I have written previously about student mental health and depression

but I thought given the recent death of Robin Williams it was timely to revisit the topic. I’m aware that students are certainly talking about his life, achievements and his death which does provide an avenue to discuss the issues around mental health and certainly depression. For our children and young people good mental health means that they are able to manage the ups and downs of school and life. It also means, importantly, they feel good about themselves and are confident in getting on with their lives. We know all children feel sad at times, but feelings of sadness with great intensity that persist for weeks or months may be a symptom of more chronic depression or major depressive disorder. These depressive disorders are more than “the blues”; they affect a young person’s thoughts, feelings, behaviour, and body, and can lead to school failure, social isolation, and even suicide. Symptoms of depression in children and young people often go unrecognised or untreated and can be often masked by other behaviours such as anger or aggression. Symptoms may include:

Changes in appetite.

Poor sleep patterns.

Frequently seeming upset, sad, anxious or negative.

Becoming withdrawn or isolated from others.

Becoming involved in risky or criminal behaviour.

Significant change in interest in schoolwork and activities.

Difficulty commencing tasks/staying on task or refusal to attempt tasks.

Difficulty completing, or refusal to complete classwork and assessments.

Lateness to school, truancy, frequent absences and/or school refusal.

There is lots of information available on the web to support parents in developing resilient children who enjoy positive mental health and wellbeing. The following are just some of the websites that can provide additional information and support for parents and their children. Beyondblue (http://www.beyondblue.org.au/) Beyondblue is working to reduce the impact of depression and anxiety in the community by raising awareness and understanding, empowering people to seek help, and supporting recovery, management and resilience. Headspace (http://www.headspace.org.au/) Headspace provides helpful information for parents on boys and girls, adolescents, emotional development, parenting practices and how best to support children and young people who are going through tough times. The following two sites provide resources that are used within school nationally. KidsMatter (http://www.kidsmatter.edu.au/) KidsMatter is an Australian mental health and wellbeing initiative set in primary schools and early childhood education and care services. It's unique because it brings together all the most important people in a child’s life - especially families! Lots of resources and links can be found on their website. MindMatters (http://www.mindmatters.edu.au/) MindMatters is about young people; their health and wellbeing. It helps schools to support young people to achieve their goals, build relationships and cope with challenges. Their website provides useful resources and links for young people, families, teachers and schools.

Hints and Tips No 7: Getting to school on time

It is essential to establish a regular routine each morning and arriving at school on time is an important part of your child’s morning routine. It is important to be at school on time because:

It sets up good habits for the future.

It provides social benefits – good play time and discussion among friends.

The school day usually begins with the teacher giving out information to students. E.g. any changes to school routines, coming events etc.

It is an opportunity for important teacher student interaction before school.

There is plenty of time for ordering lunches if needed.

A duck’s quack doesn’t

echo and nobody

knows why.

BCS DEPUTY PRINCIPAL:

Since our last newsletter we have had some very exciting news; Karl Price has

been accepted into a NYSF (National Youth Science Forum) position for 2015. The NYSF is a 2 week holiday program for students who have completed Year 11 and show academic success and potential in the areas of Science and Engineering. This program is supported by Rotary clubs throughout NSW. It has a very competitive process for students to be selected. Karl competed against students from other nearby schools to be accepted into this prestigious program. We are very proud of Karl's achievements and know that he will have an exceptional time at the forum. Another student I would like to raise your awareness of is Brad Aldis. Brad, along with a small band of enthusiastic students, is currently preparing for the Bike Challenge to be held on 18th – 25th September. Brad is not only preparing physically for this gruelling event, but he has also been growing his hair. His plan is to seek donations, with the highest donor receiving the rights to shave his head. Brad wants to better his $600 fundraising efforts from last year by using a similar strategy. The Bike Challenge this year is raising funds for Stewart House and Prostate Cancer. If you would like to support Brad please donate at the front office or see me (Deb Gilbert). Also on fundraising for great causes, our Year 12 English Studies class, led by Ms Caro, had a fundraising event for epilepsy at the end of last term. This unit of work challenged the students to organise an event, including advertisement, complete a role within the project and work together as a team. The class decided on a sausage sizzle and decorated the courtyard to raise awareness of epilepsy. I am very pleased to announce that after all accounts have been finalised, the group raised just over $500 for this cause.

It is certainly the business end of our HSC classes at the moment as students are sitting their Trial exams and completing their major works in Industrial Technology Timber, Drama and Music. I would like to congratulate our students and staff for their efforts and trust that their Trial marks will provide guidance for the remainder of the term. I would like to support an initiative of the Tea Gardens Library who have put together a HSC Help Night on the 10th September and recommend that it is not too late to get some great advice to prepare for the HSC and manage the growing stress. In addition to their studies, a small group of students have started making decisions for their formal. More information will be sent out to parents shortly, however I thought it would be important to mark the calendar for the 11th November for our School Formal dinner before we get too busy. In this newsletter you will find the summary of the new process for School Captain nominations. The concept is to have a transparent and equitable process that acknowledges the many styles of young leaders. This is now in place and I look forward to monitoring the implementation and effects it will have on our student nominations next year.

Gymnastics has finished for another

year and I am pleased to report that the gym instructor was very impressed with

the skills and attitudes of our students. Well done everybody! 3Mc have been participating in a “Murder Under the Microscope” challenge and I am very proud to report that they have come 1st and 2nd respectively in two of the research projects – Eco Successes 2 and Eco Disasters 2. Murder Under the Microscope is Australia’s largest online educational, environmental activity. Typically, Murder Under the Microscope hosts an interactive mystery game for students in Years 5 to 10. The super sleuths called themselves the “Bulahdelah Bombers” and were the first and second team respectively to correctly identify the environmental success/disaster from a series of on-line clues. This is an amazing feat and Mrs McDonald and her clever detectives should be congratulated on this outstanding achievement. I think we have some budding environmental scientists in the making. Well done and keep up the good work 3Mc!

We took quite a large contingent of students to both the zone track and field carnivals, last week. All students were excellent ambassadors for our school, conducting themselves well. Congratulations to all students, on your efforts, in qualifying for zone. Outstanding results achieved were; Tarryn Clifford 3rd 11yr Girls Shot Put, Billy Watt 2nd 10yr Boys Shot Put, Angus Devon 3rd 10yr Boys Shot Put and Toby Crispin 2nd 13yr Boys 100m. Toby also qualified to represent the Port Stephens Zone at the Hunter Regional Carnival later in the month. Well done Toby! Thank you, to the parents who attended for your ongoing support. Thank you to Ms Mostyn for your assistance on Friday.

Showcase Day at Tea Gardens Public School was once again a resounding success. This day is an important event in our transition to the high school program. Thank you to Ms Cunich (Chinese), Ms Connell (English), Miss Moncrieff (History), Miss Brewer (Science), Mr McPherson (Maths) and Miss McKenzie (PD/H/PE) for their

input into the day. The students loved the taster activities, especially the “elephant snot” experiment and really got a feel for what they can expect when they begin high school in 2015.

It was fabulous being able to visit each of the activities and witness the interest and engagement of the students. It also gives the Stage 3 students in the Myall Learning Community the opportunity to meet and make few friends prior to beginning high school. Great work everyone! Continued…….

Some of our Stage 2 and 3 boys participated in the Danny Buderus Rugby League gala day last week. They won one of their three games and although they didn’t qualify for the semis, they had a great day and enjoyed the competition. Thank you to the parents who provided transport to and from this event. Your support is greatly appreciated. Thanks also to Miss Adam for her work in coaching and managing the team.

This week is Book Week and the library staff are hosting a Book Fair for the enjoyment of the students. The Book Fair is always worth a visit as

Ms Mostyn and Mrs Robards always do an amazing job of decorating the hall in the theme of Book Week (Book Fair Garden). This week, be prepared to walk into a beautiful garden full of books. I can’t wait to see it! Previews will take place on Wednesday 20th August with students being able to purchase books and other items on Thursday 21st August. Parents, grandparents and friends of the school, are all welcome to view and purchase on these dates as well. Thanks to Ms Mostyn and Mrs Robards for their efforts in organising such a great event. Thank you ladies!

On Wednesday 6th of August, twelve Stage 3 boys made the trip to Taree with Miss Adam and some helpful parents to take part in the Buderus Rugby 7’s Competition. They faced teams from schools across the Manning Valley, coming up against the tough competition of Forster (4-nil) and Taree West (4-2). By the third game the boys were very much in their element, defeating Gloucester (2-1).

After weeks of safe tackle technique training, the boys were ready and raring. Despite the knocks, bruises and a few nail-biting moments for family members on the sideline, it was a great day for all involved. Well done team, you demonstrated fantastic sportsmanship and certainly did BCS proud!

On the 26th of June the Year 7 and Year 8 Bulahdelah Central School Debaters competed against Taree High School. The Year 7 team comprised of Laurie Bray, Akira Carloff, Lachlan Rutter, and Katie Nolan-Slattery. Their topic was “Healthy School Canteens are not necessary in schools”. Although the match went to Taree our debaters showed good form and were passionate about their arguments. Good job, Year 7 Debaters!

On the same day the Year 8 Debating Team which comprised of Akira Carloff, Katie Nolan-Slattery, Luke Rochester and Tim Smith debated against Taree High School. It was a heated match on the topic “Downloading Music is Theft”. The Year 8 team was in the affirmative argument. Both teams were evenly matched. The debate went to Taree High School. The adjudicator, Ms Hannah Lawton, praised our debaters for their skill and presentation.

On the 24th of July the Year 7 and Year 8 Bulahdelah Central School Debaters competed against Macksville High School. The Year 8 team comprised of Shannah Barrish, Akira Carloff, Katie Nolan-Slattery and Tim Smith. Their topic was “The Internet Should Be Filtered”.

The match went to Bulahdelah Central School! It was an outstanding win for our debaters. Throughout the debate they showed consistent form and were well organised. The students carried themselves with pride and were determined to win. Well done debaters!

Please continue to support our debaters through the Premier’s Debating Challenge. The next debate will be against Bulahdelah Central Year 7 and Bulahdelah Central Year 8. The date will be advised later.

In our world today heroes are only seen on screen. They have special abilities like shooting laser beams out of their eyes, super human

strength and let’s not forget the all tight fitting body hugging definitely eye catching, out of this world costumes.

It takes a lot of guts to prance around in one of those suits. Luckily there is an easier way to become a hero. Year 12 English Studies students Torey Blanch, Utah Edgerton, Bryce Hunkin, Odin Kemi, Solomon Keys, Joseph Murray, Meagan Terry and Dylan Watt hosted an out of uniform day and a sausage sizzle on the 13th of June to raise awareness about epilepsy.

What is Epilepsy?

Epilepsy is a common condition in our community and can develop at any age, regardless of gender or ethnic

group. Research suggests that 3-4% of the Australian population will develop epilepsy at some stage in their lives. Epilepsy is a disorder of brain function that takes the form of recurring convulsive or non-convulsive seizures. Epilepsy is not just one condition; rather it is a diverse family of disorders comprising many seizure types.

There were many heroes at Bulahdelah Central, primary students, secondary students and teachers. They all supported the cause and together we raised $501 dollars which was sent as a cheque to Epilepsy Australia. The overwhelming support resulted in a second sausage run, despite having some secondary students away on the day. One hundred sausages were sold out before the end of Lunch 1.

The students of Year 12 English Studies and I would like to say “Thank You!” Epilepsy - Time for a Cure! Year 12 English Studies Students and Mrs Rosyline Caro.
