March 10th, 2019, First Sunday of Lent

“He was tempted by the devil” Lk 4:2

Lent is a time to appreciate and profess our faith, as God’s people do in today’s first reading. As they celebrate a liturgy of thanksgiving, Moses retells the story of the marvelous way God guided and saved them. He reminds the people that God sees their suffering and hears their cry for help. / Deuteronomy 26:4-10

Just as Moses wanted the people to express their faith, Paul calls on the Christians of Rome to “confess with their lips that Jesus is Lord.” He reminds them and us that we must truly believe that Jesus rose from the dead if we hope to be saved. Through Jesus, God’s great mercy embraces us and makes us “justified” or right with God. / Romans 10:8-13

Jesus retreats to the desert for forty days to prepare for his mission. The devil tempts Jesus with promises of bread (a symbol for material comforts), of power (author-ity over others), and of false glory (to be gained by daring to test God). But Jesus defeats the devil by defending himself with God’s word from the Old Testament. Even then the devil does not give up. He “awaits another opportunity” to tempt Jesus. / Luke 4:1-13

“Jesús fue tentado por el demonio” Lc 4:2

Cuaresma es un tiempo para apreciar y profesar nuestra fe, como pueblo de Dios, según vemos en la primera lectura de hoy. Mientras celebran una liturgia de acción de gracias, Moisés les contará de nuevo la historia de la maravillosa manera en que Dios los guió y salvó. Recuerda al pueblo que Dios ve su sufrimiento y escucha sus gritos pidiendo ayuda. / Deuteronomio 26:4-10

De la misma manera que Moisés quería que las personas expresaran su fe, Pablo llama a los cristianos de Roma a “reconocer a Jesús como Señor”. Les recuerda a ellos y a nosotros que debemos creer que Jesús verdaderamente resucitó para salvar-nos. A través de Jesús, la gran misericordia de Dios llega hasta nosotros y nos ayuda a establecer una relación correcta con Dios. / Romanos 10:8-13

En el evangelio de hoy, Jesús se retira al desierto durante cuarenta días para pre-pararse para su misión. El diablo tienta a Jesús con las promesas de pan (símbolo de las comodidades físicas), de poder (autoridad sobre los demás), y gloria falsa (tener conocimientos superiores a los de Dios). Pero Jesús derrota al diablo al defenderse con la palabra de Dios escrita en el Antiguo Testamento. Sin embargo, el diablo no se rinde, “espera otra oportunidad” para tentar a Jesús. / Lucas 4:1-13

Lent began last Wednesday as we received the ashes as a sign of our conversion andwillingnesstorenewourrelationshipwithGodandwiththosearoundus.

As we begin 40 days of LentThenumber40days,months,oryears;isalwaysaperiodoftesting,trial,proba-tion,or chastisementandendswithaperiodof restoration, revivalor renewal.Duringthese40daysofLenttheChurchrecommendsusto:• Pray • Fast • DoworkofcharityIn the Bible, prayer, fasting and almsgiving are signs of repentance, penance andconversion.Inourdaily prayer, we take some quiet time to be in the presence oftheLordrecognizingthatwearesinners.WealsorenewourgenerousresponseofconversionandcontinuewalkingwithHimhandinhand.Thisprayercouldlasttwominutesdaily.Our relationship with God grows with ongoing prayer. Another action that helps our conversion is the discipline of fasting in which we deprive ourselves of the unnecessary things in search of austerity in solidarity with thosewhohaveless.Fastingisnotonlyphysicalbutalsoincludesnegativeattitudesandsin,intoleranceandindifference.With fasting, we also imitate Christ who fast in preparation for His mission.Lastly, almsgiving brings us together in solidarity with the poor and in communion withourneighborasweshareinjusticeandlove.Weshare,notbecausewearerich, but because we are poor and really know about the sufferings of those who havelessthanus.We have a wonderful opportunity to share what God has given to us as we give witness to our faith during this Lenten season.
