    ABILITY CAMPSSPECIAL NEEDS PROGRAMMING

Ability Camp at Central Bucks Family YMCA is a “camp within

a camp” designed for campers who, in order to be safe andsuccessful, require smaller ratios than what you may nd in araditional summer camp environment.

For the majority of the day, campers participate side by sidewith their typical peers in activities like arts & crafts, sports& games, and swimming. For one period each day, campersocus on social skills, individual goals, or may choose to “take

    a break.”

There will be swimming instruction and recreational swimunder the direction of YMCA trained swim instructors andAmerican Red Cross lifeguards.

To be most successful in this camp, it is the expectation thatcampers are mainstreamed without support for at least partof the day in their school environment while designed forall disabilities; the camper must be independent in toiletingand feeding. Parent input and involvement in planning andmanaging behaviors is also expected. Prior to enrollment inAbility Camp at the Y, parents and campers must meet withcamp directors to establish relationships, and discuss thecampers’ needs and goals for the summer. An IEP must besubmitted prior to the start of camp.
