The Camden area, a vibrant and caringcommunity nestled in the pine-covered hills on thebluffs overlooking the Ouachita (Wash-I-taw)River, is truly a diamond in the rough. Almost14,000 people reside in Camden (the county seat)and approximately 32,000 live in Ouachita County. The country covers an area of over 700 square miles.
The streets of Camden are lined withantebellum homes and historic landmarks that onlyscratch the surface of a rugged heritage enriched byIndian folklore and the glories and heartbreaks ofthe Civil War. But the soul of the area’s historiclegacy lies not on its heroic mystique but ado-or-die pioneer work ethic that has put thiscommunity on the industrial map.
The land itself, quilted with hardwoods andpine, is a natural habitat for an abundance of wildlife. The river, lakes, and streams that stitch theland together are filled with bass, crappie, catfish, and bream.
Camden is a community whose heart isrooted not only in the richness of its past or thepromise of its future, but also in its peoplethemselves. With over 20 active civic groups andan abundance of volunteers, Camden has provento be a community where its citizens get involved.
Welcome to our community, where a historicpast, a progressive present, and a promising futurecharacterize the Camden area.

Thanks to caring citizens, much of Camden’shistory has been preserved and many of theAntebellum homes restored. Visitors don’twant to miss our Historic Downtown District,as well as the Historic Clifton-Greening Street
District, the Washington Street Historic District, therestored Missouri Pacific Depot, the many Civil Warlandmarks, and the more than 20 historic houses listed onthe National Register of Historic Places. One of thesehomes is open as a bed and breakfast lodge while theMcCollum-Chidester House serves as a museum withhistory dating back as far as 1847.
Camdenactually wasborn in 1824as a steamboatlanding wherecotton wasloaded andshipped toNew Orleans. In fact, the
Bluff, as it was known, was one of the leadingcotton-shipping terminals and became the site of a cottongin in 1841, launching Camden’s industrial history.
The McCollum-Chidester House was a place wherestagecoach drivers and traveling visitors found rest, refreshment and gracious hospitality in the days before theCivil War. The house is practically unchanged, as visitorscan view original furnishings, mementos and bullet holesin the upstairs walls.
The town certainly has seen a fair share of famousindividuals passing through its history. Nineteenthcentury writer Edgar Allen Poe worked as a printer forthe local newspaper, The Herald, in 1845. More recently, parts of John Jakes‚ “The North and the South”made-for-television mini-series, were filmed at theMcCollum-Chidester House. Kirstie Alley and PatrickSwayze were two favorites of the locals. Camdenites wereextras in the scenes filmed here. Martin Scorcese directedhis first movie, Box Car Bertha, featuring Barbara Hersheyand David Carradine in Camden as well.
