From the Pastor

Some months ago in a homily I asked for a show of hands as to how many in the congre-gation wanted to go to Heaven. As you can imagine the response was unanimous. But then I asked how many wanted to go this instant and the response was, well, less enthusi-astic. I know we all want to go to Heaven when our time on earth is done, but is seems few of us feel ready for the journey home as we currently are. If we truly understood the nature and beauty of Heaven we would all beg the Lord to bring us there now. Jesus said to his disciples: "Do not let your hearts be troubled. You have faith in God; have faith also in me. In my Father's house there are many dwelling places. If there were not, would I have told you that I am going to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back again and take you to myself, so that where I am you also may be. Where I am going you know the way." Jesus has bodily departed from us not to abandon us but to get ready our rooms in Heaven, to prepare a place for all those who are faithful to him. When the time is right, he will descend again to earth, this time in all of his glory and splendor, and will bring us home. This thought should bring us great comfort, not fear. Knowing that Christ is com-ing to collect us should make us swoon with ecstasy if we take the time to think on this mystery. Jesus goes on to say that he is "the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Fa-ther except through me." Jesus is the way, not a way, but the way. There is no salvation except through Christ. Jesus is the truth. If the beliefs we hold are not in line with the teachings of Jesus, they are lies and will lead us to doom. Finally, he is the life. As the scriptures tell us all were made through him and in him, he holds all creation in being. Without Jesus there is no life. But with him is firmness of belief, truth, and the guarantee of eternal life and happiness. If I might suggest a good read, perhaps a bit theological, but good nevertheless it would be Life Everlasting by Fr. Reginald Garrigou-Lagrange. Fr. Lagrange taught Pope St. John Paul II when he was in school and is an incredible author. This book takes readers on a journey through the nature of the human soul and what awaits us in the world to come: Death and Judgment, Heaven, Hell, and Purgatory. Last I looked it was $.99 on Kindle and about $14 for the paperback version but can be found for free on some websites. In light of Jesus' words in the gospel it will really help put things, the last things, in greater per-spective.
