SECTOR PENINSULAR CENTER Since 1993 the Ministry for Agriculture, Food and the Environment’s Nature Trails Program aims to restore for- mer transport infrastructures such as railway tracks, cattle trails and traditional routes, for public use and enjoyment. These routes take us to the countryside to discover the bio- diversity and beauty of our precious natural heritage, and discover the villages, sights, traditions and people that are part of the unique cultural landscape of our country. We invite you to visit them and offer you the keys to enjoy the trip. In this brochure you will find a brief description of the Cañada Real Soriana Oriental Nature Trail and the map for the journey, along with recommendations to make the most of this experience. We only ask one thing of you: do not forget to leave everything as you found it. The conser- vation of these pathways is also your responsibility. NATURE TRAIL CAÑADA REAL SORIANA ORIENTAL This beautiful, simple route is located in Southeastern Madrid and uses the former Cañada Real Soriana Oriental, one of the nine cattle roads crossing the Iberian Peninsula from North to South and one of the four crossing the Autonomous Region of Madrid. Along its 24 km, the trail crosses the countryside, the meadows and the barren lands of Madrid, allowing the traveller to enjoy the agricultu- ral landscape, typical from the rural areas of Brea de Tajo, Valdaracete and Fuentidueña de Tajo. This will take you to a different time, not so long ago, when numerous animals trod on these roads in their search for food. TELEPHONES OF INTEREST: Fuentidueña del Tajo City Council 0034 918 728 002 Brea de Tajo City Council 0034 918 721 013 Valdaracete City Council 0034 918 739 590 NIPO: DL: Madrid to Fuentidueña de Tajo [Madrid] A WALK ON THE FIELDS OF MADRID 1. In order to reach the starting point of this nature trail, you need to start at Brea de Tajo and follow the Mondéjar trail until it crosses the Cañada Real. Take the Cañada Real towards the left, and some meters on, you will see an information panel marking the start of this nature trail. From here, you can admire an agricul- tural landscape interspersed with holm oaks, kermes oaks and scrubland, where the green shades of olive tree groves, vineyards and the Mediterranean mounta- ins contrast with the reddish colors of the barren lands, with their soils rich in clay and their cereal crop fields. 2. After the first crossing, you will see the remains of one of the old shepherd’s shelters along the route, known as “Chozo del Callejón”. 3. For most part of this stage, you can see an uncultivated plot of land, demarcated by milestones, marking the tra- ditional width of the Cañadas Reales: 90 Castilian varas. After the crossroads with the Cañamera trail, you will see the “Chozo del Quiñonero”. 4. The trail goes on among crops and wastelands with thy- me, gromwells and kermes oaks, entering the area of “Las Lomas”. After a strong descent, the route reaches the road of Orusco de Tajuña to Brea de Tajo (M-229). At this point, you can stop and rest for a while sitting on the benches for this purpose. 5. After crossing the road, you can see the mount “El Robledal”, a perfect example of the Mediterranean hills, as well as “El Pozo de la Yesera” and the “Corrales de Calero”. 6. The trail keeps descending among helm-oak groves and ancient olive tree groves, until it reaches a crossroads with a path, where there is a small rest area with a bike rack. 7. The trail crosses the cattle road “Cordel de Merinas”, along the trail from Carabaña to Brea del Tajo. You can also go back to the village using this route. The natu- re trail, however, continues straight up to the road from Carabaña to Brea de Tajo (M-221), and, further on, up to the road to Valdaracete to Brea del Tajo (M-222). 8. From here, the trail will take you through the fields of Valdaracete, arriving at a hill where you will enjoy some nice panoramic views. Further on, the trail meets the road from Valdaracete to Estremera, where you will find a rest area. After a descent, the trail arrives at a crossro- ads, where you must go straight. 9. This point marks the beginning of the stage leading to Fuentidueña de Tajo, passing by the viewpoint of Las Faldas del Valle. 10. There are several ups and downs along this stage of the trail, until you reach the crossroads with the Fuentesaúco trail, where our trail keeps ascending toward the Cerro de la Muela. Further on, a descent will take you to the point where the streams Fuentesaúco and Valseco meet.
