2017 ANNUAL DIOCESAN APPEAL“Building Our Family of Faith”

267 families have contributed their support to the 2017 Annual Diocesan Appeal. To date, we have received $47,130.00 in cash and $15,995.00 in pledges (total $63,125.00) toward our target of $47,240.00, putting us at 133.63% of our goal.

All parishes receive back a portion of their amounts collected. This means the more we collect, the more we can address our important parish needs.

If you have already made your 2017 Appeal gift, please accept our gratitude for your commitment. If you have not had the opportunity to contribute, please pick up a pledge envelope from our Parish Office or donate securely online by going to http://richmondcatholicfoundation.org/giving/annual-appeal/.

ATTENTION, ALL HOME GARDENERSThe Holy Family Food Pantry serves approximately 150 families a month by providing food baskets to those less fortunate. In an effort to expand the offerings we provide, Father Gaudy has asked us to incorporate more fruits and vegetables. With that goal in mind, we are asking home gardeners to plant an extra row of crops for the Food Pantry. Any fruits and vegetables collected will be packaged and offered to the families that utilize the Food Pantry services at the end of each month. By providing healthy alternatives, we will deepen our commitment to helping and serving the poor. If you have questions or would like to sign up, please call Brian Maddox at 286-0540 or email [email protected].

NATIONAL VOCATIONS AWARENESS: “God so loved the world, He gave His only Son.” How can you give yourself to God the Father in a response to that love? As a healing community, we can support people with mental health challenges and their families with unconditional non-judgmental love in the following ways:

• Increase our awareness of mental health, and where to get help when its needed.

• Offer prayers and support to individuals and families who are affected by mental health challenges.

• Serve on parish committees for outreach to individuals and families affected by mental health challenges.

• Review our parish’s inclusiveness of people with mental health challenges in community life, ministry, and leadership.

• Get involved in peer-to-peer ministry (The Chosen Ministry here at Holy Family).

• Work on justice issues affecting people with mental health challenges such as health care and employment.

Weekly Wisdom

Mass Journal:Staying Focused During Mass

Do you ever feel like you are not getting anything out of Mass? There can be many reasons for this feeling. Sometimes we are so distracted by our crazy life, our kids, or seeing friends, we can’t focus on what we are hearing. I often get so distracted I can go through an entire Mass and not remember any of the readings. We get lost in our thoughts and are missing a huge opportunity to hear God’s voice.

One way to stay focused in Mass is to use a Mass journal. Start Mass with a short prayer requesting God to reveal what He would like for YOU to hear through the readings or the Homily. During the readings and the Homily, jot down a word or a verse that speaks to YOU. The Holy Spirit often uses the Priest to relay a message just for YOU. You will often be amazed how “that Homily” was directed right at “me.” Date your journal entry and try to write down the readings for the day. Use this entry to ponder throughout the week and try to see where God is nudging you.

Pick up a small notebook or journal and give it a try. It may just deepen your spiritual life, or at least it will help you to stay focused.

Women’s Faith Sharing and Fellowship Circles are ongoing and meet at various times during the month. For more information, contact Marie Sexton at (757) 718-4147.

Music Ministry Schedule:Teen Singers & Ensemble: Thank you for leading the music at our Baccalaureate Mass on Trinity Sunday! Next rehearsal will be at 10:00 a.m. on Sunday, June 25 as we sing and play the 11:00 a.m. on Fr. Gaudy’s farewell weekend of Masses.

Holy Family Ringers: Bell ringers are relaxing for the summer, but hoping for more hands to ring more bells with us in the fall! We’ll teach you all you need to know. See Sylvia at the piano after Mass for more info or if you’d like to join a midday Tuesday rehearsal in the fall.

Parish Choir: Our happy choir is relaxing until June 24 when we’ll join Summer Schola for Fr. Gaudy’s farewell Mass, arriving at 4:30 p.m. to sing the 5:30 p.m. Mass.

Summer Schola: If you’ve signed up to sing for summer Masses, check your email for the schedule. This choir sings in 4-part harmony, so it’s best if you can read the music and prepare it in advance on your own. No week night rehearsals - we only rehearse one hour before Mass. You don’t have to be a member of Parish Choir. Summer Schola is especially for you if you like to sing in a choir but cannot make weeknight rehearsals. We sing several Sundays through the end of August. See Sylvia at the piano after Mass if you are interested in singing in Summer Schola.

THE CHOSEN MINISTRY is a ministry dedicated to ministering to persons (middle school to adults of any age) who experience disabilities. Our next meeting is our cookout on Monday, June 12, at 6:30 p.m. For more information, contact Susie Stefonowich at 342-8540 or [email protected].

MINISTRY FAIR FOLLOW UP:Thank you to the 250+ parishioners who completed a ministry form and affirmed their commitment to serving our Church community! “CREATION CARE CORNER” Following up on the June 3/4 bulletin article, the present one

continues with more information from Max Oelschlaeger’s article, “Reflections on the Creation and Religion.”

The writer insists “that in the U.S. there can be no reckoning with the environmental crisis APART from religious believers who care for Creation.” He argues that science and politics have not fundamentally met the challenges of the global ecological crisis. He maintains that care for Creation is a moral issue that, put in biblical language, reads: Thou shall not destroy or otherwise harm God’s Creation.

Mr. Oelschlaeger suggests that we who believe there is a biblical basis for ecological stewardship can do three things. One is keep mindful of Psalm 104 and every day take a few moments to give thanks for the good news of God’s presence all around us! Secondly, we would benefit by coming together in fellowship with other believers in our own church, as well as in other faith communities, to construct a moral map for dealing with the environmental issue and the present crisis. Thirdly, let this fellowship move out into the world of materialism and consumerism around us, that is, move into the public venues that democratic life affords us. There, we together, can combat the power of secularism, which considers Creation a resource only to fuel economic growth and secular progress.

In summary, believers in God have a fundamental base for caring for God’s creation – it’s God’s creation.

“A Christian who doesn’t safeguard creation, who doesn’t make it flourish, is a Christian who isn’t concerned with God’s work, that work born of God’s love for us.” ~ Pope Francis
