Oh herro there hoomans! My name is Furby (and yes, I am furry!). I am a young and energetic boy looking for my new experienced furever home to spend my days exercising, loving, and of course learning! I still need to work on my sharing skills and my manners, so I would prefer an older crew to spend my time with. You know what takes some getting used to? Leashes! What are those crazy things anyways? I am hoping you can help shed some light on how I can use one as right now they are so confusing. Other dogs in the home may be cool, but let’s make sure we meet rst so we can make sure we get along. Also... I am ashamed to admit this but I like small critters. A LOT. I may chase them and try to play with them, so let’s keep it a pooch and people house only please! I am super duper excited to attend 'Polite Pooches' with you, it will really help me with all that learning I still have to do. If I sound like the right pooch for you, please come meet me soon! I can't wait! Ru!

Dear Working Wise:Can the owner of the self-serve gas station where I work make me pay for customers who drive away without paying for their gas? I only make a little more than minimum wage and I don’t think this is fair. Signed Cashless Cashier
Dear Working Wise:
Working WiseWorking WiseWorking Wise
Do you have a work-related question? Send your questions to Working Wise, at [email protected]. Charles Strachey is a manager with Alberta Human Services. This column is provided for general informa-tion.
Dear Cashless:
No, your employer is not allowed to make you pay for losses due to customer theft. Alberta’s Employment Standards Code prohibits employers from deducting employee pay for faulty workmanship, cash shortages or loss of property if any person other than the employee had access to the cash or property.
This covers situations like cash shortages where two employees had access to the register, dine-and-dashes at a restaurants, and drive-a-ways at gas stations. Faulty workmanship covers a wide variety of situations related to an employee failing to adequately do their job due to an accident, unforeseen circumstances, carelessness or incompe-tence.
Faulty workmanship includes things like accidental damage to an employer’s vehicle, broken dishes in a restaurant, typos in a magazine, or mistakes in production. An employer can not deduct the cost of these errors and accidents, but they do have the right to terminate an employee who is costing them too much money.
If your employer has deducted any losses due to customer theft from your paycheck, then he owes you your money back. There are helpful step-by-step instructions on the Employment Standards web page that will walk you through how to get your money back from your employer.
Visit http://work.alberta.ca/es and click on “Submit a Complaint” to get the step-by-step instructions. If you decide to ask for your money back, you will be asked to create an online account.
You will be asked a series of questions about your job such as your rate of pay, the date you started work, your supervi-sor’s name, the address of the business, etc. Have your records with you when you ll in the form to make it easy to get the information needed.
Once you have completed the online form, the system can generate a Request For Payment letter that you can give to the store owner.
If the store owner refuses to respond to your Request For Payment letter, you can then submit a formal complaint to Alberta Employment Standards.
Employment Standards sta will contact you and your employer to get the full story and try to resolve the issue. Employment Standards will decide if the employer has not followed provincial standards and will tell both parties what the decision is. If Employment Standards determines the employer owes the employee money, the employer will be ordered to pay.
If you have any further questions, call the toll-free Alberta Employment Standards Contact Centre at: 1-877-427-3731 (780-427-3731 in Edmonton).
Good luck!
