When we are children we are asked that question by well meaning adults looking for a conversation starter. The expected answers usually range from broad vocational headings: doctor, lawyer, police officer, firefighter, mommy, pilot, musician, dancer, designer, teacher, and the occasional sanitation engineer. But early on in our psyche it is imprinted that we need to have a goal, a dream, a direction if we are to move ahead and mature into adulthood. As motivational speaker Zig Ziglar phrased it, “If you aim at nothing, you’ll hit it every time.” The beginning of a new year seems like a good time to assess where we are and decide what we want to be as we mature as a family of faith, the Body of Christ, called to this particular setting at this particular time. The Church, our church, is a living, complex organism that continues to grow and transform over time and if we intend to fulfill our mission we need to decide upon a course of action. As children we may have wanted to be a great many things but over time and through a process of refinement we hopefully discovered what we were gifted to be and set our course accordingly. In high school I remember wanting to be a marine biologist and I had a great knack for life sciences but only average math acuity so ultimately a career in the science field would have been a struggle at best. Instead, over time, I found my niche in religious education and the rest became history and continues to unfold as future. Just as each of us have individual strengths and abilities as a church body we posses collectively the aptitudes and gifts for particular ministries and pursuits. Every success and failure thus far has led us to this point and as a living body we have adapted and changed and transformed into who we are today, poised to take hold of future with gusto and imagination. I am confident that our future lies in how we make connections and build relationships with our community and with the communities that lie beyond our borders. Our aim is where we come in contact with our neighbors, our co-workers, our friends, and those who are relegated to the margins of our society. Deep within us, as a congregation and as the individuals that comprise this Body of Christ we have good news that needs to be shared, fine gifts of music, laughter and love, courage through prayer and reflection, a sense of comfort and healing, gestures of kindness and welcome, inspiring acts of generosity. Parents Day-OutParents Day-Out was a huge success. The children started the afternoon with Leslie Berger singing carols,

thank you Leslie for helping out with all the kids. Pizza was delivered, movies were playing, ping-pong, foosball, puzzles, coloring, and games, were enjoyed by all. Even running up and down the fellowship hall was fun and allof this was done with smiles and laughter.

We finished the day with making an Advent Calendar for all of them to take home. Thank you to all thevolunteers that made Parents Day-Out possible. Children’s Ministry will be hosting two more Parents Nights-Outand one more Parents Day-Out in 2015, watch for the those dates to come.

CHILDREN’S MINISTRIES

(Lissa’s pondering continued from page 1)The Apostle Paul reminds us in Ephesians that Christ is at work in us every moment equipping us for

works of service and building us up as mature disciples and missionaries: “So Christ himself gave the apostles, the proph-ets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers, to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up until weall reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness ofChrist…speaking the truth in love, we will grow to become in every respect the mature body of him who is the head, that is, Christ. From him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does itswork.” (Eph. 4:11 ff)

Our destiny is waiting for us in the streets of our community, in the classrooms of our children, in the boardrooms of our work, in the pantries that help the homeless, in the hotel rooms of the working poor, in the sheltersand the prisons and the graveside of those who mourn. We may stumble and fall when we take the Gospel out tothe people we have contact with each day, we might feel awkward and out of place but in time we will experiencethe fruits of our labors. But, as the New Year unfolds we are encouraged to “Start where you are. Use what youhave. Do what you can.” (Arthur Ashe). May God continue to bless our efforts into 2015. Happy New Year!

YOUTH MINISTRIES

We were thrilled to have the opportunity to host a Gratitude Breakfast inNovember to express how thankful we are for the support of the wholecongregation! Our middle schooler’s prepare breakfast each Sunday morning as partof their Sunday school program and they decided they wanted to prepare a meal andhost the whole congregation for that meal.

Our team of volunteers worked for weeks to prepare decorations, gather theingredients for the food, recruit chefs, and invite the congregation to the meal. Aspecial thank you to Kerilyn Counter for coordinating the event. It was Kerilyn's ideato express our gratitude to the congregation in this way, and her vision for the eventwas fulfilled thanks to the hard work and support of Elder Mary Byrne, Cathy Dyla, and all of our middle schooland senior high students who were up early on a Sunday morning to flip pancakes and fry bacon.

Thank you to all who attended our Gratitude Breakfast for the continued love and support! CHPC Youthappreciates you!

OUTREACHThank you from Outreach

As I am “retiring” from the office of Elder for Outreach and Membership, I wouldjust like to thank all of you for supporting our efforts these past three years. A special bigthank you to those who brought cookies and snacks for the Connect table – it has beennice to have such a great variety of yummy homemade, bakery and Costco items! (All ofwhich were happily consumed!) The donations left in our little basket have also paid forthe lemonade supplies and the flavored creamers for your coffee. We like to think thatthese little extras provide a nice and welcoming atmosphere as people come for worship. Many thanks to those who left a few dollars there as well.

Special thanks to those who take the tablecloths home each week to launder thecoffee stains out! This is one of those quiet, behind-the-scenes gifts of love and service that is so appreciated andnecessary in the life of a church. If you’d like to help out next year with any of these little areas of service, pleaselet me know!

I hope you have enjoyed the car show and the concerts that we have held at CHPC. These are intended togive you opportunities to bring friends and neighbors to the church as well as to give a fun event for our members. We hope to host more of this type of event in the future.

We have several new members who have come to us this past year. I hope you have had a chance to meetthem – they are a bunch of delightful people! A couple of them are already stepping up to serve as deacons in ourchurch, and several are now in the choir!

Lastly, I hope you are enjoying our new website. It has been re-designed to be more current anduser-friendly. It only works, though, if you go on it to see all that’s happening in the life of our wonderful church. If you have questions about how to navigate it, please let us know so that we can help you.

It has been my pleasure to serve this church as an Elder for the last few years. I hope you will continue tosupport Tammy Grant and the rest of the Outreach Committee as we move in to another exciting year for CHPC!Sincerely, Jana Kidd

Women’s Book Group:“When Jane Forrester takes a position as a social worker in North Carolina, she is given the task of

deciding which of her clients should be sterilized without their knowledge or consent.” Based in truth, this story,Necessary Lies, by Diane Chamberlain, is about the courage it takes to be who you’re supposed to be whensociety’s messages tell you otherwise. (Yes, from 1933 until 1973, state action in North Carolina led to thesterilization by choice or coercion of over 7,600 people.)

Please join the Women’s Book Group on Tuesday, January 27, as we discuss the struggles andemotions presented by this meaningful novel. We will meet at the home of Mary Douglas at 7:00 p.m. Pleasecontact Mary Douglas for more information. (714-281-1472.)
