Principals Report

One of the great strengths of our school is the focus on building positive relationships

with each other. This not only includes relationships between students but also

between students and staff, as well as building strong partnerships with members of

our wider community. Being a smaller school with a focus on inclusivity, these

relationships are continuing to grow with positive outcomes.

Our Stage 5 year days, held at the end of Week 6, were an example of another

successful initiative focused on enhancing positive relationships and behaviour in our

students. Year 9 travelled to Griffith, attending the Police Citizens Youth Club in the

morning and bowling in the afternoon. At the PCYC, students engaged in learning about

responsible use of technology and looking out for each other at school. The afternoon

saw the students enjoy team building activities whilst bowling and enjoying a pizza

lunch. Year 10 students enjoyed the challenge of climbing Galore Hill and working

together on a number of team building exercises, as well as sharing a BBQ lunch. My

sincere thanks to Year Advisors, Nadine Goring (Year 9), Emma Sergeant (Year 10) and

Michelle Donaldson (Year 10) for their dedication to their year groups and to making

these days a success. Students in Stage 6 will be involved in their year days in Term 3,

whilst Stage 4 will look forward to their activities in Term 4.

Part of our school priority on relationships includes a focus on restorative practice in

our dealings with each other. A restorative school is one which values positive and

respectful relationships. These relationships are central to learning, growth and a

healthy school climate for both students and adults.

Our ‘Hands on High School’ night held last Wednesday, was highly successful, with a

large number of prospective students and their families attending. Students were given

an opportunity to engage in STEM, dance and drama activities as well as having a tour

of our school. Mr Bryant, myself and Year 7 Advisor for 2018, Miss Brooke, were also

able to speak with students about our wonderful school and the opportunities offered

to all students.

This Thursday, June 15, our academic assembly will be held in the school hall

commencing at 9.50am (period 2). This occasion will allow the school community to

come together to recognise our highest achievers this term. Stage 6 exams will follow in

Week 10 (please see the exam timetable included as part of this newsletter).

This week, Mr Bryant is out of the school attending Principal meetings. In his absence, I

will be relieving as Principal. Mrs Langley and Mr Brooker will be sharing the relieving

Deputy Principal role.

Kind Regards,

Marni Milne

NHS Biology students visited CSU yesterday to participate in a HSC Study Day.

Students completed investigations into enzymes, blood cells, pentadactyl limbs,

plant pathogens and interviewed practicing Biologists. These experiences comple-

mented the HSC Biology curriculum very well and the students were a credit to our school.

THE IMPACT OF PRIVACY LAW ON THE INFORMATION PARENTS CAN BE PROVIDED ABOUT OTHER PARENT’S CHIL-

DREN

Our school holds information about our students. Some of this information is highly sensitive.

The way this information is collected, used, disclosed and secured by our school is subject to NSW legislation in-

cluding the Privacy and Personal Information Protection Act 1998, Health Records and Information Protection

Act 2002 and the Children and Young Persons (Care and Protection) Act 1998.

These laws limit the circumstances in which your child’s information can be disclosed to other parents. They also

limit the circumstances in which you can be provided with information about action the school has taken in rela-

tion to other people’s children.

This means, for example, you may not be provided with complete details of the action the school has taken in

relation to a student who has engaged in unacceptable behaviour that has impacted on your child.

You should not assume that no action has been taken because you cannot be provided with information about

what the school has done to deal with an issue relating to your child’s interaction with another student.

Our school takes inappropriate behaviour from students very seriously and responds to that behaviour consistent

with the school’s student discipline and welfare procedures.

If you would like further information about the school’s general approach to inappropriate behaviour from stu-

dents please contact the Deputy Principal or Principal on (02) 69591744

Frequently asked questions

Which students will participate in the NAPLAN Online School Readiness Test?

Students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 will participate.

How should I prepare my child for the NAPLAN Online School Readiness Test?

Your child will not need any academic preparation for the school readiness test. This is not a test of their literacy and numera-

cy skills, but an opportunity for them to experience the online test format and for their school to assess its online testing capa-

bility.

How long is the school readiness test?

The school readiness test is expected to include two assessments: a writing assessment* and a combined numeracy/

literacy assessment. The duration of each assessment will be approximately 40 minutes.

* Year 3 students will only be expected to complete the combined numeracy/literacy assessment.

When will my school participate in the readiness test?

One week within the test period in August and September will be identified for each school to conduct readiness testing.

How will students be prevented from using the internet or spellcheckers when completing the test?

The NAPLAN Online assessment platform will have state-of- the-art security protections. The assessment is delivered inside a

locked-down browser. This ensures students cannot access the internet or spellcheckers while completing the test.

Will schools and parents be provided with information on the results of the readiness test?

There will be feedback to schools about the technical information gained from the readiness testing. There will be no re-

porting of student test results from the readiness test.
