NICE recommend that /e o5er patients a choice of anticoagulation& including/arfarin and the novel oral anticoagulants noacs!. 8here are complicatedrules surrounding /hich N4AC is licensed for /hich ris6 factor these can -e
found in the NICE guidelines. Aspirin is no longer recommended for reducingstro6e ris6 in patients /ith A;
$octors have al/ays thought carefully a-out the ris6-ene9t pro9le ofstarting someone on /arfarin. A history of falls& old age& alcohol e%cess and ahistory of previous -leeding are common things that ma6e us consider/hether /arfarinisation is in the -est interests of the patient. NICE no/recommend /e formalise this ris6 assessment using the =AS?E$ scoringsystem.
8here are no formal rules on ho/ /e act on the =AS?E$ score although a
