Cheaper than buying a new model EKM
Depends on existing installation, to be assessed the entity of the required changes
Not recommended, requires high cost interventions for new materials and labour
Interventions typically required by the update:
A mechanical intervention on the monitor (mechanical modification of one or more parts, replacing or adding components)
B electrical changes on the monitor (JB modification or replacement, wiring of new components)
C mechanical intervention on the electrical panel (drilling, add / remove buttons and indicators)
D intervention on the electrical panel (add / remove electrical or electronic components, new wiring)
E additional wiring between the control panel and monitors (likely to add additional wires to existing installation)
F software update of the PLC or other electronic components of the control panel This pattern is indicative, the cost impact of each update is roughly calculated, taking into account the average cost
of the materials used for the update (mechanical and electronic components) and an estimated count of the hours of
labour needed to make changes.
For a more detailed economic evaluation is always recommended to contact KCA, providing details about the existing
installation in the field, and any special requests of the customer to consider being updated.
This scheme is valid only for updates on panels IP55, for Atex installations a new control panel is mandatory, no
modification on existing equipment is allowed.

GENERAL INFO
A control panel is always required to correctly operate one or more monitor. Inside every
control panel are installed all the electro-mechanical components useful for movement as
well as the needed electronics in case of monitors with some level of automation.
Each panel is normally designed to accept one or more SPDT contact coming from an
external device (normally installed by customer) that act as a trigger for alarm detection.
In case of monitors with automated features, under particular configuration, this contact
starts the automated routines.
Every control panel has a minimum degree of ingress protection IP55, that allows it to be
installed either indoor or outdoor. When installed outdoor, it is recommended to have a
roof on top of it, mainly to avoid paint discoloration or other cosmetic defect.
Standard safety equipment on all panels: emergency mushroom pushbutton, power on
indicator, and general fault indicator for each monitor.
Each indicator provides a command or identification plate in Italian or English.
These models of ECP are suitable only for safe areas: see Section D for control panels
certified to be installed in Atex environment.

GENERAL INFO
A control panel is always required to correctly operate one or more monitors. Inside every control
panel are installed all the electro-mechanical components useful for movement as well as the
needed electronics in case of monitors with some level of automation.
Standard material is forged aluminum alloy: it is possible to have on request a stainless steel
enclosure, but normally this type of metal boxes have a lower degree of explosion protection.
Each panel is normally designed to accept one or more SPDT contact coming from an external
device (normally installed by customer) that act as a trigger for alarm detection. In case of
monitors with automated features, under particular configuration, this contact starts the
automated routines.
Every control panel has a minimum degree of ingress protection IP55, that allows it to be
installed either indoor or outdoor. When installed outdoor, it is recommended to have a roof on
top of it, mainly to avoid paint discoloration or other cosmetic defects.
Each panel is also classified as per Atex standards, refer to each panel description for more
details.
Standard safety equipment on all panels: emergency mushroom pushbutton, power on indicator,
and general fault indicator for each monitor.
Standard configuration uses a set of button for all commands, including up/down/left/right
movement. Joysticks are available as option.
Each indicator provides a command or identification plate in Italian or English.
These models of ECP are suitable only for Atex explosive classified areas: see Section C for
control panels certified to be installed in non-Atex (safe area) environment.
NOTE: for exact dimensioning of request, it is very important that customer specifies the
exact Atex classification of area where panel will be installed, to match exact requirement

Advanced monitors equipped with PLC logics inside control panel can be managed in
more complex ways and fully integrated into a wider system.
Typical examples involve the control panel sending inputs to a centralized control
room, when in a big installation it is required a higher level of monitoring and
diagnostics in case of critical failures.
Standard PLC can be equipped with a series of extensions that can expand the
capabilities of a local monitor(s) system without the need of a centralized control room,
and virtually allowing a wider range of possibilities.
Here is a brief overview of some of the most interesting features.
Any solution like the ones presented are studied and developed together with customer
and tailored on their needs, this chapter is only intended to suggest some of the
possibilities that can be engineered.

Complex matrix logics for auto cycles
Picture purely indicative touch screen is fully customizable upon customer needs
Combining several monitors and an array of fire detections that can cover different locations, a
system can be built including a complex matrix of logics and priorities.
In the system shown here, every detection can trigger some of the monitors near the detection
itself, and for each monitor an appropriate automatic cycle is activated.
PLC logics are able also to assign priorities when more than one detection is triggered at the
same time to concentrate effort on most critical areas. Similar priority logics can also control the
max number of monitors operating at the same time, to avoid water outages and ensuring
optimal performances.
LCD touch panel can show in real time the status of each detection, simulate an alarm and
eventually show if a monitor is not operating properly.
All these information can be also sent to a remote control room for additional control and
diagnostics.
Such systems can reduce significantly the total number of installed devices, lowering both initial
investment and costs related to periodic maintenance of devices.
This system is in principle scalable to any number of monitor and any degree of complexity of the
entire system, can be configured in different levels or sub-sets depending customer needs.

Optical fiber and Profibus double
loop interconnections
Picture purely indicative, to be developed during investigation phase
A set of multiple monitors can be inter-connected each other with a proper local network, that
can be conveniently built using ProfiBus connection or optical fibers (either plastic or glass core).
A double loop interconnection is effective especially when additional measures are required to
grant full operativity on the system: even if a catastrophic event occurs on one of the segments
interrupting that path, all the devices are still reachable and controllable, the total flow of
commands and information are preserved.

In presence of power supplies located near monitors, the system is able also to lower significantly
the cost of the global installation: less cables to be routed through the plant, less maintenance
needed and the responsiveness of entire system is well preserved.
Especially when big distances are involved (up to 10 km and more), optical fiber solution is fast,
reliable and requires limited equipment.
Optical fiber based Profibus copper cable based
Long distance without repeaters (10+
km)
Repeaters needed every approx. 300 mt
Higher cost of fibers compared to
Profibus
Profibus cable less expensive than fiber
Installation cost depends also on layout:
long bend radius required etc
Easier installation, similar to building an
Ethernet cabled network
Cables shielded from any external
interference (magnetic, thermal etc)
Cables shielded from any external
interference (magnetic, thermal etc)
Need of OLM optical-electrical
converters at every segment end
Integrated protocol in each PLC, no
need for converters
Every request is to be evaluated for feasibility and cost impact upon receiving offer requests,
based on specs and plans provided by customer.

Remote monitoring, diagnostics and
control
Picture is only an example to show possible applications
PLC expansions can add online connectivity to the system, introducing a set of features based on
web interfaces and thus accessible to every person with a standard PC connected to a properly
configured network.
This additional remote interface is intended mainly to investigate the status of the system, for
remote assistance and diagnostics, or to know in real time the status of each device that the PLC
is controlling or only monitoring.
Additionally an active control can also be granted to the devices, leaving customer the ability to
activate an alarm, start an auto cycle or stop a device that is currently running.
Type of interface, level of access and other restrictions can be obtained by giving different access
privileges based on a user/password method, allowing only authorized persons to operate
remotely on the installed devices.
If customer has several systems in different places, each ECP is capable of this and in principle a
network of installed and owned system can be done, to facilitate a global maintenance service.

General information All electrical equipment (motors, sensors, enclosures, pushbuttons etc) is always identified by
what is called an Ingress Protection (abbreviated in IP) level.
This declaration completes all the usual electrical characteristics of every equipment, and
identifies the resistance offered by a component to the ingress of external bodies, both solids and
liquids.
IP level is always identified by two numbers, as detailed in the table below:
IP m n
m n Protection against solids Protection against liquids
0 Not protected Not protected
1 Protected against objects of size above 50 mm Dripping water
2 Protected against objects of size above 12 mm Dripping water when tilted up to 15°
3 Protected against objects of size above 2.5 mm Spraying water
4 Protected against objects of size above 1 mm Splashing of water
5 Dust protected Water jets
6 Dust tight Powerful water jets
7 Immersion up to 1 m for 30 min
8 Continuous immersion beyond 1 m
Example code:
IP55 Identifies a device resistant to ingress of solid parts of dimensions typical of dust and to exposure to continuous
water jets. This code is the most commonly used for equipment than can resist when installed outdoor.
NOTES:
• If a device is composed of more electrical devices, the overall IP level of the assembly is taken as
the lowest of the individual IP levels, as a conservative measure
• Devices intended for Atex installations carry always an IP level, and additionally have a specific
code that identifies the explosive areas where they are authorized to be installed. For this
additional classification scheme, refer to Appendix B.

General information
When in presence of potentially explosive environment (e.g. fuel storage tanks, refineries, coal mining plants,
chemical plants with hydrogen or other highly flammable gases etc.), a dedicated code is used to define exactly all
the risks related when working in those areas, both for operators and for machines.
Every device used in such particular area, must be as well identified by a code that follows the same guideline: only
machines where the code matches or exceeds the safety measures stated by the area code are allowed to operate in
the area.
Those information are related to the type of explosive substances present
Atex protection level is always identified as in example detailed below:

dust types (so suitable for Zone 1 and Zone 21, but also in lower classification Zones 2 and 22), compliant to
European Atex standards.
Electrical enclosures are of explosion proof type, with an additional augmented safety to contain electrical sparks
during operation.
In presence of gas, enclosures can grant sealing from gases like Ethylene, Liquid Propane and Carbon Monoxide, as
well as all the gases of group IIA.
Its maximum surface temperature in operating condition is granted to be always below 135°C, so it is allowed to
operate in presence of all explosive atmospheres that ignite at temperatures above 136°C.
NOTES: • It is very important, during inquiry phase, that customer specifies the exact Atex classification of an Area, to match
same requirements also on electrical devices.
• Devices with a certain level of explosion protection are suitable for installations in areas of declared lower risk or
category.
• Devices intended for Atex installations carry always also an IP level, that specifies its degree of Ingress Protection. For
this coding scheme, refer to Appendix A.

Flow rate and pressure calculation
Normally all firefighting equipment have declared performances expressed as a combination of the standard
operating flow rate at a well defined pressure.
Customer desiring a different operating condition from what is normally stated in a standard datasheet must always
declare both project parameters, to dimension correctly every device.
For EKM and its discharge devices (FX, EFX, LS and the self-inducting variants), all the performance data are
expressed in liters/minute at a pressure of 7 bar, so it is convenient to revert every value to this condition with a
simple formula
QSTD = QCUS  √(PSTD/PCUS)
QSTD Standard flow rate (expressed in l/min) at 7 bar, to be calculated
QCUS Flow rate required by customer at the device, expressed in l/min
PSTD Standard pressure (expressed in bar): for a monitor and its discharge devices must be used the value of 7 bar
PCUS Pressure calculated at the device by customer, expressed in bar
Example: A customer requires a nozzle discharging 1250 l/min at 4,5 bar: using the formula we obtain
QSTD = 1250  √(7/4,5) = 1560 l/min at 7 bar
So the best suitable nozzle should be the FX-25, with a custom adjustment in the factory to lower the flow rate from
the factory standard of 2500 l/min at 7 bar.
Same formula can be used to properly size a monitor (3” or 4” size choice), the branchpipes and all other
proportioning and discharging equipment
NOTE:
• It is very important, during inquiry phase, that customer specifies the exact flow rate and pressure
to operate the monitor and the discharge device, to avoid incorrect sizing of system
