Listen to some of Paul’s words from the second reading at Mass this weekend (Galatians chapter 5). “For you were called for freedom, brothers and sisters. But do not use this freedom as an opportunity for the flesh; rather, serve one another through love. For the whole law is fulfilled in one statement, namely, love your neighbor as yourself.” God’s people are free to live a new law. The law of love. We are set free to love others as our sisters and brothers, because Jesus is our model of what it is to love. He went to the depths of suffering on a cross so that we could be free to become people who practice neighborly love.

How can we love the way Jesus loved?

We are able to love through the presence of the Spirit of Jesus in our lives. We are being formed slowly into the image of God’s son. The transformation doesn’t happen from the outside in…not by who we are and what we’re doing. Our transformation takes place from the inside out, by the deep wellspring of the Holy Spirit. What we can do, is open ourselves up more and more to the Holy Spirit, and in so doing, our actions, our thoughts, our impulses will keep aligning themselves with things of God. As we lean more and more into the ways of God’s love over self-destruction, we will see change in ourselves.

Christ did not die so that in the afterlife we would finally be free or be saved, He died so that we might experience freedom and salvation in the kingdom of God TODAY, in this moment, in this life. He calls us to a FREEDOM that can only be found through the actions of love for God and for one another.

Lord Jesus, in the days ahead, help us to look for moments where we can love the way You loved.

WHO ARE THE MEN OF FAITH? WHAT DO THEY DO?We are ordinary Catholic men who seek a closer relationship with God. We meet twice each month to support and encourage one another on our spiritual journey. We preview the Mass readings for the following Sunday and discuss how to apply their lessons to our daily lives. We also read and discuss good spiritual books to help us in this. We join the universal Church in praying for our needs and the needs of our brothers and sisters in Christ. CARING FOR OUR NEW HYMNALS Here is a gentle reminder about caring for our new Gather hymnals and our vintage 1980’s hymnal racks: Please avoid dropping the hymnals heavily into the hymn book racks after the opening song. Dropping it is not good for the hymnal nor the vintage rack! Instead, place your hymn books upright in the racks between the seats, not leaning

at an angle, nor sideways in the bottom of the rack. If you stand it up in the rack with the spine (the side with “GATHER” on it) facing the altar, it’s an easy fit. Especially avoid leaving the hymnal on its side with pages up deep inside the rack, because it’s very difficult for the next parishioner (or our Monday cleaning team) to dig it out of the rack. Many thanks to the Monday Cleaning Team for all they do! Please help them out, and keep singing!

RECEIVING COMMUNION WHILE YOU ARE IN THE HOSPITAL:If you or someone you know is in the hospital and would like to receive Communion on a Sunday, please notify the Church by calling the office at 757-481-5702 or sending an email to Alfie at [email protected].

THE CHOSEN MINISTRY is a ministry dedicated to ministering to persons (middle school to adults of any age) who experience disabilities. We learn that we are all “chosen” to serve God and God loves all of us just as we are. We have Holy Family The Chosen Ministry gatherings the first three Mondays of the month from 6:30-8:00 p.m. during the school year. We don’t meet in the summer. For more information, contact Susie Stefonowich at 342-8540 or [email protected].

“CREATION CARE CORNER:”

Worldwide Progress on Protecting the Environment

In Pope Francis’ Encyclical Letter on the Environment, Laudato Si’, the following three paragraphs summarize some of the Worldwide progress being made to protect the Environment: 166. “Worldwide, the ecological movement has made significant advances, thanks also to the efforts of many organizations of civil society. It is impossible here to mention them all, or to review the history of their contributions. But thanks to their efforts, environmental questions have increasingly found a place on public agendas and encouraged more far-sighted approaches. This notwithstanding, recent World Summits on the environment have not lived up to expectations because, due to lack of political will, they were unable to reach truly meaningful and effective global agreements on the environment.”

167. “The 1992 Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro is worth mentioning. It proclaimed that ‘human beings are at the centre of concerns for sustainable development.’ Echoing the 1972 Stockholm Declaration, it enshrined international cooperation to care for the ecosystem of the entire earth, the obligation of those who cause pollution to assume its costs, and the duty to assess the environmental impact of given projects and works. It set the goal of limiting greenhouse gas concentration in the atmosphere, in an effort to reverse the trend of global warming. It also drew up an agenda with an action plan and a convention on biodiversity, and stated principles regarding forests. Although the summit was a real step forward, and prophetic for its time, its accords have been poorly implemented, due to the lack of suitable mechanisms for oversight, periodic review, and penalties in cases of non-compliance. The principles which it proclaimed still await an efficient and flexible means of practical implementation.”

168. “Among positive experiences in this regard, we might mention, for example, the Basel Convention on hazardous wastes, with its system of reporting, standards and controls. There is also the binding Convention on international trade in endangered species of wild fauna and flora, which includes on-site visits for verifying effective compliance. Thanks to the Vienna Convention for the protection of the ozone layer and its implementation through the Montreal Protocol and amendments, the problem of the layer’s thinning seems to have entered a phase of resolution.”
