QUOTATION MARKS and APOSTROPHES

RULES:

Place quotation marks around the exact words someone has said.“How was school today?” she asked.

When the quotation mark is at the end of a sentence, the period goes inside the quotation mark.“He laughed as he said, “I like you.”

Question marks and exclamation points go inside the quotation marks if they are part of the quotation.“What is the date?” she asked. Why did you say, “I failed the test”?

When a sentence continues after a quotation, place a comma, question mark, or exclamation point inside the quotation mark. Do not use more than one.“This is the best show ever!” Dan screamed during the concert.

Use quotation marks for the titles of poems, songs, stories, chapters in a book,

and magazine articles. We sang the song “Beautiful Day” in chorus.

A contraction is a way of combining two words into one. An apostrophe in a contraction replaces the missing letter(s) of the second word.

Carlos’s mom

ADJECTIVES AND ADVERBS

RULES:

Adjectives and adverbs are two types of modifiers. The job of a modifier is to describe.

Adjectives describe nouns and some pronouns. The beautiful girl was crying. Her friend was very skinny.

Adverbs describe verbs, adjectives and other adverbs. He loudly banged the drum.

They stood side-by-side waiting for the doors to open. Adjectives can come after the noun or pronoun they modify. A predicate

adjective comes after the verb and tells us something about the subject of a sentence.Grace was upset about her science grade. The chicken tasted bland.

Phrases and clauses can also act as modifiers. Her grandmother returned to Puerto Rico and saw her family.John, who is more than six feet tall, plays basketball.

Some adjectives are used to compare people, places, things, ideas, or actions. A comparative modifier compares only two things.

Julie’s handwriting is neater than mine. A superlative modifier compares three or more things.

Danny is the fastest runner in our school. Not all comparatives and superlatives are made by adding –er and –est. In

some cases, use more and most, or less and least to create the comparative and superlative.

Some modifiers don’t follow the rules. For example:bad/ worse/ worstgood/ better/ bestlittle/ less/ leastmuch/ more/ most

Learn to choose the appropriate interjection to complete a sentence. An interjection is a word or phrase used to express strong feelings such as love, fear, anger, surprise, happiness or disgust. An interjection is usually followed by an exclamation point.Help me!

preposition, and all the words in between. Some common prepositions include: about, above, across, after, against,

PRONOUNS RULES: A pronoun is a word that takes the place of a noun.

A pronoun must agree in gender and in number with the noun it stands for.GENDER: male or femaleMasculine: he, him, hisFeminine: she, her, hersNUMBER: one or more than oneSingular: I, me, him, her, itsPlural: we, us, they, them

To choose the correct pronoun, figure out how it will be used in a sentence.Personal Pronouns:

1. I, me, my, mine, myself2. You, your, yours, yourself, yourselves3. She, her, hers, herself4. He, him, his, himself5. It, its, itself6. We, us, our, ours, ourselves7. They, them, their, theirs, themselves

There are three cases of pronouns:1. Subjective case: The pronoun stands for the subject of the sentence.

(he, I, it, she, they, we, who, whoever)Samantha and I missed the show.

2. Objective case: The pronoun stands for the object of the sentence. The object receives the action of the verb. (her, him, it, me, them, us, whom, whomever)My father drove us to the mall.

3. Possessive case: The pronoun shows possession. (her/hers, his, its, my/mine, our/ours, their/theirs, whose)The dog found his bone.

Indefinite pronouns take singular verbs- some of the time. Indefinite pronouns do not name the noun they stand for. Most of the time, when an indefinite pronoun is the subject of a sentence, it is followed by a singular verb.Everything is fine.Someone has a new dress. However, certain indefinite pronouns such as all, any, most, some, none, can be either singular or plural, so they make take either a singular or a plural verb. If the noun following the indefinite pronoun is singular, use a single verb. Most of the girls are going to the movies.

Page 20: CAPITALIZATION - Amazon Web Services · Web viewConjunctions Types of Sentences Sentences and Punctuation Commas Double Negatives CAPITALIZATION RULES: Always capitalize the pronoun

If the noun following the indefinite pronoun is singular, use a singular verb. Most of the body is made of water.

It is important to make clear which nouns your pronouns are replacing. The noun your pronoun replaces is the pronoun’s antecedent. Make sure your pronoun’s antecedent is clearly stated.Avoid broad pronoun references.Avoid using an indefinite you, they or it.Watch for pronouns that seem to refer to more than one antecedent.Place the pronouns close enough to the antecedent to make your meaning clear.

It is important to use the correct form of the words “their”, “there” and “they’re”.“Their” is the possessive form of “them.”“There” is a place.“They’re” is a contraction of “they are.”

VERBS

RULES:

Verbs are action words that tell what someone or something does or is.The basic verb tenses are past, present and future. If an event is happening now, use the present tense of the verb. She walks out the door.If an event has already happened, use the past tense of the verb. The fireworks exploded in the air. They stopped by our house after school.I took my phone to school. If an event has not happened yet, use the future tense.Eventually, computers will talk.

When you use a singular subject, use the singular form of the verb that goes with it. To make the verb singular, you usually add an “s” to the end of it.She plays with her brother.

When you use two or more subjects, use the plural form of the verb that goes with them. The girls play with their brother.

The word “you” is an exception to this rule. “You” can be singular or plural but always use a plural verb with it.You play with your brother too.

Some verbs such as am, has, and was change form when they are plural.I am fine. They are fine.

The perfect tense makes more exact statements about time than the simple tense.I have seen three red cars go by.She has passed her test this time.We have switched classes. The present perfect tense is formed by using the helping verb has or have and the past participle or –ed form of the verb. The past perfect tense shows which of two events happened first. It is formed by the helping verb had and the past participle of a verb. She had stated her unhappiness before we actually discussed it.The future perfect tense expresses the idea that one thing will occur before another in the future. It is formed by using the helping verbs will have or going to have and the past participle of a verb.By tomorrow, I will have a new car.By next June, she is going to have graduated.

Page 22: CAPITALIZATION - Amazon Web Services · Web viewConjunctions Types of Sentences Sentences and Punctuation Commas Double Negatives CAPITALIZATION RULES: Always capitalize the pronoun

Irregular verbs form perfect tenses by using a helping verb and a past participle.Perfect tenses are made up of a helping verb and a past participle.

In a sentence, the subject and verb must agree in number. Gina was going to school.Gina and Matthew were going to school. However, when the subjects joined together by the word and refer to one person, place or thing, use a singular verb.Bacon and eggs is my favorite meal.

When a compound subject is joined by the words or or nor, the verb must agree to the subject closest to it.Either Jen or her sister, Sally, is a college graduate.

Use the correct tense of the word “to”.“To” shows movement toward someone or something.“Too” means also.“Two” is the number 2.

Connect complete thoughts with semicolons.Join two parts of a sentence with a semicolon when each part can stand alone as a complete sentence. Do not use a semicolon with and, but, yet, or, for, and so.Our class went on a trip to Alaska; we had an incredible week.A semicolon is a weaker “stop” than a period but a stronger “pause” than a comma. When you use a semicolon to connect two sentences, you are saying that the sentences relate to each other in some way.The baby really enjoys juice; she just drank two bottles.

Use a colon after the greeting in a business letter, to show time, or to introduce a list.Dear Mr. Smith:9:00We bought three things at the store: apples, oranges and kiwis.
