Welcome to the 51st Commencement Ceremony at Cañada College! Today’s Commencement is a magnificent celebration of our students and the remarkable accomplishments and successes they have achieved. Our graduates, and their loved ones, joining in this celebration today will be hearing inspiring speeches about the bright, promising future that lies ahead for our graduates. Collectively, we share in the excitement of where the next journey may take them. Graduates are also encouraged at the time of Commencement to look back on their experiences – to reflect on what lessons they have learned, who influenced them, and how they have grown and changed. We know that this reflection is important.

As students of Cañada College and of life, you’re neither at the beginning or the end of your journey. Instead, you’re somewhere in-between – in the middle you might say. You may

not know what lies ahead and you can’t go back and relive the past; you’re simply in the moment.

Sometimes it’s challenging to be in the moment; to fully inhabit, explore, and experience every moment – and to be open to what might present itself to you. While in the present moment, you might find that you can be more open to a different point of view; you might be able to quiet all the voices telling you what you should do; you might find the courage to make a difficult choice; you might find some unexpected joy. And, being in the moment almost always allows you to listen to your own inner guide and heart. And that is very important!

Finally, being in the moment allows you to more fully embrace and enjoy celebrations like this one today. So, take a moment and look around at your fellow classmates, your family and friends, and your Cañada family, who have come together to honor you. All eyes are on you and they’re beaming with pride for all that you’ve done, and all that you are. Congratulations!

Dr. Jamillah Moore, President, Cañada College

Tiffany HankeSumma Cum LaudeAssociates of Science in Early Childhood Education: Child DevelopmentCertificate in Early Childhood Education

When asked about her favorite campus memories, Tiffany responded:

I began my Cañada endeavors majoring in Early Childhood Education (ECE). My first ECE Professor was always so supportive, answered my millions of questions and guided me without hesitation. For that, I will never forget and will always appreciate Val Goines, may she forever rest in eternal peace.

One of the many turning points in my life was when I made an appointment with Counselor Karen Olesen. During the meeting, I

mentioned my anxiety in classes and my lifetime of feeling like I was struggling through school. She was the first person to acknowledge my complaints and offer me assistance. She referred me to the Disability Resource Center (DRC) where I was tested and finally got the proof that I have a learning disability. I’d never known how to accomplish straight A’s prior to having access to accommodations, but I was so relieved to have answers. Max, Krystal, To Nhu, Celeste, Jenna and Don from the Cañada DRC gave me the pep talks and encouraging pushes that I needed. Without all of the DRC staff that I have worked with, I don’t know how I ever could have accomplished being the first in my immediate family to graduate college, let alone be graduating as a student with a learning disability having a 4.0 GPA with Summa Cum Laude status and being the solo Valedictorian of my class. Thank you!

Shout out to Ché Meneses’ Spring 2019 Communications 130 class. The students in this class helped me so much with personal growth in my final semester at Cañada. Creating an environment of acceptance and support to everyone in the class was an experience I needed and truly appreciate.

Last, a huge thank you to Jai, Brian and Bo from the Campus Bookstore! The immediate celebration that they surprised me with when we realized I made Summa Cum Laude while purchasing my regalia created so much joy in me. I drove home that day with happy tears in my eyes. Thank you for pumping me up and showering me with all the excitement that you did! It is one of my favorite campus memories.

Class of 2019 Valedictorian

At the Spring Student Reception held on May 10, Tiffany Hanke was acknowledged as Cañada’s top student for the 2018-2019 Academic Year. We are proud to recognize Tiffany as the Class of 2019 Valedictorian.

Christopher Jimenez

At one-year-old, Christopher Jimenez emigrated with his mother from Mexico to California so that he could live a healthy and prosperous life. At the age two-years-old, he was diagnosed with a heart defect known as a Double Inlet Left Ventricle and had two major heart surgeries before the age of three-years-old. During his Freshman year of high school, his doctor noticed that he had a heart arrhythmia and advised that Christopher would need a pacemaker for the rest of his life.

At the age of 15, Christopher had what would be the first of many pacemaker surgeries and his life after surgery was anything but normal. He missed an entire semester of school, and when he returned, the stress of catching up, paired with the agonizing

pain, sent him into a deep depression. After the years went by the pain went away, but the anxiety and depression remained. He did poorly in high school and, due to his health, almost did not graduate from high school. After high school, Christopher went straight to Cañada College and depended on his mom in his first years of college due to being undocumented and not being able to find a job. It wasn’t until 2015 when he was accepted into the DACA program and was able to serve as Retention Specialist, and more, here at Cañada. For the first time in his life, he found purpose and became hopeful.

While at Cañada College, Christopher earned a spot on the Dean’s list for five straight semesters and counting. He has also served as a Retention Specialist, Supplemental Instructor with the Embedded Peer Instruction Cohort (EPIC) program and Peer Tutor in the STEM Center. As a Peer Tutor, he realized the joys of helping others in Math and became known by students as selfless and persistent; students knew they could count on him to help them no matter what. He has been able to overcome obstacles such as suffering from heart problems, being an undocumented immigrant from Mexico and experiencing anxiety and depression, by simply doing what he loves, which is helping others find their potential in Math. This has led him to continue working towards a degree in Mathematics.

This Fall, Christopher plans to transfer to either UC Santa Cruz or San Francisco State University to earn a Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics. In the long run, he sees himself receiving a Master’s degree in Mathematics and returning to Cañada College to teach Math. His inspiration for teaching comes from his professors at Cañada College, because they are passionate about what they do and he feels the same passion when he tutor students in Math.

Jay Magaña-Fierro

Jay Magaña-Fierro enrolled at Cañada College in Fall 2014. He is a first generation student who had to figure out the college system all by himself. He became a part of Extended Opportunity Program & Services (EOPS) and Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, which helped him with his college journey. Jay quickly became involved in various extracurricular organizations, including: Student Senate, Tutoring, Gender Sexuality Alliance (GSA) Club and the Drama Department. While tutoring, Jay found that he had a skill for describing challenging mathematical concepts to his classmates, leading him to consider a career in education. He also found that he enjoys helping other students, which led him to become a Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) Peer Mentor and helping other historically underrepresented minorities, like himself, pursue a career in STEM.

Jay was very shy when first starting at Cañada, but once becoming more involved on campus, Cañada soon became a second home to him. Jay practically lived at Cañada; he could always be found at the Learning Center, STEM Center or at the Clubhouse for GSA meetings. This year he will pass on the role of President and the responsibility of Alliance Day, an event created by him meant to bring together the Cañada community.

This fall, Jay will be graduating with an Associate in Science for Transfer (AS-T) Degree in Mathematics and an Associate in Arts (AA) Degree in Communication Studies and transferring to Sonoma State University to obtain his Bachelors of Arts Degree in Mathematics.

The colorful attire worn by the graduates, the faculty and officers of the College on the occasion of Commencement has historic roots in medieval times. A statute in 1321 required that all “Doctors, Licentiates and Bachelors” of the University of Coimbra wear gowns. Academic attire began to appear on United States campuses in the late 1890’s. A conference was held in May of 1895 at Columbia University with college representatives to establish a code of regalia for American colleges and universities. Since then there have been a few revisions, but what remains in a tradition of colors found in gowns, hoods and caps.

The faculty Grand Marshal will carry an academic mace at today’s ceremony. The academic mace, first used in the 14th century, is descended from the club of Hercules. The scepter on the mace stands for lawful power and regal authority, and was carried by Zeus, the Greek God of moral law and order. Cañada’s mace is made primarily of Red Oak with Olivewood embellishments. These are two trees which are abundant on the Cañada College campus.

Bachelor’s and Master’s gowns show pointed sleeves, open yokes and no trimmings. Doctoral gowns have bell shaped sleeves and velvet trimming. Hoods are worn over the gown to designate bachelor’s, master’s or doctoral degrees. Hoods are not worn for associate degrees. Inside all hoods are the colors of the college or university granting the degree. The colored velvet binding or edging of the hood is determined by the degree subject awarded.

Cañada Honor Sashes

Students graduating with Honors designations are awarded sashes which signify their level of academic achievement. Students who are graduating with Summa Cum Laude designation (4.0 cumulative GPA) receive a gold sash; students graduating with Magna Cum Laude designation (3.5 and above cumulative GPA) receive a silver sash, students graduating with Cum Laude designation (3.3 and above cumulative GPA) receive a bronze sash. Students who are eligible for Phi Theta Kappa National Honor Society receive a gold PTK sash.

Melva JohnsonMelva began as a student at Cañada College in Spring 2008 and majored in Human Services. She was an inspiration to her two older daughters, Krystal and Candice, who followed in her footsteps. While pursuing her education, she also worked as a Student Assistant in both the Learning Center and the Disability Resource Center. Melva graduated with Honors from Cañada College in Spring 2010. She began her path to transfer to Notre Dame de Namur University that Fall, but the path was cut short, due to Cancer, in Spring 2011. Melva fought and beat Cancer to attend all three of her daughters’ graduations in May of that year and

watched proudly as her daughters became full-time employees at Cañada College. She focused on her health and her family for the rest of her life. Melva is survived by her three daughters, son-in-law, and two grandchildren (the second due to arrive this summer).

Alan MillerAlan began his career in the San Mateo County Community College District (SMCCCD) family in the mid-2000’s where he began as a Swinerton employee, assisting with the bond projects, then moved to the Construction Planning Department and, for the past six years, worked in the Information Technology Services Department. Many employees interacted with Alan on a variety of projects or he was behind-the-scenes, ensuring everything was running smoothly. In his life away from SMCCCD, he loved history, museums, Disneyland, cooking, Godfather movies and reading (his favorite author was Isaac Asimov). Alan passed

away unexpectedly, but peacefully in his sleep, on April 20. He is survived by two brothers and his SMCCCD family.

Dawn MurakamiDawn began as a student in the Cañada Fashion Program and was subsequently hired as a Lab Assistant by the department in 2006. She assisted in the classroom and played an important role in marketing the program through her design skills. Dawn helped build the success of some of the Cañada Fashion events, especially the Designer Sale and Artistry in Fashion. In her life away from Cañada, she was a regular member of a local orchestra and a youth group leader in computer coding and robotics. Dawn is survived by her husband and son.
