Prez Sez...ALBUQUERQUE Donations vs Sweepstakes? I belong to several organizations in addition to the NM Watercolor Society. All of them collect dues, and some of them also solicit donations. Although the Society has a mechanism to accept donations, as long as I’ve been a member we’ve never formally solicited them. And there are no plans to start now! Some of those organizations also periodically offer their members opportunities to enter sweepstakes by paying a small entry fee. I’ve always found those opportunities to be attractive—for a small ‘donation’ I get a chance to win a new car or other attractive prizes. Consider this a ‘donation with benefits’. But, no, we’re not going to initiate a NMWS Sweepstake, either. However, we do offer something that is almost as good through the three exhibitions we sponsor each year. Just think: For a small entry fee artists have the chance to compete for cash prizes and donated merchandise. Do you have a painting or two that you don’t think have a chance? Just go ahead and add them to your other entries (or enter it as your first painting) and consider those entry fees to be a donation to the Society. And, who knows, you might actually be selected for a prize. Some personal observations: The first painting that I had selected for a show was what I thought was the third-best of my three entries. And a year ago I had two paintings selected that were not selected when I entered the same paintings in the previous show. No one can account for the varying opinions of our exhibition judges, and as the old saw said, “You make zero percent of the shots you don’t take.” The entry period for our Spring Exhibition closes on March 24th. What are you waiting for?Slate of Officer Candidates. Elsewhere in Brushstrokes you will find a list of the slate of candidates for our seven elected officers. We will conduct the election at the April meeting, and their one-year terms begin on June 1st. Membership. The Board voted to begin in calendar year 2018 to collect a $5 late fee for membership renewals that are not paid by March 1st of the current membership year. Annual membership payments are due by January 30th, and this new policy provides a 30-day grace period before any late fees are assessed. Don’t forget that current membership status is required to enter our members-only exhibitions.Keep on painting!

SOUTHERN CHAPTER Spring? We love it! It is almost here. The Spring Equinox will be at 4:28 am on Monday, March 20. Here in New Mexico we are on Mountain Time (as you know), but there is always an adjustment when we have to change all our watches and clocks. Stay alert to that important change.Fabulous happenings will come quickly in March. Just yesterday here in Las Cruces I noticed an abundance of daffodils. Quite a few in my own backyard. For me, daffodils bring memories of my youth in North Carolina. So sentimental. I love it there. It is important to stay aware, wide awake, and observant. Keep looking as the earth presents a beautiful show. Color will soon surround us. Sometimes in the most unexpected places. There is no excuse for subject matter to paint. So do your best work, Artists. In a matter of tradition…remember Spring Break? This is a USA phenomenon and tradition. And not new. This all began in the 1930’s and has spread to most all Western cultures. My own thinking is why not? Anything to give one a reason to celebrate, gather, and enjoy one another. We can increase the Spring fun by gathering artist’s friends for lunch and/or a paint out. In other words, play your heart out.Now that I have coached you into a mood, be willing to accept new things, people, and places. Let us broaden our thinking to try new adventures and people. Try a few new subjects. Take a class. Go for new colors, subjects and techniques. Painting around, and with new friends, will surely provide inspiration.Along with creating your best art, you will surely notice I am encouraging you to fully enjoy Spring. Be sure to find time to play. Simply love the world we are fortunate enough to have in wonderful New Mexico. Think positively and become even more that you ever believed.Best wishes and blessings.Barbara Lewis DeanSC President2016-2017

Southern Chapter Spring Show UPDATEJuror Lian Quan Zhen chose 25 images to hang in the 2017 SC Spring Membership Show which had the theme “A Moveable Feast.” The show will hang April 14-August 6 at the New Mexico Farm & Ranch Heritage Museum in Las Cruces. Forty-eight members submitted 72 works; the 25 pieces chosen came from 20 members. That means fewer than half of entrants had their work chosen. Ten of those not chosen were paintings by NMWS signature members. Five works chosen were from new members. What does all this data tell us? Well, the venue is small, so there’s room for only about 25 pieces. In Las Cruces, we have to scramble for professional venues and not all of them are large. And remember, the choices were made by one person, at one moment in time. We might re-submit our “failures” to another exhibit and win best of show! Some of these so-called “Failures” are shown, and larger images can be seen on the SC blog http://nmwssc2016.phanfare.com/14423971 and they are really lovely, so if yours were among these, don’t give up.

From the Artist:“As an artist, it is “light” that is the constant narrative in my work. So when I am deciding on what it is I wish to paint, I concentrate less on specific objects – places or things – and more on the strength of a strong abstract value composition of darks and lights. But while my workshops cover a lot of issues of technique and paint application of course, it is in helping artists to identify what it is that most inspires them to find their own unique style and artistic voice that each of us alone has - that is my real aim.”

David WelchWatercolors in the Vineyards: June 20-28. 2017 Limit: 8 artists. Chapter NewsAlbuquerque Chapter, FEBRUARY 4Well known artist and member Todd Tibbals provided the program for the February meeting of the Albuquerque Chapter. Todd is a lifelong artist who received his formal art education at the Corcoran School of Art, who is well-known for his strong compositions that lead the viewer skillfully around his watercolors. He gave a Power Point presentation about how his four years in the Peace Corps in the 1960’s in Peru and Ecuador influenced his painting style. Although you wouldn’t say he has an easily-recognizable style in his paintings, he has an eclectic, Renaissance approach. He considers himself a shapemaker (with a heavy dose of light to dark emphasis), rather than a fancy brush technician.

Southern Chapter, February 12The program for the Southern Chapter was a demonstration of NMWS website navigation by Rachel Murphree.

In addition, SC members have participated in two exhibits: “For the Love of Railroad Architecture” in conjunction with “For the Love of Art Month.” This exhibit features 17 paintings, all of which can be viewed on the SC blog atRR ARCH. The opening reception was Feb 1, and the show will hang through March at the Las Cruces Railroad Museum. They also have paintings hanging in an Alternative Spaces show at Cafe de Mesilla. This show will hang from February 1 - March 31, 2017. Do stop by and see the show and support the Cafe.

. PaintoutAlbuquerque: On Feb 11, a group of 10 enthusiastic painters enjoyed a short period of delightful weather and the wonderful hospitality and spectacular views at the home of Sandra and Richard Allen for a paintout of the Sandias. At the table enjoying our unexpected delicious lunch are Jude Rudder, Sally Hudak-Logan and Jean Fetner. In the background are Sandra Allen, Jay Leutwyler, Lynne Peckinpaugh and Daniel Willard. Daniel came prepared for how warm and sunny it was that day!

Karin Pitman will be leading the March paintout. We will meet on the patio of Kelly’s Brew Pub at 9 am on March 11. The address is 3222 Central Avenue SE. Karin Pitman, NMWS, will give a short demo including some very basic principles of one-point perspective. People may choose to stay on Kelly’s patio to work, or wander along Central Avenue and stay as long asthey want. You may want to bring a chair and/or easel if you plan to wander. Various subjects in the area include Nob Hill Shopping Center, storefronts of a variety of shops, a John Gaw Meem territorial style Church, and plenty of cars and people (if not the construction of ART). Painters can stay as long as they want, but Karin will need to leave by about 11:30am. Please let Karin know if you are planning to attend by Friday the 10th at 5 pm (there may be a handout), [email protected] or 270-2380.

Southern Chapter: Carolyn Bunch will be our host at her former Adobe Patio Gallery, 1765 Avenida de Mercado in Mesilla at 2 pm.

USEFUL ADVICE The internet is an amazing resource for artists. Member Barbara McGuire found this wonderful list of 75 artists blogs, ranked by “Feedspot” for their favorites. Not all watercolor, but some wonderful demos, suggestions, guidance and inspiration. Check them out at http://blog.feedspot.com/painting_blogs/

USEFUL DEVICE from Pat and Peter Rios

One requirement of all of the NMWS shows (and many others) is that the peak of the wire for the painting is a specific distance below the top of the frame (for NMWS, 3.5”). Peter has produced a nifty device that will help make sure your painting meets this criterion, and has offered to provide one to anyone who wants one for a very nominal price. More details to be provided by email soon!

MEET THE BOARD MEMBERS Southern Chapter Treasurer: Sue Ann Glenn

Sue Ann says: “I have served as the Treasurer for the NMWS southern chapter for the last 3 years. It’s a wonderful way to be a part of an organization and contribute as a volunteer. “I joined the watercolor society shortly after my husband and I moved to Las Cruces from Michigan in 2011. “I have a degree in Art Education from Central Michigan University and taught elementary art for 15 years in a large Michigan school system.“After 33 years of teaching, I retired and since then have focused on watercolors. The mountains, cactus and wild life have been a real inspiration for me to paint. My style is representational realism for the most part. I’m drawn to textured objects, weathered wood, feathers, fur and just plain detail!“I’m very proud to have achieved NMWS Signature status in the fall of 2015.”

Tips ‘n Trix

February gave us a brief taste of Spring this year. Maybe you were inspired to grab your camera or painting materials and go outside to collect some painting ideas for the snowy days sure to return. “ What to paint?” is a question always scurrying around in the back of our minds. Many of us have too many possibilities, which can lead to a lack of focus and inaction, but many more of us just can’t remember what fired our imagination last time we saw something that made us want to paint it. One way to keep or find your focus is to make an Artistic Vision Board that will help you see trends in what catches your interest. If you’re not sure what a Vision Board is just Google “vision board how to” and you’ll get lots of options.

To start an artistic interest Vision Board carry your phone or digital camera with you and quickly take a photo of subjects/scenes/color palettes/textures/etc. that pique your interest as you go through your day. Capture those ideas right when they hit you. If you’re really organized, take a few notes in your sketchbook capturing your initial ideas around a particular photo or idea you collected. When you’re browsing the Internet, download pictures or new art technique ideas you like into a “Vision Board” folder on your computer. Go through those old sepia and black and white photos of your ancestors and imagine their stories as subject matter. Look at the small still lifes in your home that grew from your collections of things you love. Do they spark any memories from which you might paint? Can you capture in color and line the feeling those objects engender?

As you search, remember that the subject actually picks you. You paint best that which speaks to you. You see it and respond from your own mindset and unique combination of experiences. The paradox of the search, as stated by Eugene Delacroix is “Everything is a subject; the subject is yourself. It is within yourself that you must look and not around you…The greatest happiness (is) to reveal to others, to study oneself, to paint oneself continually in (one’s) work.” If you do the hard homework of inner exploration, trying to find and focus your unique interest and viewpoint and how to express it, you shouldn’t have any trouble with originality. There has only been one of you in the history of mankind--only one with your life experiences and only one combination of your head, heart, and hand from which your vision flows. Don’t wait for that imaginary perfect painting subject, just be present to what draws your attention in your daily routine and archive it somehow. The next step is to go back through your vision collection and look for trends in subject, color, lighting conditions, etc. Print out a good sampling of the things that caught your eye and collage them onto a poster-sized backing piece and put it where you’ll see it during the day. Study your collection. You should see some trends.

Here’s another way to employ the Vision Board concept to keep your 2017 artistic goals clear and always have what-to-do-next prompts in sight. Create a one or two-page visual outline you can put up on your wall that captures your higher level artistic goals for the year. This could include workshops to take (write out the “why”), skills to practice, new materials or styles to explore, areas of your resource collection you want to “mine,” shows to enter, subjects to photograph, etc. Don’t forget to add one or two relaxing activities that tend to release your right brain and pump the creative juices.

With concrete goals captured in colorful graphics right in front of you in your art making space, you’ll be more focused. Focus will help move you through blocks and lead you to more success.

Get your vision in focus and go for it!

NMWS Meeting Info:ALBUQUERQUE PROGRAMS:

March 4th. After our 10:30 business meeting at the Albuquerque Museum (once again, in the AUDITORIUM), Linda Grace will give a presentation/demo. Linda has taught art on cruise ships. Her philosophy about painting is that it should be fun and should reflect the individual painter’s own style. Our members may remember Linda’s award winning city landscapes from MasterWorks exhibitions. Linda’s demo will be on painting a still life of pears, a subject she returns to when she feels the need to reset her painting skills. She will also show some of her city landscapes to discuss the steps to accomplish mood and loose style in the paintings.

April 1st. Michelle Tsosie Sisneros will be our artist presenter for our April 1st NMWS meeting at the Albuquerque Museum. Michelle is an artist who carries on the rich Native American painting tradition, as she is descended from the line of Helen Hardin and Pablita Velarde, with ties to Santa Clara Pueblo, the Navajo Nation, and Laguna Pueblo. In addition to being a painter, Michelle is a jeweler and a potter. Michelle has worked with both watercolor and acrylics and has been a professional artist for over 36 years. Michelle will demonstrate her own particular style, which incorporates a flat, two dimensional way of painting with abstract and surrealist influences, of subjects including Pueblo women, Yeis, clowns, deer, and landscapes. You may have seen Michelle’s work in the SWAIA Indian Market. Michelle’s demo will begin after the 10:30 business meeting. NOTE: This meeting will include the annual elections of officers. WHO WE ARE AND WHAT WE ARE ABOUT

• The New Mexico Watercolor Society was founded in 1969 as a statewide chapter of the Southwestern Watercolor Society of Dallas, TX. In January 1970, the New Mexico Watercolor Society became an independent entity with 501(c)(3) status.

THE PURPOSE OF THE SOCIETY IS THE ELEVATION OF THE STATURE OF WATERCOLOR AS AN ART MEDIUM AND THE EDUCATION OF THE PUBLIC AS TO THE SIGNIFICANCE OF WATERCOLOR AS

AN IMPORTANT CREATIVE, PERMANENT PAINTING MEDIUM. THE ULTIMATE GOAL IS TO MAKE NEW MEXICO KNOWN NATIONALLY FOR ITS WATERCOLORISTS.

• Signature status is attained when a member has been accepted in five qualifying juried shows with a maximum of two pieces accepted per year. The initials “NMWS” can then be used with the member’s signature.

• The New Mexico Watercolor Society is a member of the Western Federation of Watercolor Societies (WFWS).

Spotlight: Debora Dudden Debora says: “I lived in California for most of my life until one day we up and moved our family to Hong Kong. Two weeks to pack and my life was changed forever. New friends, new culture, and all the free time to discover myself. One of those wonderful discoveries was art. I dabbled in about every media but mostly in pencil and acrylic. “After five years in Asia, we relocated to New Mexico. I had only ever done one watercolor but, remembered enjoying it. “So began my journey in watercolor. I’ve had some wonderful teachers here. Carol Carpenter, Bud Edmondson, Frank Fuchs, and my mentor and teacher Jae Drummond. “Most of my paintings start with an idea and a trip outdoors to photograph some flowers or still life. I love to play with the lighting as it touches my setting. Once a photo inspires me, the real fun begins. With a board on my lap, loads of water on the board, the brushes begin dipping into the paint. There is literally nothing more peaceful or exciting to me.”
