This is the final week of the three week study tour by students from Salesio Elementary School, Kwangdu, South Korea. We have had the pleasure of 20 students, 1 staff member, 1 tour guide and 1 translator being part of our school for the past two weeks. They have immersed themselves into our school life, improving their English, making new friends and experiencing the Australian lifestyle. Our students have also made the most of the visit, learning more about Korea and its people. The Korean’s homestay families have also been busy organising activities to ensure each student and adult have had the opportunity to experience the sights and attractions of the lower north coast, something they would not have had the opportunity to experience if they had elected to stay in Sydney or Newcastle. I would like to thank them for enriching our lives and hopefully we have done the same for them. The school wishes them well for their remainder of their time here at BCS and in Australia before they head off home. The group will be departing Bulahdelah Central School on Saturday at 9am on their way to Melbourne before heading back to Korea. Their school website can be found at http://www.salesio.es.kr/ (although you will need to know Korean to be able to fully navigate the site) and contains stories and photos from their time here at Bulahdelah. I have also put some photographs on our web site (www.bulahdelah-c.schools.nsw.edu.au). Education Week opening I had the pleasure of attending the launch of the Myall Learning Community and Education Week Opening at Tea Gardens Public School last Wednesday. The Myall Learning Community is made up of Booral Public School, Bulahdelah Central School, Bungwahl Public School, Coolongolook Public School and Tea Gardens Public School. As a learning community we are working together to improve the teaching and learning opportunities in all schools and ensure a smooth transition of students from primary education into our secondary department. The majority of students from Year 6 at these schools transition to Bulahdelah Central School to complete their secondary education so it is important that we work together to meet the needs of all students through the sharing of quality teaching and learning resources. At the Education Week opening two of our teachers were recognised for their work here at Bulahdelah Central School. Sonia McDonald received her award for continued development and implementation of technology into classroom practices and Casey Connell for her support and development of Aboriginal programs at Bulahdelah Central School. Congratulations to both recipients.

Unfortunately the wet weather this week has had an impact on some of our Education

Week celebrations. The Chris Hoare Cup against Gloucester HS has had to be postponed as was the Primary Athletics Carnival. At this stage there is no new date for these events. One event that did take place was the HSC Drama Trial HSC last Wednesday night. It is a great opportunity to see the creative talents of our HSC students who have been working on their performances and major works for most of the year. This event also signals the start of an intense period of work for our Year 12 as they commence their HSC Trial exams this Wednesday and complete a range of major works in English, Industrial Technology, Art, Drama and Music. We wish them all the best in the weeks ahead and hope they have prepared themselves well.

Sergeant Bruce Gault, the Police Liaison Officer, visited last week talking to Year 11 about safe partying and to Year 7 about Cyberbullying. Inappropriate comments on Facebook and bullying of students by MSN continues to be a problem and it is important that parents carefully monitor their child’s use of social networking sites. Please don’t hesitate to let the school know if there are instances of threatening messages involving students at school so that action can be taken to stamp out any bullying.

Selections for electives and courses in Years 9 and 11 for 2011 are well advanced and students in Year 8 are currently making final choices. If you have any concerns please contact Mr. Gladys or myself to discuss your child’s selections. Mr. McKinley will be conducting interviews to discuss future career options and course selections with Year 10 at the beginning of next week prior to confirming final selections.

Finally I would like to thank all parents who attended our parent/teacher evening. This year a few changes were made to the organisation and many parents I spoke to commented that they preferred the Middle School building as a venue for the interviews. This is an important opportunity for parents to meet their child’s teachers and raise concerns so please let us know if you have any suggestions to make this evening more effective. I also remind parents that information about student progress can be sought at any time by way of an interim report by contacting myself.

- Roger Horton, Secondary Deputy Principal

The rainy weather lately has certainly interfered with lots of our planned sporting activities.

The athletics carnival has had to be postponed and will now be held on Wednesday 11th August, weather permitting. The girls’ soccer has also been put on hold due to the inclement weather. Boys and girls touch football will be played in the coming weeks.

Our visiting Korean students have only one week left of their stay. They have fitted easily into the BCS way of life and are enjoying their stay. The BCS students have also enjoyed interacting with them. There has been a lot of learning, both ways, taking place. I would like to thank the families who have hosted the students. I trust this has been a positive experience for all involved!!!!!

Education Week is over for another year and the students were involved in a variety of initiatives throughout the week. A highlight of the week was the final of the Public Speaking Competition. Congratulations to the winners of each stage. The launch of the Myall Learning Community was also very successful. It was great to see a number of our students involved in the MLC mass choir. Well done guys!!!!

A reminder to ALL parents, that Parent/Teacher interviews will be held this week. Please make the most of this opportunity to meet with your child’s teacher to discuss their educational and social progress. If the dates advertised do not suit, please contact the school so that a mutually convenient time can be negotiated!! Some dates for your diary- 9/8 Assembly, 10/8 Parent/Teacher meetings, 11/8 Athletics Carnival, 12/8 Dolphin Watch cruise, 14/8 Korean students leave, 17/8 Zone Athletics (field), 20/8 Zone Athletics (track) Cheers, Sally Thompson, Primary Deputy Principal

During the recent holiday, a dedicated Year 12 Geography class and their teacher Miss Lister went on their annual Geography Case Study Excursion. The excursion started early at the school on the 13th July. From Bulahdelah Central School we went to Myall Shores Eco-point Resort. This was part of our Tourism Study. We had a gentleman speak to us about their organisation, their accommodation options, and the general running of the resort. We departed about 10.30am and headed to our Ecosystems at Risk Case Study of Anna Bay. Next came a 4WD tour and sand boarding activity on the Stockton sand dunes. This was amazing; we even saw whales and dolphins. We finished the tour around lunch, and then headed into the Honey Suckle Development in Newcastle. We spent the night in Newcastle. And then next day got on a train at 6am and headed to Sydney to explore our Urban Dynamics Case Study of Sydney. After catching the train to Circular Quay we headed for the Harbour Bridge and Opera House. We then discovered the ferry mode of transport, travelling from Circular Quay to Darling Harbour. We got out right at the Aquarium and begun discovering the Dugong and Shark Exhibition. (Hence the shark photo on page 1!) After a short lunch break we headed over to Pyrmont for a guided tour of the area. This was a great excursion, and was very beneficial to all students. Thanks to those who organised it.

On Thursday 12th August our visiting South Korean students and their host families have the opportunity to participate in this excursion as part of our cultural exchange program. Students will travel by bus, departing BCS at 8:45am to arrive at Nelson Bay in time to board the Moonshadow Dolphin Watch craft. Students are required to wear school uniform, and also include a hat, sunscreen, comfortable walking shoes and a wind/rain jacket. Students are also requested to bring food and drink for the day, or money to purchase these. Students will be accompanied by Ms. Thompson and the South Korean staff.

The second revised date for this match against Halidays Point Public School is set down for today, 9th August. This is the PSSA Knockout Competition and will be held at Bulahdelah Central School oval. Perhaps we should add, “Weather Permitting”!

The NSW State SRC Conference is the peek leadership conference supported by the Department. Up to 130 secondary student leaders, selected by their peers at inter-school and regional SRC meetings, including ten Aboriginal student leaders participated from 3rd to 6th August at Vision Valley. Each day of the conference was filled with fun and motivational activities, such as student leadership skill development workshops, theme related activities, a dance and a Student Forum. Ex-BCS student Rebecca Maybury, currently Relieving Head Teacher HSIE at Moree Secondary College and Regional SRC Co-ordinator, was appointed earlier this year to the State SRC Conference Action team (SCAT). This involved taking on the roles of staff supervisor, mentor and being involved with the planning of the Conference, tasks she has enjoyed immensely while continuing in her role of Head Teacher. DO YOU HAVE NEWS OF EX-STUDENTS? Please don’t hesitate to contact BCS so we can pass on the details.

Please mark these dates on your home calendar and remind your student.

There is an old and very apt saying, “Our habits make or break us”.

Habits are things that we do often and do easily as in a second nature. Renowned organistional health expert, Stephen Covey, believes that to make something a habit we must make ourselves repeat it often for 30 days. So, students who are setting up new study habits should practice them regularly. They are an all time thing, not a sometime thing. The key is for students to preserve to continually use them in their study program until they become second nature to them. When this occurs, it will go a long way towards them achieving their true potential. Students’ qualities as learners are developed as they continually and consciously “do the right thing” and “do the thing right” over a five to six week period; one or two weeks is not enough. Encouraging them to give it a go will benefit your student’s progress immensely and be very rewarding and satisfying. Should you have any concerns or queries regarding your student’s progress please do not hesitate to contact the Year Advisor.

NUTRITION NOTE: Create your very own Masterchef! Recipes for children to make at home. Children like to follow similar behaviours to that of their role models, idols and peers. Parents often complain that it is difficult to get them eating

healthier options such as vegetables, wholegrain breads and certain fruits. By providing an opportunity for children to help in the kitchen you may be able to improve the range of foods they will accept. By preparing food for themselves they feel a sense of ownership which increases their self esteem and confidence to try new foods. Why not try some of these recipes out with your child and explain to them why they are healthy to eat. Berry blast smoothie –May be useful to make in the mornings with your child, particularly if they are reluctant to eat breakfast. Fruit kebabs – Any fruits can be used, for example; strawberries, banana,

kiwi fruit, pine apple and watermelon. You will need skewers or plastic sticks (depending how young your child is) the children then can design their own fruit patterns to put on the skewer. Salad wraps – purchase a wide variety of salad and a meat/meat alternative, for example- cold roast meats, like beef or chicken, tuna, carrots, spinach leaves, cheese, beans, celery, beetroot, avocado, cherry tomatoes, lettuce. Assist the child in cutting/grating these up (depending on age), lay out the wrap and let the child put as much on the wrap and hopefully it will be so full, you will have to help them wrap it up. Useful facts to talk about when making these with your child

• Vitamin A in carrots contains B carotene which helps keep eyes healthy. • Tuna and salmon have a special ingredient in it called omega

3 fatty acids which helps your brain work and increases your memory.

• Cheese and milk are dairy foods, which contains calcium to keep our bones healthy and strong.

The BCS Canteen staff Sheryl Barry (Canteen Manager) and Stephanie Dennis (Assistant) continue to provide a healthy and varied selection of foods for our students and staff. They prepare healthy one-off specials each week. These specials are publicised each fortnight in the school newsletter, on the school web site and the daily notices. Students and staff are invited to order from this list in addition to the Menu/Price List. Specials this fortnight are:

FAME EXHIBITION – DO YOU WANT TO HANG YOUR ART WORK? Each year the Myall Coast Arts Network holds the FAME (Focus on Artists of the Myall Exhibition) as part of the Myall Coast Festival in October and we are seeking artistic young people to participate in this year’s event. The exhibition offers artists the opportunity to exhibit and sell their work with mentoring support from the previous year’s exhibiting artists. The 3-day exhibition gives artists with little or no exhibition experience, the opportunity to develop their professional practice and exhibit their artwork. The artists will be involved in all aspects of exhibition practice including curating the show, coordinating the hanging of artworks, lighting & display, pricing their artworks, publicity & marketing, the opening night launch and artwork sales. The mentoring part of the program is also an important part of its success and we encourage the incumbent artists to mentor next year’s artists and so on. This year, the FAME exhibition will be held during the last weekend of October at the Myall Coast Festival in Tea Gardens (29th to 31st October 2010). The FAME exhibition was first held over 3 days in 2007, with 2 feature artists exhibiting around 70 paintings and illustrations between them. For the last 2 years the exhibition grew to include 3 artists and this year we would like to have 4 artists exhibiting. It is expected that each artist would have approximately 15 to 20 pieces of artwork, either 2D suitable for hanging or 3D works. They can be in any medium. There is no fee for exhibiting; however a nominal commission on sales would be retained by MCAN to help in covering the costs of the event. The event is coordinated by the Myall Coast Arts Network Inc. (MCAN) with mentoring support from the previous year’s artists and is a collaborative effort between the artists, MCAN, the Tea Gardens Hotel and the Myall Coast Chamber of Commerce & Tourism. The exhibition is held in the Silver Dolphin Room at the Tea Gardens Hotel. MCAN is inviting local artists who would like to exhibit at FAME to contact Jen Nichols, President of MCAN. We are interested in hearing from all artists, but particularly high school students who are interested in exhibiting. Please contact Jen Nichols for further information on 4997 1142 or 0418 426 089 or via email [email protected].
