La Cañada Flintridge Sister Cities Association 2018 International Student Ambassadors Program INFORMATION SHEET SEEKING INTERNATIONAL STUDENT AMBASSADORS WANTED: Freshmen, sophomores, or juniors who attend high school or live in La Cañada Flintridge, to participate in our international student exchange with students from Villanueva de La Cañada, Spain. The La Cañada Flintridge Sister Cities Association Selection Committee will make the final decision on who will represent La Cañada Flintridge. ABOUT THE CITY: . VILLANUEVA DE LA CAÑADA is home to the European Space Agency’s Astronomy and Planetary Science Centre, one of the country’s biggest leisure parks, Aquopolis water park and two Universities. It has a population of 20,000 that swells to 30,000 with its university students. It is a young city, known for its parks and grassy areas along with its architecturally strong, cultural, and sporting structures. The income per capita is one of the highest in Madrid. SISTER CITY: The objective of the program is to create goodwill and further international understanding at the community level on a continuing, long-term basis. The purpose is to help learn about the people of other countries, their customs, their similarities as well as differences, and allow for a better understanding among people. THE PROGRAM: Spanish students will arrive from Villanueva de La Cañada for a two week stay with local students and their families who are participating in the international student exchange. The Spanish students are expected to arrive July 2nd or 3 rd , 2018. Local students chosen to participate in the exchange program will travel to Spain with the Spanish exchange students for a two week stay in their homes, departing July 17 th or 18 th . U.S. students return to La Cañada Flintridge around August 1 st or 2 nd . COST: Travel costs are estimated to be approximately $2,000 which includes: round-trip plane ticket, luggage fee, travel insurance, and taxi or train service to and from the Madrid airport. Once in Villanueva de La Cañada, students will be hosted by their Spanish family;however, students will be responsible for their own spending money. APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS: Students must be U.S. Citizens, have a current passport (expiration beyond 6 months from date of travel), and be in good physical health (doctor’s letter of verification submitted with the application). Students must join the La Cañada Flintridge Sister Cities Association as a student member. Membership application is available at lcfsistercities.org. Include a $25 check made out to: LCF Sister Cities Association. TIME COMMITMENT: Prior to departure, students and parents will be expected to attend an orientation session. During the 2018-2019 school year students must commit to a minimum 1-year period, serving an active role as an official representative of the City of La Cañada Flintridge. This may include local speaking engagements, attending events, publicity photos, and actively participating in the LCF Sister Cities Youth Group.
