“On Wednesday 27th of May Stage 3/4 went to the Great Aussie Bush Camp. The first activity was canoeing. We did lots of canoeing games. The first game was cowboys/cowgirls and cows and the cowboys/cowgirls had to chase the cows and once they got tipped the cows would be cowboys/cowgirls as well. Then we had afternoon tea and it was snow cones.

Then we went to our next activity called archery. Zane Walker was the champion of this group because he was the only person who hit a bull’s eye. After that we had dinner and it was spaghetti bolognaise with garlic bread. After dinner we did county fair and there were seven groups with four people in each group. The people in my group were Izabell, Sasha and Ruby. Our group was the bakery and we sold lamingtons and fairy bread. Then we went back to the logs to have a camp fire and then we went to bed. On Thursday we went to Jimmy’s Beach for a rainforest walk. Then we went to some sand dunes and we ran up and down the dunes. When we got back we had sandwiches for lunch.

In the afternoon we went to the dual flying fox and it went over the water. It was a bit scary but really fun. Then we had afternoon tea. Next we went to rock climbing and Ruby got the highest but Georgia, the instructor, got higher without climbing the rocks. Then it was dinner and we had rice with meat. Then after dinner we had ice-cream. On Thursday night we had a disco and we danced around. In the middle of songs they used this opera light that makes people’s moves look cooler. Then we played some fun games. Afterwards we sat around the campfire and had milk and cookies and Georgia told a story and then we went to bed. Finally the last day of camp, Friday, and it was time to pack our bags. After breakfast we had to pack up and clean up and then went to the giant swing. The giant swing could go really high. Then we did my favourite activity, the high ropes, where you had to walk on a wire and dodge some obstacles and hold onto hard things to hold. For lunch we had hot dogs and a can of drink. Some people went to the souvenir shop to pick up some reminders of their wonderful stay. Then, unfortunately, we had to put our suitcases on the bus and left to return to BCS”. Elise Miles

School Captain Process In consultation with staff, students and parents the process for representing BCS as a Captain or Vice-Captain was changed for implementation in 2015. The now rigorous process includes 20% of the score coming from student’s behaviour and participation within the school community over 18 months prior to the election, 10% from a written application, 10% from an interview, 10%

from their assembly speech and the remaining 50% from student and staff voting. The idea behind the change was to acknowledge the hardworking and achieving students rather than the process just being a popularity contest. Voting was conducted on Monday 1st June with results on Page 6 of this newsletter.

I want to become more involved within the school and test myself.

I would like the chance to represent Bulahdelah Central School as I am very passionate about what I believe in. I believe that with good leaders, any person, group or activity can be successful. I believe in equality, no matter who is involved.

In 2012 and 2013, I organised UNICEF Australia fundraisers. This involved speaking in front of a large crowd, contacting the council and president of my cycling club. I have been to many National junior track series where I have had to organise my team’s racing schedules and meals. I was primary school captain at Medowie Christian School. I would love to be school captain as I think I’m a good role model. I have strong morals and values. I would love to motivate and challenge my peers to help them achieve their full potential within their schooling.

My leadership ability is not a surprise as I have won the Long Tan Youth Leadership and Teamwork award and throughout my schooling I have been a positive role model. The side you haven’t seen is the ability I have in my work environment to take on the training of new staff members and in a supervisor role.

After all the evidence I have presented, I have not talked about why I want to be school captain and there are a few. I believe I would be a positive representative for the school not only within the school but in the wider community. This role would also be a confidence building role which could help me with my schooling and when I leave school. If I am to be truly honest it would hopefully help me in my future endeavours, such as Uni.

I was captain in Year 6 and the experience was great, learning and displaying leadership skills with the staff and my peers. Being captain will also look good on my resume for job interviews and it’s just a great experience.

I believe I have the attributes to become school captain and co-operate with other captains, teachers and students. I have experience in speaking in front of a crowd through debating and also working with many teams. Also being captain of my sporting house, previous tennis team and attending RYPEN (Rotary Youth Program of Enrichment) has showcased my determination and leadership ability. Being elected captain would be a wonderful experience and allow me to develop skills as a leader. I’m a well-rounded student which I believe is an important asset in being able to relate to and be a role model for the student body. I’d love the opportunity to be captain and represent BCS in a positive light.

Deb Gilbert has taken leave from her role as Deputy Principal Secondary to

take up the position of “Teacher Quality Advisor,” with the Department of Education and Communities, for the remainder of 2015. Deb will be working between the Forster and Port Macquarie Regional Offices but will spend most of her time visiting schools and supporting staff in gaining accreditation using the Australian Teaching Standards. This is an exciting professional opportunity for Deb, as well as our school. Deb will return in 2016 with a wealth of knowledge that she will be able to share with the staff. We wish Deb all the best in her new temporary role. She will do a fantastic job! Chris Gladys, Head Teacher TAS (Technological Applied Studies), will replace Deb as Deputy Principal for the remainder of the school year. I would like to thank Chris for stepping up and taking on a new challenge. I am looking forward to working with Chris. We are currently in the process of filling the Head Teacher TAS role. The captains for 2015-2016 have been announced. I would like to congratulate Jayden Lilley and Hannah-Rose Rietveld (Captains) and Brad Aldis, Joshua Collins, Emily Kirkpatrick and Amelia Follett (Vice Captains). What a great group of students they are. I was very impressed by all of them at their interviews.

I am confident that they will be fantastic representatives for our school and do a great job as leaders of the student body. What a wonderful turnout we had at our Grandparents’ and Friends’ day, last Friday. In excess of 100 grandparents attended the celebrations, which included an assembly and class items as well as a tree planting to mark the 50th anniversary of the opening of the primary school building. The morning tea, prepared by the Year 11 Hospitality students, was delicious. Thank you to all staff and support staff and students for your contributions to making the day as successful as it was. I’m pretty sure that Grandparents’ and Friends’ Day will become a regular event on the BCS calendar. 10 ways for parents to help teachers help their children learn (Continued from previous newsletters) 7. Thursday, 29th May, saw our Year 6 gifted and talented students from the Myall Learning Community schools attend a GATS’ (Gifted & Talented Students) activity day at Bulahdelah Central. The day’s objectives were that students would gain an understanding of the basic principles that makes a rocket launch and to follow a design process to solve a problem. Students were presented with a design challenge of building a model rocket using a plastic bottle that would be attached to a bicycle air pump that would provide its source of propulsion.

Within groups, students followed the design process and experimented with different ideas and tested prototypes, on their way to creating a suitable solution to the problem. The day ended with the students launching their ‘rockets’ and timing their flights to calculate the altitude and velocity. A special thank you goes to Mr Gladys and Mrs Graham for their help in acquiring resources, which made the day a great success. Brent Smith, TAS/VET/LOTE & Music Faculty.

REL. DEPUTY PRI. PRINCIPAL:

As we enter Week 8 of Term 2, it is exciting to reflect on the term and

upon the wide range of extra-curricular activities in which our

students have been given the opportunity to participate. During Week 6, the Primary Department had a strong representation in the Taree Eisteddfod. Mrs Angie Vella coached and supported the students, leading them to excellence. Further to our outstanding results, is the wide variety of creative categories in which students participated and achieved. We have several certificates, trophies and a monetary award to attest to their successes.

These will be presented at our next K-6 assembly on Monday, 15th June, Week 10, which is also a Merit Assembly for bronze, silver and gold award winners. Please claim the date and come along to celebrate our achievements with us. I look forward to students again showcasing their talents during Education Week (Term 3, Week 3, 27th - 31st July). Many students are already planning their topic for our annual public speaking competition. This year, Education Week events will also include a talent quest, with performers demonstrating real talent in singing, acting, magical acts and more. A note of information and invitation will be distributed to parents and community members before the end of the term.

Also during Week 6, it was my pleasure to accompany Stage 2 to the Great Aussie Bush Camp. After having to postpone our original camp dates, Bulahdelah Central School was extremely fortunate with beautiful warm, sunny days with a light sprinkle on our final morning that did not impact on our activities. Students were excited as the bush camp bus arrived to transport us and our large volume of luggage to the camp site as parents waved a sad farewell. Our accommodation was very satisfactory, with each set of rooms equipped with an ensuite. The schedule was busy (gruelling) with little 'down time' as we wore our young campers (and teachers) out. Some of the favourites were the evening activities of 'County fair' and the disco, fully equipped with the latest tunes and strobe lights. Daily adventures included the giant swing, where brave students pushed their personal achievement boundaries. The dual flying fox proved to be a big favourite for teachers and the high ropes saw some creative acrobatics. Student behaviour was exemplary, with students demonstrating camaraderie, teamwork, respect and friendship. They were fine ambassadors of Bulahdelah School and a pleasure to supervise over the three days. I extend a special thank you to Miss Linda Ottignon and Miss Alex Wills who also shared supervision duties for the three day, 2 night stay. Without your support, these special activities would not be possible. If student stories are a gauge of their enjoyment, then they all had a wonderful camp experience. As part of our extra-curricular activities, Bulahdelah Central School has been attending the Great Aussie Bush Camp for almost twenty years, at which time the Leyland Brothers owned and ran the camp program. This time frame probably explains why the camp experience now takes the whole weekend for teachers to recover. Since our first camps, the number of camp sites has grown, but also the range of activities and facilities that they can provide to school groups.

They are in the finishing stages of a state of the art construction on-site, that will be able to house approximately 600 students in the mess hall, along with camp offices and a conference room.

GRANDPARENTS’ & FRIENDS’ DAY:

On Friday, 5th June, Bulahdelah Central School Primary Department hosted our Grandparents’ and Friends’ Day. Well in advance of our celebrations, invitations were distributed to our K-6 families. We felt delighted and privileged to receive close to 110 acceptances to attend on the day. Proceedings began with a K-6 assembly, competently managed by primary school captains and showcasing class presentations which ranged from bucket percussion to poems and songs. The time afforded to classroom practice was evident as classes took the stage displaying their excellent skills in performance.

The assembly enjoyed the wonders of technology with an online story about Grandmas and a joint sing-a-long with an Australian favourite, 'Home Among the Gum Trees'. Grandparents’, friends and their children then moved into the middle school building which had been beautifully decorated with displays of students’ work. These works were all created around a grandparents and friends theme and reflected a keen engagement by our students to do their best. Children led Nan and Pop to their class displays and proudly showed off their own works of art. It was quite moving to see how carefully the grandparents’ and friends’ took those works of art and tucked them under their arms as a fond memory of their special day.

Mr Matt Hudson had set up a photography booth, and worked tirelessly to ensure each family captured a photographic memory of the day, which will be both printed and sent home digitally to each family. Ms Kylie Mather assisted by collecting email addresses and competently managing crowd control.

Mrs Elizabeth Smith and her very talented Year 11 class provided morning tea. Her students had arrived in the state of the art 'Trade Training Centre' prior to class time to work with Mrs Smith to ensure our grandparents’ and friends’ were well catered for, with delicious sandwiches and freshly baked scones with jam and cream. Her students, in full hospitality uniform, were excellent role models for the younger ones.

Page 13: BULAHDELAH CENTRAL SCHOOL A PRIDE School GREAT NEWS … · good on my resume for job interviews and its just a great experience. ... Keep adult disagreements among the adults concerned

13

Grandparents’ and friends’ were then invited into classrooms, where a range of activities were underway. No doubt the changes from their own school days were evident with each classroom equipped with an interactive whiteboard and a wide range of engaging literacy and numeracy resources. As our day was planned around the 50th anniversary of the opening of the J Block classrooms (under the COLA), we had a commemorative tree planting ceremony in our front tropical garden. A hardy white flowering magnolia was planted with pomp and ceremony, inviting all past students of Bulahdelah Central School and other guests to throw a handful of dirt into our magnolia garden and to ponder the next decades. How special to have so many contributors, including Saxyn and Jade Pickett's family of four BCS generations in attendance. How wonderful you were all here to commemorate and celebrate the day with us.

We also had our own Mrs Fenning who (it has been rumoured) was attending BCS in 1965 and has now returned as an educator here. The day was a great success and enjoyed by students, teachers and grandparents and friends alike. Such a complex range of events is only possible with excellent teamwork by all involved, including staff, students and guests. Thank you to all who attended. We hope you enjoyed your day as much as we did.

BCS DEPUTY PRINCIPAL:

It is with mixed emotion that I write this newsletter report

informing you that I will be starting work at our District Education Office for

the remainder of the year. While I will certainly miss the fantastic students and amazing staff at BCS, I am excited to have the opportunity to gain new training and experience as a Teacher Quality Advisor over a large number of diverse educational settings. Mr Chris Gladys will be relieving in the Deputy Principal position during my absence. Huge congratulations this fortnight to:

Luke Gray of Year 10 and Hannah-Rose Rietveld of Year 11 who have been selected for the Australian and New Zealand Association for the Advancement of Science (ANZAAS) course in ADELAIDE from 6th to 10th July 2015. It is exceptional to see students representing our school at such prestigious events.

Our Year 11 drama students who, last Friday, made it through to the final of the Hunter Institute of Mental Health Festival "Mindplay" drama competition. They were one of only 6 teams to make it to the final out of the original 17 teams who competed in the heats. The students involved in the performance were: Chloe Shultz, Kyle Shultz, Ruby Keys, McKelty-Rae Searle, Jaimii Gardner-Carroll, Kant Richardson, Shanelle Russell and Luana White, out Orthorexia Nervosa.

(Those who have an ‘unhealthy obsession’ with otherwise healthy eating may be suffering from ‘orthorexia nervosa,’ a term which literally means ‘fixation on righteous eating’).

Bradley Aldis, Joshua Collins, Jayden Lilley, Amelia Follett, Emily Kirkpatrick and Hannah-Rose Reitveld for putting themselves forward as nominees for the 2015/16 BCS School Captains’

Ellie Gooch and Jaxon Harris for representing BCS at Sydney Parliament House on Thursday 4th June.

Year 11 students, Olivia Gillett and Emily Kirkpatrick, who have been accepted into The Conoco Phillips Science Experience at the University of New England Armidale on the 19th - 21st January 2016.

I have also had the pleasure of nominating Karl Price and Ellie Gooch for a number of awards in the last week – fingers crossed for some big announcements coming up. Just confirmation that the students at BCS are working at an elite level!

Students’ reports are being prepared by staff following the half yearly exams and I encourage all parents/carers to use the information provided to discuss the progress of their child with their teachers. Certainly a partnership between staff, students and parents will ensure the best results for your child(ren). Best wishes for the remainder of the year.

I have decided to make a difference by taking part

in the Colour Run Newcastle and raising

money for charity.

I will be participating in the Colour Run on the 28th June 2015. I currently weigh 150kg+ so taking on a 5km course is not an easy feat so I would greatly appreciate your support. My chosen charity is "A Girl in her World", it is a charity dedicated to helping girls gain freedom through education, support and finance. Please support my efforts by making a secure online donation and a message of support. Donations can be made at the following website: http://thecolorrunnewcastle2015.gofundraise.com.au/page/MoncrieffH (or in person.) Girls….girls become women. They become mothers and grandmothers…they are leaders, teachers, mentors, gatherers…bringers of life, love and nurture.

‘A Girl & her world’ believes that no matter where she lives or which family she was born into, a girl was created for this process, built for it in all its beauty, strength, wonder and value.

Many, many, many girls around the world live with their wings clipped though they were meant to fly. They don’t go to school, they are married young and they are scarred as child-mothers giving birth. They are hungry and witness violence. They are limited by circumstances. They don’t dare to dream. Our world is robbed of the gift they were meant to be. Their uniqueness is never unwrapped or seen. ‘A Girl & her world’ is about a girl’s education, her family’s income, her health and wellbeing. They are about seeing her laugh and dream, succeed and have choices. For more information about this organisation go to: http://agirlandherworld.org/ Thanks so much for your support! Ms Heather Moncrieff.

Stage 5 Music

Music and Tune In are currently offered as elective subjects in Years 9 and 10 at BCS. These courses are aimed at developing students’ skills in performing, composing and listening through participation in a range of practical musical activities. Our Year 9 and 10 students have focused on developing their practical skills in an area of interest to them, whether it be singing or playing an instrument and they are currently working on preparing assessment performances. To cater for individual musical interests, the students have selected their own performance pieces which include drum solos, piano duets, keyboard and electric guitar solos and group vocals.

Through experimentation with sounds and musical ideas, the students are also working on creating their own compositions and songs. Improvisation techniques, along with the use of musical computer programs, are being used to create, notate and edit their compositions. The compulsory topic of Australian Music is studied in both the Tune In and Music Courses. Students also individually select other topics of interest to them throughout the course. For further information or enquiries about the study of music and LOTE (Languages Other Than English) at BCS, please contact the class teachers Ms Wendy Parsons (Music), Ms Georgina Cunich (LOTE), or Head Teacher TAS, Mr Chris Gladys.

HSC Music Workshop Year 11 and 12 Music students recently participated in a workshop lead by Mrs Judy Ingram from Gloucester High School. This was aimed at improving their skills in preparation for the HSC examination. During the day, students presented performances in front of an experienced HSC marker, who gave them feedback on their presentations. Vocalists also learnt breathing techniques and exercises to extend their vocal range. A session on the written exam, including an explanation of the HSC marking process, was also included during the day. Students were provided with detailed notes to assist in their preparation for this exam.

Yrs 9 /10 Elective Chinese This year our students in Years 9 and 10 have been starting conversational Chinese around greetings, personal information and shopping. During Term 1 the class went to the Chinese restaurant at the Golf Club for lunch and tested their skills in using chopsticks. Through class time they have completed assessments on tourist attractions and they have been learning how to recognise different Chinese characters through a variety of methods including accessing online programs to test themselves. Students have been challenged in learning how to write the characters and ensure that they are following the correct stroke order. The class will be expanding their writing with calligraphy lessons scheduled in the coming fortnight. In the next few weeks the students will have the opportunity to travel to Sydney for the day to visit the Chinese Gardens and Chinatown to learn more about Chinese culture and its influences in Australia.

WHAT IS VANESSA DOING NOW?

Vanessa Manaois (Student of BCS 2010) left Bulahdelah Central to further her studies. Her love of cooking led her to several disciplines, including baking, pastries

and various cuisines.

She is also a fine sculptress and has found combining her carving skills and her chocolate making a satisfying venture. How amazing are these pictures? Hard to believe they have been carved out of chocolate. Chocolate lovers may say “What a Waste”!
