Expansion Joints
Crucial Components of Expansion Joints
Metal expansion joints (they also called compensators) are compensating elements for thermal expansion and relative movement
in pipelines, containers and machines. They consist of one or more metal bellows, connectors at both ends, and tie rods that
depend on the application. They are differentiated according to the three basic types of movement: axial, angular and lateral
expansion joints.
Bellows (Elastic vessels): The Built-up of a bellows is complex in that it involves an evaluation of pressure capacity, stress due to
deflection, fatigue life, spring force and squirm. The determination of an acceptable design is further complicated by the numerous
variable involved such as diameter, material thickness, pitch , height, number of piles, method of reinforcement , manufacturing
technique , material type and heat treatment. In many cases the design for particular application will involve of conflicting
requirement.
Control Rod: Devices, usually in the form of rods or bars, attached to the expansion joints assembly whose primary function is to
distribute the movement between the two bellows. Control rods are not designed to restrain bellows pressure thrust.
Limit rod: Device, usually in the form of rods or bars, attached to the expansion joint assembly whose primary function is to restrict
the bellows movement range (axial, lateral and angular) during normal operation.
Tie Rods: Devices usually in the form of rods or bars, attached to the expansion joints assembly whose primary function is to
continuously restrain the full bellows pressure thrust during normal operation while permitting only lateral deflection. Angular
rotation can be accommodated only if tie rods are used located 90 opposed to the direction of rotation.
Cover: A device used to provide limited protection of the exterior surface of the bellows of an expansion joint from foreign objects
or mechanical damage. A cover is sometimes referred to as shroud.
Equalizing and reinforcing rings: Devices used on some expansion joints fitting snugly in the roots of the convolutions. The primary
purpose of these devices is to reinforce the bellows against internal pressure.
Flanged Ends: The ends of expansion joints equipped with flanges for the purpose of bolting the expansion joint to the mating
flanges of adjacent equipment or piping.
Internal Sleeve: A device which minimizes contact between the inner surface of the bellows of an expansion joint and the fluid
flowing through it, these devices have also been referred to as liners or baffles.
Motion indicators: Device attached to an Expansion Joint for the purpose of indicating the movement of the Expansion Joints.
These devices are useful in determination if the piping system is behaving as planned and if actual movements being imposed upon
the bellows are within the limits of the original design criteria.
Pipe alignment guide: A pipe alignment guide is the form of framework fastened to some rigid part of installation which permits the
pipe line to move freely only along the axis of the pipe.
Purge connections: Purge connections where required, are usually installation at the sealed end of each internal sleeve of an
expansion joint for the purpose of injecting a liquid or gas between the bellows and the internal sleeve to keep the area clear of
erosive and corrosive media or solid that could pack the convolution.
Stabilizer: A device, internally or externally attached to the expansion joint assembly, whose primary function is to increase the
stability of a universal Expansion joint assembly.
Weld Ends: The ends of an expansion joints equipped with pipe suitably beveled for welding to adjacent equipment of piping.
Types of bellows expansion joints
Single Bellows Assembly
For absorption of extension/compression low-pressure piping, exhaust piping, ducts, flues, etc. and for vibration absorption
of suction and exhaust pipes of engines and blowers, and at the inlet and outlet of pumps, Operating Pressure range - 0.1MPa
to 0.3Mpa.

Single Reinforced Type:
Reinforce Expansion a joint is designed for high internal pressure applications. The Expansion Joint is designed with
reinforcement rings located around the outside of the convolution in order to avoid bellows being forced out of shape due to
high pressure. Mainly used in chemical, Steam, hot water and other pipelines, operating pressure range 0.2MPa to 10MPa

Universal Type:
A Universal Expansion Joint is one containing two bellows joined by a common Connector for the purpose of absorbing any
combination of the three basic movements: Axial movement, Lateral deflection and angular rotation. Universal Expansion
Joints are usually furnished with control rods to distribute the movement between the two bellows of the Expansion Joint and
stabilize the common connector; this definition does not imply that only a Universal Expansion Joint can absorb combined
movement. General operating pressure rage 0.2MPa to 2Mpa

Hinge Type:
A hinged Expansion Joint contains one bellows and is designed to permit angular rotation in one plane only by the use of a pair
of pins through hinge plates attached to the Expansion Joint ends. The hinges and hinge pins must be designed to restrain the
thrust of the Expansion Joint due to internal pressure and extraneous forces, where applicable. Hinged Expansion Joints
should be used in sets of two or three to function properly. Mainly used in Steam, cold water, hot water and other pipelines,
operating pressure range 0.2MPa to 20MPa

Gimbal Type:
A gimbal expansion joint is designed to permit angular rotation in any plane by the used of two pairs of hinges affixed to a
common floating gimbal ring. The gimbal ring, hinges and pins must be designed to restrain the thrust of the Expansion Joint
due to internal pressure and extraneous forces, where applicable. Mainly used in Steam, cold water, hot water, high-pressure
steam, warm water, high-pressure gas, and other pipelines operating pressure range 0.2MPa to 20MPa

Straight Pressure Balanced Type
An in-line pressure balanced Expansion Joint is designed to absorb axial and/or lateral movement while restraining the
pressure thrust by means of tie devices Interconnecting the line bellows with outboard compensating bellows also subjected
to line pressure. Each bellows set is designed to absorb the axial movement and usually the line bellows will absorb the lateral
deflection. This type of Expansion Joint is used in a straight run of piping. Mainly used in Steam, Oil, cold blast, steam, and
other pipelines operating pressure range 0.2MPa to 10Mpa

Rectangular Metallic Bellows Expansion Joints
Specializing in the production of cigarette wind pulverized coal pipeline compensator series products. Smoke wind pulverized
coal pipeline compensator mainly has: metal circular compensator metal rectangular right-angle compensator rectangular
rounded compensator (CE waveform) circular 3d compensator 3d ripple compensator (A) 3d ripple compensator (B) three-

External Pressure Type:
Externally pressurized expansion joints are capable of absorbing large axial movements at higher pressures due to their
bellows being pressurized externally. Absorbing large axial movements require high number of convolutions and this, in turn,
increases the bellows instability. By pressurizing the bellows externally, while keeping the unit pressurized internally, bellows
column instability problem is eliminated. This type of design also protects the bellows from outside medium, any possible
damage during shipping, handling and installation, and from high flow velocities. Mainly used in Steam, hot water, warm
water, and other pipelines operating pressure range 0.2MPa to 1.5 Mpa
