Universidade Fernando Pessoa was recognized as a public interest organization by the Portuguese State in

July 1996 and it is the result of a pioneering higher education project initiated in the 1980’s with the

creation of two higher education institutes that provided its structural basis. Today, the University has

around five thousand students and is organized in three faculties (Health Sciences, Human and Social

Sciences, Science and Technology), one School of Health Sciences and one autonomous unit (Ponte de Lima

College). Being a foundational University, UFP has never been market oriented. It has managed to develop

into a solid private higher education institution with a strong academic focus and a constant concern with

quality maintenance and improvement in what concerns a highly qualified teaching staff, physical

infrastructures and equipments and its teaching, research and extension project.

UFP sees itself as serving and acting primarily at the national level, even though we understand that

importance of geographical constraints in higher education is being blurred at a very fast pace. We see

ourselves as an active member of our community and our action principles privilege this role, be it in the

form of service providing, be in the development of close relationships with major national socio-

economic actors, in order to promote mutual advancement. Through our Office for Organizational

Quality and Excellence, we are the first Portuguese corporate university, in another pioneering step to

bridge the gap between business and learning, and contribute to the development of Portugal’s economic

agents. Internationally, we want to contribute with our expertise and value to promote a culture of

quality in teaching, scholarship and research in private higher education, to develop, with similar

institutions, national and international channels through which institutional quality cultures can be

recognized, legitimatized, and continually enhanced so that a truly inclusive European Area of Higher

Education can be shaped.

In what would be the height of our educational project we are waiting for the State

to grant us authorization to teach an integrated Masters Degree in Medical

Sciences and because we are committed to make an active contribution to renew

medical teaching and learning by introducing methodological and didactic

innovations, we started in March 2010, the construction of our own hospital

school.

• Philosophy of action :: Assuming that one invests in health and spends in disease, we want to contribute to creating a culture of prevention and preservation of mental and physical well-being, timely controlling and countering as much as possible the extraneous factors that lead to the disruption of the mind / body balance.

• :: Our logic of service and care is therefore primarily pedagogical, investing in a humanized counseling and therapy relationship, compassionate and understanding of the suffering and frailty of patients.

• :: We want to be the central quality hospital that the 200 thousand people who live in Gondomar and in the geographical area directly covered by the HE, have for long desired and deserved.

• :: The HE is also available for international partnerships with like minded institutions and open to serve the growing global demand for quality and affordable health services.

Fernando Pessoa, one of the most original poets of European modernism, was born in Lisbon on the 13 th June 1888. Pessoa’s formal education was British. In 1905 he left for South Africa with his mother and stepfather who had been appointed Portuguese Consul in Durban. Having spent his formative years in South Africa, his first poems were, naturally, written in English. Only upon his return to Portugal and then not immediately, did he begin writing in Portuguese.

Pessoa returned to Lisbon at age 17 expecting to continue his studies. He never did. A few mouths after registering at university he gave up studying and engaged in activities related to publishing and handling foreign correspondence for various commercial firms on the city. Fernando Pessoa’s life and work are intimately connected with Lisbon, its streets and cafés but, it was in Porto that he began his literary activity in Portuguese through his collaboration with the literary magazine Águia and the Movimento da Renascença Portuguesa (Portuguese Renascence Movement).

Writing in Portuguese meant the return to his motherland, after living under the influence of “a great European culture”, to discover that “all the great cities lived within him”. It was this interior life so richly complex that gave birth to Pessoa’s heteronyms. As a child, he addressed letters to himself that he described to an imaginary friend identified as “Le Chevalier de Pas”. Towards the end of his life he wrote to himself: Today I have no personality: all that is human I have divided among the various authors of whose work I have been the executant. I am today the point of reunion of a small humanity, which is only mine.

Fernando Pessoa died in 1935 and, lying in his hospital bed, again in English, he wrote: “I know not what tomorrow will bring”. The future brought him the recognition he did not have outside literary circles during his lifetime. For the future, Pessoa left us the now famous wooden trunk, repository of his literary legacy, filled to the rim with more than 25.000 originals, from poetry and drama to prose texts on philosophy, politics, religion, sociology, occultism, novels and detective stories. Undoubtedly, a small part of a life of restlessness and disquiet among the “small humanity which was only his”, in a quest of discovery of himself and of the world around him.
