The Easter Hat Parade

delivered again. Parents,

grandparents, aunts, uncles

and friends turned out in

force to view the visual

smorgasbord which was the

hat parade.

The creativity of hats was

astounding and I would like to

thank parents for your support.

The students love the parade and

they love having you there to

share in their excitement.

A real highlight was the

skipping performance of the Yr

5 “Skipaloonies,” under the

tuition of Mrs Fenning and Mrs

Murrell. They were a pleasure

to watch.

Congratulations to the winners of the raffle:

Woolworths Earn & Learn 2013

Towards the end of last term we were fortunate to have our items delivered from Woolworths Earn & Learn 2012 program. It was through the fantastic support of our parents and the local community that we were able to get lots of arts and craft materials which have been distributed across the school for all students to use. This year we will again be participating in the Woolworths Earn & Learn program and some parents have actually already started to collect the Earn and Learn stickers. We are hopeful that we can improve on last year’s results and purchase additional educational resources for our school – and all we need you to do is when you or your family and friends shop at Woolworths they collect the Earn & Learn stickers for the school. The promotion runs up until Sunday 9th June and you will get one Woolworths Earn & Learn Point for every $10 spent (excluding liquor, tobacco and gift cards). Please place the Woolworths Earn & Learn Points onto a Woolworths Earn & Learn Points Sheet (available from the store) and when it’s complete, the Points Sheet can be dropped into the collection box here at the school. Woolworth have informed us that the range of items that we can claim this year has been increased to include resources for Maths, English, Science and some fantastic fun supplies for Arts & Craft, Sport and for our library.

If you’d like to know more visit woolworths.com.au/earnandlearn. Thank you again for your support last year and we look forward to getting more resources through this program this year. Over-protective parents

Last week (3 May) the Sydney Morning Herald

published an article by Amy Corderoy. Amy is the

Health Editor and suggested Over-protective

parents are linked to teenage depression. She

highlighted recent research from the Macquarie

University which stated that teaching ''helicopter

parents'' and ''tiger mums'' to control their

emotions could be the key to preventing mental

illness in their children. The research noted that

the over-protective parenting happens when the

parents says 'OK, you don't have to do that'".

There is always a fine line between allowing your

child the freedom they need to develop the social

and emotional skills required to lead happy and

well-adjusted lives and being over-protective. I

see lots of examples of where the involvement of

parents in their child’s life is detrimental to that

child’s growth and development.

The sun was shining, the sky was blue and the students were pumped.

Everyone congratulated the organiser on the excellent conditions and

beautiful weather.

The carnival began with the long

distance events and then all age

groups left to compete on the field

and the track. One age group had a

very suspicious character by the

name of Benny Holt (pictured left)

doing his best to beat the boys who

were at least half his age, shoe size

and height. As the day progressed

and amazing times and distances

were recorded, the clouds started

to come in and eventually the rain

began to drizzle then, eventually,

fall. Events were suspended and

the carnival was postponed. As a

result students were called back to class

and the organiser was no longer

the hero of the day.

The remaining carnival events, 100 metre races

and relays were held on the last Friday of the term

in place of sport. The famous tug-of-war was a

huge success under the guidance of the tough

man himself, Brent Smith.

Eventually the results were compiled and our

Age Champions and winning house were

announced.

Thanks to everyone who helped organise and

run events. Athletics carnivals are always a fun

and important event on our school calendar,

and this one was no exception.

I hope everyone had a restful and

enjoyable holiday break. This term is much

shorter than first term but will be very busy with

sporting and drama excursions, including the

Taree Eisteddfod which our students are

currently attending.

Academically senior students are well into their

Preliminary and HSC courses and will be doing

major assessment tasks and exams this term. The

junior school will also be doing exams in Week 6

of this term.

I had the pleasure of attending the Bulahdelah

ANZAC march in the holidays and was very

impressed by our school captains and vice

captains who led the students in the march and

read part of the ceremony. It was great to see

many of our students marching proudly with their

families and their fellow students.

During the last week some of our Year 12

students travelled to Armidale to view the

University of New England and its potential as a

place for their tertiary studies.

They were accompanied by our Careers Adviser

Mr McKinley and by all reports conducted

themselves very well and gained valuable

information to help them make choices for 2014.

During the first two days of the term secondary

teachers were involved in workshops on NAPLAN,

improving student achievement, grading for Year

11 and preparation for implementing the new

curriculum in 2014.

Students in Years 7 and Year 9 will be

participating in the NAPLAN Literacy and

Numeracy tests next week on Tuesday,

Wednesday and Thursday mornings. Normal

classes will resume after recess.

Welcome back to Term 2. Although

only 9 weeks in duration, the term will

certainly be a very busy one, with many exciting

activities planned to engage and educate the

students. Some of the activities already planned

for this term include: Drumbala drumming

workshops, “Great Galaxies” performance,

athletics carnival, rugby league skill development

workshops and Discover Uni day, for our Year 6

students and their families. Student reports will

also be forwarded to parents, at the end of the

term.

Our athletics carnival will be held on Wed 22nd

May. All students K-6 will be expected to attend

and participate in the events, on the day, unless

they have a medical reason for not doing so. The

school should be notified in writing, if this is the

case. All family and friends are welcome to

attend the carnival to cheer on their child/ren. As

has been the case, in the past, we will require

parent assistance with time-keeping in the age

races. We really do appreciate and value your

assistance on carnival day and I know the

students do too. Put this date in your diary.

“Drumbala” commences on Monday 6th May and

runs for 7 weeks. We have 32 primary students

who will be participating in this program. I look

forward to the performance at the end of the 7

weeks, which will showcase the students’

learning.

All students, K-5, participate in weekly sport

sessions every Wednesday afternoon. K-2

students participate in activities which are

designed to improve gross motor and basic

movement skills. They also practice the basic

skills of throwing, catching and striking which are

fundamental to most games and sports.

Students in Years 3-6 participated in tennis,

basketball and softball during Term 1.

Throughout Term 2 they will be practicing

athletics and participating in rugby league skills

workshops 1 period per week for 5 weeks. It is

essential that students are dressed appropriately

for physical activity. We expect that all students

3-5 will now wear the school sports uniform to

school each Wednesday - blue and white soccer

shorts and sports shirt. Both the shorts and the

shirt are available from the school’s uniform

shop. If your child does not already have the

appropriate sports uniform, can I please request

that you purchase the uniform as soon as

possible so all students are prepared and

appropriately dressed for sport each Wednesday.

Suitable footwear of joggers, which lace up, is

also encouraged. Thanks in anticipation of your

cooperation with this matter.

Congratulations to our Zone X country

participants at the end of last term. We had

some excellent individual results and all students,

regardless of their placing, participated well on

the day.

Opportunity class placements for students

entering Year 5 in 2014 are now open. Parents

can apply online at

www.schools.nsw.edu.au/ocplacement . The

school does have paper copies if you don’t have

access to a computer at home. Enquiries can be

made at the front office. Online/paper

applications close on 17th May.

National Walk Safely to School Day will be held

this year on Friday 24th May. We encourage all

students to walk to school on this day, where

practical, to highlight road safety, good health,

public transport and the environment.

Library days for Primary:

Borrowing/Returns. Parents/Carers could you

please make sure that your child returns library

books on the relevant day as listed. The due date

of each library book is stamped in the back of the

library book. Students may also return and

borrow books in lunchtimes from Tuesday to

Friday.

Library Bags. We would also like to encourage

each primary student to have a library bag. This

helps to protect the books from food and drink

spills in school bags and also helps to minimise

the loss of books both at school and home. If

your child does not have a library bag the Library

has some old “Supre” bags which make excellent

library bags.

Scholastic Book Orders. Catalogues for

Scholastic come out twice a term. The due date

for orders is stamped on the front of the

catalogue and is also advertised in the

newsletter.

Student orders enable Bulahdelah Central to earn

20% of all sales in reward points which are then

used to purchase new resources for the library.

PRC. It is not too late to participate in the

Premier’s Reading Challenge. This will close on

1st September 2013 so please encourage your

child, if they are participating, to read at least 1

PRC book a week so they can fulfil their

requirements. We encourage all participants to

be adventurous in their reading and add as many

different types of books as they can to their

reading records. Permission notes are available

from the Library.

Simultaneous Read. The whole school will be

participating in the National Simultaneous

Storytime to be held on Thursday 23rd May. The

title of the book this year is “The Wrong Book” by

Nick Bland. This event is held to promote reading

and literacy by sharing this fun story.

The Woolworths Earn & Learn program is back! This community program enables schools and early learning centres throughout Australia to earn educational resources simply through the school community shopping at Woolworths. Last year, our program provided 720,000 pieces of educational equipment to more than 12,500 schools and early learning centres. Schools selected from thousands of different items through our program, highlighting how each school’s needs are different and how critical a breadth of range is.

From Monday 8th April until Sunday 9th June 2013, when you shop at Woolworths you will be given a Woolworths Earn & Learn Point. There’ll be one Woolworths Earn & Learn Point for every $10 spent, excluding cigarettes, liquor and gift cards. Collect these Woolworths Earn & Learn Points and your local school will be able to redeem these for educational resources. The Woolworths Earn & Learn program offers products to suit students of all ages. Schools and early learning centres can choose resources based on their unique needs, across every educational category possible, including mathematics and english resources, science equipment, arts & crafts materials, sports gear and more.

Walk Safely to School Day (WSTSD) is an annual, national event when all Primary School children will be encouraged to walk and commute safely to school. It is a Community Event seeking to promote Road Safety, Health, Public Transport and the Environment. It will be held throughout Australia on Friday 24th May 2013. The objectives of WSTSD are:

To encourage parents and carers to walk to school with primary school age children and reinforce safe pedestrian behaviour.

To promote the health benefits of walking and help create regular walking habits at an early age.

To ensure that children up to 10 years old hold an adult's hand when crossing the road.

To help children develop the vital road-crossing skills they will need as they become mature pedestrians.

To reduce the car dependency habits that are being created at an early age and which will be difficult to change as children become adults.

To promote the use of public transport. To reduce the level of air pollution created

by motor vehicles. To reduce the level of traffic congestion.
