is not just a mat-ter of looking good, but, is a medicalprogram of improving your healthand reducing your risks. Feeling bet-ter, is also a great by-product of slim-ming down.

Medical Weight Loss, LLC (269-SLIM), opened in 2007, and isheaded by Dr. Gail Jachimek. The

main clinic is located at 5111 EhrlichRoad. Their other clinics are in Wes-ley Chapel, FL., Lake Geneva, andWaukesha, Wisconsin. Their priceshave not increased since they beganthe medical weight loss practice.

Their program combines pharma-ceutical appetite suppressant medica-tion, fat burning injections and pills, and a clinically proven diet with med-ical doctor and nursing support andcounseling to help their patients reachtheir “target” weight goals.

This physician supervised pro-gram helps those who have beforetried and failed to lose unwantedpounds. Dr. Gail says, “We openedthe clinic because I was enteringmenopause and gaining weight. WhenI asked my primary physician, as wellas my doctor friends, for help, I gotextremely rude responses. I was toldto “push away from the table”.

Dr. Gail does not want her pa-tients to go through the same degrad-ing experience.

At the time, Dr. Gail was livingon chicken and salad, and practicinglevel 3 kickboxing. She says, “I had al-ways been thin, so I also assumed that

supportive staff are therefor you to help you everystep of the way.”

Medical weight lossplans are not new, andmany, are similar, but thoseprograms usually involvesignificant upcharges andhidden fees. Dr.Jachimek’s 269-SLIM pro-gram is different. Her pro-gram is focused on thelong-term results, meaning, not only will the processsafely take off your weightduring the active phase ofthe program, but also pre-vent the pounds from re-turning during the“maintenancephase”...(which is free)!

This is no diet trend –This is looking at yourmedical history, evaluatingyour EKG, bloodwork and lifestyle. Then, their doctors propose a plan foryou, and prescribe appropriate phar-maceutical appetite suppressants, fatburning injections, vitamin therapyand fat burning supplements.

“The program is simple, inex-pensive and easy to follow. We give

you a large list of foods tobuy/choose from,” says Dr.Jachimek. “The program is easy, be-cause it is food bought in the grocerystore, (no special foods to order) justregular meats, fruits and vegetableson our list. This factor also makes itmore affordable, because you don’t

have to buy special foods, or cookseparate dinners if you have a family.”

Under the supervision of theirmedical doctors, patients can drop 20to 30 pounds in the first month. Dr.Jachimek said that it is common to see5-10 pounds dropped in the firstweek. “We have had patients thathave lost 17 pounds in their first week,as well as patients that have lost over ahundred pounds on our program”,says Dr. Jachimek.

Accountability is also a major partof the program. Keeping the patientssafe and on track, nurses evaluate, andtreat them weekly to provide supportand give suggestions on how to main-tain a proper diet.

Dr. Jachimek stresses that thereare no price surprises at MedicalWeight Loss, 269-SLIM. The initialvisit is $195 and weekly visits are just$55. That’s it! This may be what youhave been waiting for.

Pets are so much more than justanimals; they are family! They are al-ways there to provide affection andsupport and love you unconditionally,no matter what. So, when it comes totheir health, as a loving parent, it is upto you to find them a doctor who willtreat them the way you would; provid-ing them with the most compassion-ate, comprehensive care in welcoming, relaxing environment. You will find allthis and more at Plantation AnimalHospital, where doctors RhondaJohnson, DVM, and Ellen Bishai,DVM along with their wonderfulstaff, will care for your furry friendwith knowledge, professionalism andabove all – love! In addition to catsand dogs, Plantation Animal Hospitaltreats the occasional ferret, gerbil, andmany other smaller animals.

At Plantation Animal Hospital thedoctors are extremely knowledgeable

regarding the various facets of veteri-nary medicine and together have manyyears of experience working as Veteri-narians in the Tampa Bay Area. Dr.Johnson and Dr. Bishai are very pas-sionate about what they do and theirlevel of expertise is perfectly comple-mented by their love for animals.Adding to the friendly atmosphere atPlantation Animal Hospital is the ex-ceptional staff, which will assist you inproviding quality, customized care forthe individual needs of you and yourpet(s). Customized care at PlantationAnimal Hospital includes working withthe budget of each client. Vet bills canget expensive and the Doctors under-stand this. You and your family will al-ways be at the forefront of everydecision. No other veterinarian thatI’ve ever came across cares more aboutkeeping costs down for their clients.“Everything is a case by case basis, wealways do what’s best for the pet andowner.” says Dr. Johnson.

Dr. JohnsonGrowing up in California, Dr.

Johnson attended the University ofCalifornia at Davis for her undergrad-uate studies. Later attending IowaState University in 1995, she gradu-ated with honors with a Doctorate ofVeterinary Medicine and a Masters de-gree in Immunology and Microbiol-ogy and was the recipient of manyacademic awards and scholarships. After graduation, Dr. Johnson movedback to her husband’s home state ofFlorida and has lived in the Tampa Bayarea since. She has practiced in St. Pe-tersburg and Tampa for nearly 20years and currently lives in Carroll-wood and loves having a practice soclose to home. Dr. Johnson strives tobe a lifelong learner and loves all as-pects of small animal medicine andsurgery. She is especially interested inchronic ear issues and dental health.

Dr. BishaiRecently joining Plantation Ani-

mal Hospital this past October, Dr.Bishai completed her undergraduatestudies at the University of SouthFlorida, earning her BS in Biology anda minor in music history. Prior to en-rolling in veterinary school, she at-tended the University of Florida, where she completed a doctorate de-

gree in Cellular Microbiology in 2007.Upon graduation, Dr. Bishai decidedto fulfill her lifelong dream and en-rolled in veterinary school, and com-pleted her veterinary degree from theUniversity of Pennsylvania in 2012.Graduating from veterinary school, she returned home to Tampa. Dr.Bishai loves all aspects of veterinarymedicine (but admits she has a softspot for kitties) and is always strivingto learn more and she stays up to dateon the most current therapies. Sheenjoys volunteering for spay andneuter days at local shelters and catrescues whenever she can. In additionto spending time with her own furryfeline friends – Fuzzy Man, Rogue, and Chimera – she also enjoys playingand listening to live music and cur-rently plays the Viola in the Universityof Tampa Orchestra.

“I enjoy working here a lot,”says Dr. Bishai. “Everyone here istruly invested in taking care of theanimals, not just in a medical capac-ity, but in supporting the family.Everyone cares about everyone. Thatmakes a huge difference!”

The doctors and staff truly careabout the wellbeing of their patientsand believe that properly educatingthe pet owners is key to having ahealthy pet. Dr. Johnson says, “Good

which is why they tailor each service toyour pet’s individual needs and workhard with you to develop a uniqueprogram just for them. “Everythingfrom early detection blood work all theway down to how often we recom-mend dentals, is greatly dependant onthe type, breed and lifestyle of thepet,” says Dr. Johnson.

Plantation Animal Hospital offersa wide range of services, includingfull, comprehensive surgical services, diagnostic imaging, cytology, a widerange of dental services (both anes-thetic and non-anesthetic), 1 year and3 year vaccines, boarding (for theirclients only), annual and bi annualwellness programs, microchip place-ment with registration included, andprescription diet plans. They alsocarry a variety of flea and heartwormprevention products and have a fullpharmacy in the clinic, as well as an inhouse laboratory. Plantation AnimalHospital offers cold laser therapy, which very few clinics in the areaoffer. A relatively new technology, cold laser therapy is a noninvasive pro-cedure that uses lasers to stimulate cellregeneration and increase blood circu-lation, which in turn promotes woundhealing and helps to reduce inflamma-tion. It is also used to treat dogs witharthritis and soft tissue injuries.

For all of their surgical proce-dures, the doctors use multistage anes-thesia and insert IV catheters to ensureyour pet is getting all the necessaryfluids. During the procedure your petis monitored closely, and a technicianis always present, whose sole purposeis to monitor blood pressure, EKGtrace, heart rate, temperature and sat-urated oxygen. They also use the BearHugger external warming blanket –the same type of warming system thatis used in human medicine – to ensureyour pet is comfortable the entiretime. As you can see, at Plantation An-imal Hospital your pet is truly treatedas one of the family!

Dr. Johnson says, “There isn’t asingle member of my staff that doesn’ttreat these pets as if they were theirown. Our favorite part about what wedo is working with the animals andhelping them; when we actually seesuccess and say ‘wow, what we didmade a huge difference’.”

Plantation Animal Hospital islocated at 4585 Gunn Hwy. inTampa. Their hours are Mon.,Tues. Thurs. and Fri. 7:30 a.m. – 6p.m.; Wed. and Sat. 8:30 a.m. – 12p.m. For more information pleasecall (813) 968-3393 or visitwww.PlantationPetVet.com.

communication is super important be-cause we are dealing with pets thatcan’t express themselves and it is upto us to figure out what is wrong andhow we can help them. We try reallyhard to educate “parents” to the bestof our ability. We currently give out apuppy/kitty educational package andare working on putting together anew client hand-out folder, so when-ever a new client comes in we can ed-ucate them on what they should doabout heartworms and other illnesses,as well as what we offer, how to selecta good food for your pet and otherimportant things that every pet ownershould know.”

Dr. Bishai stresses the impor-tance of heartworm prevention, innot just dogs but cats as well. She

says, “All of your animals need to beon heartworm prevention in the stateof Florida, even cats.” Heartwormsare spread by contact with mosqui-toes; therefore cats are just as suscep-tible as dogs, especially if you have anoutside cat. She adds “Fleas may beannoying, but heartworms can befatal. It is a lot easier and much lessexpensive to prevent heartwormsthan it is to treat them.” Although, ifyour dog or cat does have a case ofheartworms, the doctors have thenecessary medicine and expertise totackle just about any case and will doall they can to save your pet andbring them back to full health.

At Plantation Animal Hospital thedoctors understand that not everythingis going to be the same for every pet,

Holy Hog Barbecue has quicklybecome a local favorite in the Carroll-wood community since opening theirnewest location in the same plaza asCarrabba's and Pet Supermarket.Owner/operator and lifelong Tamparesident Danny Hernandez says, “Wewant to be known as the hometownsmokehouse of Carrollwood.” IfDanny’s name sounds familiar to you,it’s because he and his family havebeen serving the community some ofthe best Cuban food around since1979 with their restaurant (the origi-nal) Pipos’ Cafe.

Danny has taken his passion forcooking award winning food from the

Cuban kitchen and transferred his tal-ent into the BB-Q world, also winningawards for his unique, one-of-a-kindbarbecue recipes. “Our recipes are oursall the way down to the sauces, ribrubs and butt rubs. We created themand that means our flavor is unique toanything else you’ve tried,” says Oper-ations Manager Matt Strickland.

The unique flavor is absolutelydelicious, from their mouth wateringmeats, which are smoked in the pit-master’s smoker, all the way to theiryummy sides. Many restaurants skimpon their sides in terms of flavor, butyou wont find any of that at HolyHog! Their sides are highly decoratedand well thought out. In fact, thejalapeño mac n’ cheese has won the

Mayor’s ‘Mac n’ Cheese Throwdownfor the past 2 years! I’ve personallybought this side in bulk for my officeas a special treat. The pan size thatnormally feeds 25 people was de-voured in full by 15 people in aboutan hour if that gives you any indica-tion of how amazing this stuff is. It’ssmothered in cheese and has just theright amount of spicy kick to really setoff the full flavor.

In addition to their famousjalapeño mac n’ cheese, the menu isfilled with a huge variety of otherhomemade sides, including fresh, never frozen, collard greens, and otherdelectable favorites such as cowboybaked beans, corn fritters, homemade

mashed potatoes, black eyed peas andfried okra to name a few.

MEATS FROM THESMOKER

Holy Hog offers a fabulous selec-tion of seasonal menus - the holidayversion is set to release right aroundthe time you’re reading this article. The pulled pork was the first thing Itried on my first-ever visit to HolyHog almost a year ago and it’s been aconstant craving for me ever since. The sandwich is piled high enough toput you in a relaxed state of “foodcoma”, so the only problem youmight have with this sandwich is figur-ing out if you want to go back to work

or take a nap. On my next visit I tried the

smoked chicken, and being a south-ern boy myself, I know the differencebetween a good smoked chicken andthe dry tasteless meat all too manyrestaurants end up serving instead.Holy Hog’s smoked chicken is ab-solute perfection, from the crispyouter skin to the juicy meat, all theway through to the bones. Drizzle onsome of their famous BBQ sauce andit’s the perfect smoked chicken that issure to satisfy your craving for deli-cious food!

The Texas style brisket is an-other excellent choice from their ex-

tensive menu and is very popularamongst Holy Hog customers. Brisketisn’t something that can be takenlightly either - when it comes tobrisket I tend to be very critical andonly expect the best; Holy Hog is yetto disappoint. I have tried their brisketmany times, and out of everything onthe menu, this is my favorite! If youhave never been to Holy Hog before, this is my recommendation for you, asI can assure you that you'll take onebite and fall in love.

Tender, juicy and delicious, ifyou’re in the mood for a sweet meat, the burnt ends are for you. Dubbed‘BBQ candy’ by the pitmasters them-

selves, nothing beats this meat interms of sweet, tangy flavor! Theburnt ends sandwich is something mywife has to get at least once a month -and this is someone who eats obses-sively healthy on a daily basis.

Saving one of the best for last, theSt. Louis Ribs are fall off the bonefantastic! These St.Louis (meaty) styleribs are mouth watering with any of allthree of their sauces - sweet, spicy andmustard-based. But if you're like I am,I don't use sauce on these smokeyribs, the flavor alone is spot on and thedry rub that they are cooked/smokedwith is all they need, in my opinion.

CATERINGIn addition to their location in

Carrollwood, Holy Hog has three

other locations in theBay area, as well as afood truck, and twounits inside AmalieArena. (The Down-town location justunveiled their South-ern Kitchen Break-fast.) So no matterwhere your nextevent takes place, there’s a convenientlocation within driv-

ing distance that can provide catering- a sure way to make a memorableimpression on your guests. Givethem a call and have them cater yournext work or family function. Youand your guests will be in for a realtreat. Remember, if you want to addsome Cuban or American food tothat order, it’s an easy addition. Theywill customize your order to whatever it is you need because it is allabout the customer.

wife Loann. “A place where peoplecan get healthy options and uniquefood at a great price. We want tothank our customers for their supportover the past year and for so graciouslywelcoming us into their community.”

Using fresh, all-natural ingredi-ents, Simply Pho’s menu is an excel-lent representation of Vietnamesecuisine, offering flavorful dishes thatnot only taste great, but are good foryou as well. Healthy is a word thatcame up numerous times throughoutmy interview with Loann. She says,“Vietnamese food is in itself veryhealthy. From the herbs and spices tothe fresh ingredients, our menu givesyou many different healthy options tochoose from.”

As their name indicates, Pho istheir specialty. A Vietnamese delicacy,Pho is a staple in the Vietnamese dietand is loaded with nutrients and min-erals that come from the beef-basedbroth. “Pho is a main meal in Viet-nam; many eat it daily - some even eatit three times a day, seven days aweek,” says Loann. The broth is madeout of beef stock, that is simmered for25 hours. This allows it to absorb allthe proteins, minerals and nutrientsfrom the beef. Then we add noodlesand your choice of protein, such aschicken, beef or seafood, with the op-tion to upgrade to filet mignon orKobe beef. For those who are vegetar-ians, we also offer a vegetable-basedbroth and you can add other vegeta-bles to your Pho.”

Loann says, “A lot of times whennew customers come and read themenu description about Pho, theydon’t really know that it’s actually afull meal. Even though it’s a noodlesoup, it’s a big portion. Most new cus-tomers are surprised when the bowlcomes out and they realize how much

food there is.” Seeing as how this is their spe-

cialty, there was no way I was leavingwithout first trying some of their Pho.Loann recommended the beef Pho.Loann was right - the portion size washuge! Loaded with rice noodles, andtender, juicy beef, and served in a fla-vorful, yummy broth, from the firstbite I was hooked!

Served alongside the Pho is a va-riety of herbs and vegetables, includ-ing basil, bean sprouts and jalapeños,depending on the flavors you want toadd. Sitting down with me, Loannguided me on the proper way to eatPho. She says, “What I tell my cus-tomers, is to always try the broth firstto make sure it is to your liking. EveryVietnamese restaurant has their ownway of creating the broth. If you wantit sweeter, add Hoisin sauce; if youwant it spicier add Sriracha. Thosetwo main sauces always go with Pho.If our both is to your liking leave itthe way it is.”

In my case the broth was perfect- no need to change a thing!

Loann continued, “Next you stirup the broth to mix the noodles andprotein and add whatever herbs andvegetables you want; I usually squeezea little lime in there as well.”

Taking her advice, I added somebean sprouts and basil and squeezed alittle lime into it. The result was amaz-ing! A lot of times when you havehealthy food, you sacrifice flavor andtaste, this is not the case with theirPho! For as healthy as it is, the flavorwas incredible!

Feeling a little sick or under theweather? Pho is the perfect remedy!

“Because of all the minerals andnutrients, there are many health bene-fits from eating Pho,” says Loann. “Itcan help to get rid of headaches, andhelps to boost the immune system anddigestive system, as well as aiding inthe regulation of the body. On the

weekends many of our customers willcome in here after a night out to helpthem feel better.”
