TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — All peoples called by God will receive the gift of the Spirit if they repent and are baptized (Acts 2:14a, 36-41). PRAYER TO OUR LADY, HEALTH OF THE SICK DURING THE CORONAVIRUS PANDEMIC
O Mary, You shine continuously on our journey as a sign of salvation and hope. We entrust ourselves to you, Health of the Sick, who, at the Cross, united with Jesus’ pain, keeping your faith firm. You, Salvation of the Roman people, know what we need, and we trust that you will provide for those needs so that, as at Cana of Galilee, joy and celebration may return after this moment of trial. Help us, Mother of Divine Love, to conform ourselves to the will of the Father and to do what Jesus tells us. He who took our suffering upon Himself, and burdened Himself with our sorrows to bring us, through the Cross, to the joy of Resurrection. Amen. We seek refuge under your protection, O Holy Mother of God. Do not despise our pleas — we who are put to the test — and deliver us from every danger. O glorious and blessed Virgin.

Message from Father Robert: Evelyn Waugh was a famous British author who is well known for his novel Brideshead Revisited, and as one story goes, he was asked one day if he considered that his greatest work and he said no. He considered Helena, a short historical novel about the life and adventures St. Helena, as his greatest. Forgive me if I reveal some spoilers for those who have not read it, but the best and most dramatic part of the book is when St. Helena finds the True Cross. In the book when she finds the Cross she declares that she “discovered what it was God had chosen for her to do and did it.” She eventually brings part of the Cross to Rome along with the nails, and some other relics. The novel does not come just from the mind of Mr. Waugh; there is another story that dates back to the fourth century that was repeated by St. Ambrose, St John Chrysostom, and other historians. The bishop of Jerusalem at the time ordered that a dying woman be brought to touch the three crosses that were discovered, and after touching the third cross was healed. The commemoration of this event is today May 3rd, a date requested by St. Helena herself right before she died so that all Christians throughout the world can celebrate the Finding of the Cross. We are reminded of the reality of the Cross in today’s Readings, and encouraged to find Him who hung on the Cross so that we may be healed by Christ and receive life in abundance through Him.
One of the ways that we seek out Christ is through prayer and on Saturday, April 25th Pope Francis wrote a letter to the whole Church encouraging us in these challenging times to pray the Rosary during the month of May. In many ways, it is also a providential letter since a few days after its publication the Church celebrated the feasts of St. Louis Marie de Montfort and St. Catherine of Sienna. Both of these saints are associated with the Rosary. St. Louis Marie de Montfort wrote the book “The Secret of the Rosary” and diligently promoted praying it as well, and if you have ever seen an image of Our Lady of the Rosary or Our Lady of Pompeii, St. Catherine of Sienna is the one receiving the Rosary from Our Lady. Along with Pope Francis, it seems that heaven is encouraging us to pray the Rosary during these times. May God bless you, and may the Peace of the Risen Christ live in our hearts.

Consideró a Helena, una breve novela histórica sobre la vida y aventuras de Santa Elena, como su más grande. Perdóname si revelo algunos spoilers para aquellos que no lo han leído, pero la mejor y más dramática parte del libro es cuando Santa Elena encuentra la Verdadera Cruz. All Masses are suspended until further notice. Masses will be televised on the Catholic Faith Network (Optimum Channel 29/137, Verizon FiOS TV 296, & Spectrum 162/471) and available online at: www.catholicfaithnetwork.org/ or www.saintpatrickscathedral.org/live.
People who devoutly attend the liturgy according to the indications of the Church, at the moment of receiving the Eucharist, pray to God, you will receive it spiritually. Communion can only be given as viaticum.
Our church will open during Mass hours for personal prayer, Monday - Saturday 9 a.m.-12 noon, Sunday 8 a.m.-2 p.m. The intentions previously made for each mass will be offered privately by the priests.
The religious education program will remain suspended. These restrictions include rescheduling Confirmation, First Communion, First Confessions, etc. Catholic Elementary Schools in the Archdiocese of New York have extended closure through May 22nd. Baptisms, weddings, funerals have been suspended during this time. In regard to funerals, please have your
funeral director contact us. Confessions can be heard with caution at a distance of 6 feet. We will continue to administer the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick as needed with possible
restrictions Pastoral care over the phone is available. As this emergency situation evolves, we will update the instructions we receive from the Archdiocese. But
the important thing is to use the means wisely and not to be infected with fear and even less with panic, but rather to trust in the divine providence of our Heavenly Father.
