Did you know that in the shorttime such as a week, approximately200 people will have been diagnosedwith MS? MS attacks the central nerv-ous system - that is the brain and thespinal cord; or more simply, the coreof all body functions. MS is chronicand is a progressive disease. It is a dis-ease that affects all members in a fam-ily because of the spillover effect.

There are disease-modifying treat-ments available, but there is no cure. However there are more promisingtherapies in development right nowthan at any other time in history.

Tremendous progress is beingmade and the ultimate goal is to findtreatments that not only modify thedisease, but also helps stop it in itstracks.

The Walk MS fundraising sup-ports research that will result in thenext generation of treatments. In2012 alone, the National Society in-vested $43 million to support 350 re-search projects around the world, while providing programs and servicesthat assist more than 1 million people.Members in our area obtain supportand services through the Mid FloridaMS Chapter located in Tampa andMaitland, FL.

We are asking you to supportthe efforts of the Society and theMS Walk, April 26th at the LowryPark Zoo.

The second fundraiser is also inApril - April 12 and 13. This is BikeMS: The Citrus Tour. It is a 150 milecycling, two-day event. The eventstarts at Bok Towers (Lake Wales) andthe participants cycle to Orlando. Thenext day they cycle back to Bok Tow-ers. It is a fun event with dinner forthe cyclists and two days of cycling. This event is also very large and usu-ally draws 900+ riders. The moneythat the National MS Society raisesalso goes to the double-prongedgoals, research to find a cure for MS aswell as programs to educate and assistindividuals with this chronic disease.

The NMSS has one of the lowestadministrative cost programs in thecountry - millions of dollars go to re-search into this disease as well as sup-port too individual needs. Themid-Florida Chapter of the NMSS en-compasses Hillsborough, Pasco, Pinel-las, plus 20 more counties.

concerns and questions they may have, the staff is able to professionally rec-ommend the best products, acces-sories, apparel and shoes. “We canrelate to runners, because we are allrunners ourselves,” adds Bill. “Wehave all run in many of the differentshoes we sell so we understand the dif-ferences between them.”

Running Center carries women’ssizes 5 – 13 and men’s sizes 8 – 15and also offers a variety of differentwidth options. “We offer a better se-lection of accommodative inserts thanany where else in Tampa Bay,” saysBill. “And, with my experience as aPedorthist, I am able to custom fit in-serts to any shoe.”

Whether you run, walk, or jogone thing is certain – the proper shoescan make all the difference in theworld and can be the determining fac-tor between winning a race and suffer-ing an injury.

Some people overpronate, whereyour foot rolls in too far, while others

supinate and their feet roll out too far.Such problems might seem minor atthe time, but without proper footwear, these minor issues can become more se-rious and cause more pain and prob-lems in the future. By using their videogait analysis system, the staff at RunningCenter is able to help athletes and run-ners run more effectively by examiningtheir gait and identifying their runningstyle. This gives them the most accuratefeedback as to your tendencies whileyou run, allowing them to expertly rec-ommend and fit the proper running

Getting To Know Dr. Rhonda Johnsonand Plantation Animal Hospital

I am Dr. Rhonda Johnson and Ihave owned and operated PlantationAnimal Hospital for over three years. This animal hospital has been in thesame location for over 28 years.Since October, 2010, when I pur-chased the practice, we have grownby 300%. Most of our growth hasbeen through word of mouth. Ourclients have been great to refer fam-ily, neighbors and friends. It is hardto believe that after eighteen and ahalf years I finally accomplished mygoal of owning my own practice.

I did not choose veterinary med-icine: it chose me and I am very gladthat it did. In 1990, I married myhusband and the military took usfrom California to Iowa. I was un-able to use my science teaching cre-dential in the Iowa public schoolsystem. I had attended UC Davis formy undergraduate degree andthought about veterinary medicine asa career, but at that time it was notfinancially possible to get the volun-teer experience needed and pay thetuition. I guess it was meant to be

though because the military sta-tioned us in Ames, Iowa, with a vet-erinary school at Iowa StateUniversity. I started the applicationprocess and was accepted. I lovedvet school.

In 1995, I graduated and wemoved back to Florida where myhusband had grown up. I took aposition as an associate veterinarianin St. Petersburg. I spent ten yearsworking in St. Petersburg thenmoved to Tampa. In Tampa I haveworked at CountryChase Veterinaryand Bayshore Animal Clinic. In2006, I began to look for a practiceto buy. I approached Dr. McCamp-bell, the owner of Plantation Ani-mal Hospital, which was only a fewmiles from my home. He said hewould think about selling. In2010, I received a call from, Dr.McCampbell, who was ready to selland needed to move quickly. Hehad taken another job.

The rest is a bit of a blur. I notonly purchased the practice but in-herited a great staff. We started with

three employees and now have ten. Ihave hired through family of employ-ees and recommendations from staffand friends. I have a great group ofpeople to work with and help yourpets. We added a third exam room, anew reception desk, in-house bloodanalyzers and a new phone and com-puter system. We have a new dentalmachine, anesthesia machine andnew patient warming and monitoringequipment. In October of 2013, wewere lucky enough to add a secondfull time experienced veterinarian toour staff. Dr. Ellen Bishai is well ed-ucated, with a PhD and a DVM, andshe is a great communicator. She hasbeen a fantastic addition.

The entire group of team mem-bers at Plantation Animal Hospitalbelieves in providing the most up todate and caring services for yourfurry family members. We only pre-scribe the best new drugs and treat-ments and only recommend what isneeded to keep your pet healthy. Wehave discounted Early DetectionPlans and offer full service medicine

and routine surgery. I have six petsat home and four cats that currentlylive free roaming at the clinic. It isour promise that we will always treatyour pet like our own. We wouldlove to meet you and your family.

Longtime Carrollwood Resident Publishes His First NovelMichael Shahnasarian, Ph.D., a

longtime business owner and residentof Carrollwood, has recently releasedhis first novel, Justice Indicted. Aftercompleting a doctorate in counselingpsychology at Florida State University,Dr. Shahnasarian founded CareerConsultants of America, Inc. (CCA) inCarrollwood. CCA has specialized incareer development, human resourcesconsultation, life care planning, andvocational rehabilitation since its in-ception in 1986. From his researchand vast experiences over the years, hehas authored eleven nonfiction books, and seventy articles, book chapters, and monographs. Dr. Shahnasarianhas also developed a standardized testused by vocational experts worldwideto facilitate evaluation of a person’searning capacity through systematicanalysis and appraisal.

Justice Indicted, Dr. Shahnasar-ian’s first work of fiction, is a thriller inwhich he uses his knowledge and legalsystem experience to create a storythat is at once educational and quiteentertaining. Over the past 30 years,he has committed a considerable por-tion of his practice to work as a foren-sic expert witness on vocational and

life-care-plan issues for both the prose-cution and defense. Dr. Shahnasarianhas performed expert witness work lo-cally, statewide, nationally and interna-tionally. He is well known in the legalcommunity here in Tampa andthroughout Florida, and he has testi-fied in countless trials over the years. He derived his inside knowledge towrite Justice Indicted from his morethan two-and-a-half decades of experi-ence as a forensic witness.

Justice Indicted is a fictional takeon civil litigation in the Florida. It de-picts a war hero, who, soon after hisdischarge from MacDill Air ForceBase, is in a vehicular accident thatclaims the life of his wife and leaveshim severely injured and a single par-ent of a 4-year-old girl. While he aims

to be fairly compensated for his lossesand to move-on with his life, greedybusiness executives and self-servinglawyers have a different agenda, andpursuing litigation is the war hero’sonly recourse. The story takes placeprimarily in Carrollwood and SouthTampa, in addition to other familiarareas throughout the Tampa Bay area.As the story develops, readers are ex-

posed to behind-the-scenes events thatare common to the litigation process, but not generally known to the public.

When asked his purpose in writ-ing Justice Indicted, Dr. Shahnasariansays his objective was to provide anentertaining story through which hecould educate the public on common-place happenings that occur during lit-igation, many of which appear to bethe opposite of promoting justice.Having performed an average of be-tween 100 and 150 expert evaluationsannually, provided approximately 50depositions per year, and testified inup to 20 trials each year, Dr. Shah-nasarian has gained an appreciationand understanding of the inner work-ings of the Florida justice system, giv-ing him a unique perspective into itsprocesses and shortcomings.

Dr. Shahnasarian lives in Carroll-wood with his wife Jean and theirthree West Highland terriers, and theyhave three adult children. Justice In-dicted can be purchased atAmazon.com, Barnes and Noble, andOvermountain Press, the book’s pub-lisher. Many of his nonfiction bookscan be purchased at Amazon.com andBarnes & Noble.

Palm Yoga A modern day symbol of peace,

tranquility and wellbeing, the ancientpractice of yoga has the ability to en-hance your life mentally, physically andspiritually. “Yoga is my passion,” saysRebecca Wood, owner of Palm Yoga.“I love yoga, and how it has this re-markable ability to transform peoples’lives in whatever areas they are lookingto make changes.”

Rebecca is so much more than ayoga instructor; she is a teacher whoprepares her students for life andguides them on the path to living asuccessful, peaceful existence. Shesays, “Yoga is not meant to be just anexercise, it is about preparing yourbody for bigger and better things. There are so many more health bene-fits than just the exercise itself. Yogahelps increase your health and stam-ina, prevents injury, keeps your jointshealthy, can reduce stress, decreaseanxiety and depression and overallmake you a happier person. Our ap-proach to yoga is that it creates healthfrom the inside out. It detoxifies thebody, makes organs function better, increases circulation and buildsstrength and flexibility in muscles. Inaddition, our classes teach studentshow to breathe properly. I can’t thinkof one aspect of yoga that doesn’tbenefit your health.”

As a yogi myself, I am a true be-liever in the power of yoga, and sincebeginning my practice over a year agoyoga has helped me in so many differ-ent aspects of my life; it has helped merealize a greater sense of self and hasgiven me more self confidence.

On our previous visit Mike sug-gested we try their Lobster Risottostuffed Sea bass topped with MangoChutney, and all I can say is WOW!“We have some of the best Sea Bass youwill ever have,” adds Mike. The deli-ciously buttery flavor of the sea basscombined with the creamy risotto fill-

selections that both land-lovers and sea-lovers can enjoy. “From delicious burg-ers to the freshest seafood in town, wehave it all; and no matter what youorder it’s going to be great,” says Gen-eral Manager and Head Chef MikeHayes. Infusing his New Orleans styleof cooking into many of the menuitems, Chef Mike puts a spin on someof your classic favorites to create selec-tions that have a completely new styleand flare.

Providing guests with a unique din-ing atmosphere, at Ballyhoo Grill inTampa, you choose the experience youwant to get – whether you unwind ontheir beautiful outdoor patio underneaththe shade of their tiki huts, enjoy a ro-mantic dinner in their intimate privatedining room, or have a little fun at theirbar as you sip on one of their signaturecocktails. Ballyhoo has a full-liquor bar, complete with daily specials, and brags ofsome of the best sangria in town. Fromupscale entrees to casual lunches, thisrestaurant has it all! Mike says, “Weoffer guests fine dining in a casual at-mosphere at a very reasonable price.”

My husband and I are huge fishingfanatics, and as such, a yearly trip to theKeys is always marked on our calendar. Thus, we are very familiar with the Keysway of life. From the moment wewalked through their doors, we wereimpressed with how well Ballyhoos em-bodied the Keys vision, and walking upthe front porch we felt as if we had justcome off of Duval street in Key West;all that was missing from this Keys-likeexperience was the ocean itself.

After taking a peak at the com-pletely revamped menu we were evenmore impressed with what they had tooffer. Featuring soups such as their fa-mous She Crab Soup and New OrleansGumbo to Shrimp and Oystyer PoBoys, Prime Rib Phillies and PulledPork Sandwiches; they also have a deli-

cious selection of flatbreads, tacos andburgers. For the veggie lovers outthere, they have a great selection of sal-ads, such as their Soy Glazed TunaChop Chop Salad, Salmon Ceasar Saladand Seafood Cobb Salad. But that isnot all!

Making up the other portion of themenu are pasta choices, such as theirSeafood Pescatore and Lobster Mac andCheese, entrees such as Filet Mignon, St.Louis Ribs and Chicken Piccatta, and ofcourse, last but certainly not least – theirseafood!
