    BROADCAST FEATURE

Te audio for broadcast market is setto be well represented at IBC2014with new technologies and market

moves both expected to providetalking points.

    Consoles

Calrec (8.C58), fresh from beingbought by private equity rm ElectraPartners in March (more of whichlater), will have its new Summa audioconsole at IBC.

Essentially a cut-down version ofthe Apollo and Artemis desks, it is,according to the marketing blurb, designed to ensure intuitive operation

in live broadcast applications [and]simplies even complex workowtasks, such as creating mix-minusfeeds, with a highly intuitive GUIsuitable for a broad range ofoperator levels.

Te console is controlled via ahigh-resolution 17in multi-touchscreen that works like a tablet. Teconsoles other large displays are fullycongurable to display bus, outputand loudness meters, and they featurededicated metering, routing, andprocessing information for each fader.

While DiGiCo (8.D70) will beshowing off its consoles at IBC too, itmay also be answering questions about

its merger with Calrec and Allen &Heath.

    DiGiCo managing director James

Gordon is set to become chiefexecutive of the thus-far unnamedgroup, while the current chairman ofAllen & Heath and Calrec, MalcolmMiller, takes on the role of chairman.

Gordon is said to have bold plansfor the group but maintains that itis imperative that each companymaintains its own independenceand style. Te plan for the futureis to share technology and resourcesacross the group and allow someinterconnectivity across the product

lines. It will certainly be an impressiveR&D set-up if all three work together. For now though, and for IBC,

DiGiCo says it will be business asusual with the SD7, SD10, and SD11consoles on show, all with broadcast-specic software.

Te SD7 is the agship model, offering what the company callsmind-blowing I/O capabilities.

It makes use of the companysproprietary Stealth mixing androuting engine and Super FPGA

technology, has three 15in high-resolution touchscreens, each of whichaccommodates a bank of 12 faders, and features 256 processing paths at48kHz/96kHz (or 128 at 192kHz).A powerful beast, it offers eight timesthe oomph of the D5 Live.

At the other end of the scale, theSD11 is the smallest by far of allthe DiGiCo consoles. A 19in rackmount or table top mixer it is alsopowered by Stealth Digital Processingand oating point Super FPGA

technology and because of its size ishighly portable.Consoles are not just made in

Britain, of course. Germanys Stagetec(8.C80) will feature its On Air exat IBC, a broadcast mixing consolethat uses web technologies suchas JavaScript and WebKit (plus a

web server) for its virtual interface, allowing operation and conguration

from any network capable device. Itworks with Stagetecs Nexus modularrouting platform.

On the same stand, sister companySalzbrenner will show the Polaris,

which offers up to 512 free eligiblechannels per DSP frame andtouchscreen. It also makes use ofNexus.

Lawo (8.B50) is promisingsomething special for IBC. All weknow for now is that this additionto the product family boasts highperformance and a new face, with anadvanced feature set based on provenLawo technology. In an unapologetic

show of condence, Lawo describes itas simply unbelievable. Also on show will be the established

mc56 and the mc66 audio mixingconsoles in different frame sizes. Both include the advanced AutoMix,the feature used during the FIFA

World Cup in Brazil to enable theproduction of 32 feeds from just twooperators.

Console makers pooling resources, effective IP-based networking, and automated loudness

control: these are just some of the trends to look out for at this years IBC, writes Will Strauss.

Look out for something special from Lawo at IBC

Wohler will show its agship AMP2-E16V modular audio and video processing monitor

MetroN can function within a largerMediorNet installation, interfacingwith other MediorNet frames via bre.

Tere will be plenty more networkedofferings at IBC, including thoseprovided by Merging echnologies(8.E96). Te Swiss rm is using IBCto display its full range of networkedproducts, many of which are builtaround its MassCore Audio Engine.

Included will be the Ravenna/AES67 networked converters andCoreAudio and ASIO drivers thatallow control from any workstation.

Te Iris Networked Post ProductionSystem will also be on show coupledwith Pyramix and VCube as acomplete solution.

    Studio Recording

    Prism Sound (8.E34) is giving

European debuts to two new audiointerfaces at IBC.

itan and Atlas are multichanneldevices that offer analogue and digitalI/O for Mac or Windows PC atsample rates of up to 192kHz via aUSB interface. Both units also featurethe new MDIO interface expansionslot that can be used, for example, toadd a direct connection to an Avid Proools HDX system.

itan has four microphone inputs, while Atlas has eight, and both aredesigned for multi-track recording,

making use of Prism SoundsCleverClox clocking technology.

Prism Sound will also be showing anupdate to its SADiE 6 recording andediting software that includes optionsfor engineers who want to work withBroadcast WAV (BWF) les thatincorporate ISRC data. Te ISRC inBWF feature is included in SADiEsWAV Master option and is in theSADIE version 6.1 update as part ofthe Mastering Suite and Sound Suitepacks.

Dynamics processing companyJnger Audio (10.A49) will show itsD*AP4 VAP Voice Processor. Designedto make life easier for V productionvoice-over studios and feature lmADR facilities, it features a proprietarySpectral Signature dynamic EQ, a toolthat provides automatic and dynamicEQ control in order to balance spectraldifferences in real-time.

A nifty little innovation, itworks by analysing incoming audioand comparing its spectrum withindividually predetermined voice

ngerprints in order to automaticallyapply dynamic EQ corrections andprovide a consistent sound.

It could prove to be very handy on avoice over or ADR session that takes

place over several days or any otherscenario where tonal inconsistencies ina voice recording could occur.

Still on the subject of dialogue,Nugen Audio will present a softwareapplication with an algorithm thatadapts the dynamic content of audioappropriately for different listeningenvironments and playout systems,

while respecting the level of dialogue inthe original mix and meeting specicloudness criteria. DynApt will be usefulfor things like bringing theatricalreleases to V or making V content

suitable for mobile streaming.Te rst implementation of this

new technology is now available as anextension for Nugen Audios LMBoffline loudness correction system.

    Microphones

Although several of the microphonemanufacturers thatAudio Mediacontacted were keeping their IBC

cards close to their chests, there aresome interesting titbits to reveal.

DPA Microphones (8.D70) forone has come up with a neat wayto give control of mic placement tonon-technical actors or reality showcontestants but still get decentquality sound.

Te d:screet omnidirectionalminiature necklace microphone housesa 4061 miniature capsule inside a softrubber necklace. So, in theory, anyonecan put it on.

Tese microphones are perfect forsituations where fast costume changesare necessary or for reality V shows

where the contestants have to placemicrophones without help from atrained audio engineer, says DPAchief executive Christian Poulsen.

Te necklace design ensures thatthe microphone sits in exactly thesame place on the body every time, sothere is no need for EQ-ing betweendifferent recordings.

    Sony, the company with the

biggest presence at most IBCs, isusing the show to talk about how its

audio technology ts into differentworkows. Te DWX digital wirelessmicrophone series is one exampleafter it was chosen by Scottish V aspart of a newsgathering investment in

XDCAM and digital audio.Sony is pushing the boundaries

of audio quality, striving to providea natural sound in challengingconditions, explains James Leach, the companys European marketingmanager.

Tis has been seen most recentlyon Joss Stones world tour, as the

UWP-D wireless microphone serieshas been helping to capture Josss

journey as she performs in everycountry around the world. At IBC2014, we will be showcasingour audio solutions as part of the

wide offering of broadcast andworkow technologies thatSony offers. www.ibc.org

We ask: What tip(s) would you give topeople attending their first IBC?

Take time to visit all the exhibitors in your main focus hall

(so for us post production Hall 7), you never know what

exciting complementary services to your business there

    are available.

Carrie Russellhead of R&D, channel strategy,

    Audio Network

Wear some comfortable shoes, pace yourself,

the days are long and the evenings out can be even longer!

    Nicki Fishersales director EMEA, Clear-Com

Dont try to do it all in a day. I mistakenly booked a sameday return flight on my first visit to the show and was

astonished at how big it was. Just getting around audio Hall

8 can take a few days, so build enough time in to see it all.

Oh, and bring some comfortable shoes!

    Andrew Lowmarketing co-ordinator,

    HHB Communications

Wait until Sunday to turn up as then you can get a betterdeal on hotels.

Lars-Olof Janflodmarketing & PR director, Genelec

An eye on IBCA host of new products look set to make their debut in the halls of the RAI. We take at look at what tokeep an eye out for and offer some tips on making the most of your trip to Amsterdam.

EVO.Live, Fairlights new generationdigital audio mixing system, will makeits European debut at IBC2014. Basedon Fairlights audio processing andcontrol surface technologies, EVO.Live offers integrated HD video andmultitrack audio recording. A keyfeature of the console is its abilityto switch between live and post-production modes at the touch of abutton so that staff engineers can usethe desk for audio sweetening when itisnt needed for on-air applications.

    Fairlights CO ino Fibaek

says: By combining live and post-production capabilities in a singleconsole, we have succeeded indelivering a product that is moreexible and more cost effective thanany other large-format live broadcastconsole on the market. EVO.Livecustomers will get a much betterreturn on their investment becausethey are effectively getting twoconsoles in one.

HHB and audio post subsidiaryScrub will be joined by co-exhibitorsC Electronic, Dynaudio, Mogami,

and Roland. Loudness experts CElectronic will be launching severalnew additions to its production and

broadcast product ranges. With the DPP (Digital Production

Partnership) le-based delivery targetof 1 October imminent, compliance

with the EBU R128 loudness standardis a hot topic for IBC visitors, andHHB will be exhibiting the latestloudness metering and correction

technologies in hardware and softwarefor acquisition, production, andtransmission.

RW will bring its latest cropof loudness metering solutions toIBC2014. Launched earlier this

year, RWs Masterclass PlugInsLoudness ools software and

M3-Primus will be on display forIBC attendees for the rst time.In addition, executives will be onhand to discuss the companys newsoftware, smart and premium productcategories as well as additional

solutions that RW is planning toreveal during the show.

    Says Andreas weitmann, managing

director, RW: Digital contentproduction is at an all-time high, putting audio needs in the spotlight.IBC is a wonderful platform toshare our latest innovations withprofessionals seeking relevantsolutions for their evolving needs. We

    welcome meeting with attendees and

the open exchange of ideas that thisshow offers.

SSL will announce the releaseof new features for MADI-Bridge,the companys MADI to Dante IPaudio network interface. Part of SSLsNetwork I/O range, MADI-Bridge

is the industrys rst fully broadcast-ready interface between MADI andDante.

Te new features for the MADI-Bridge include bidirectional SampleRate Conversion and a powerful newSplit Mode.

    MADI-Bridge provides an

interface between a Dante IP AudioNetwork and MADI. With 64channels per Bridge at 48kHz, or32 channels at 96kHz, redundantMADI, IP Network ports and PSU,the Bridge is built for uninterruptedfully-redundant operation.

We ask: Whats your least favouritething about IBC?

It is difficult as an exhibitor to be able to get to see

everything you want, as IBC is a busy show and it is difficultto leave the stand. IBCs success hinders us from getting

around to see the technological advances, although this

isnt really a complaint but a compliment!

    Ian Cooksoncommunications manager, Calrec

Maybe not with IBC only but with most broadcast showsbeing so incredibly video centric and that audio is the poor

    cousin in the back seat.

Lars-Olof Janflodmarketing & PR director, Genelec

The overcrowded city of Amsterdam if all exhibitors and

visitors of IBC are in town. Overpriced hotels. Expensive butless good restaurants. Waiting for cabs. Many other cities in

Europe would be more exciting and could do it better.Peter Prsmanaging director, Jnger Audio

The fact that IBC runs over a weekend. When it gets

to Sunday afternoon I always feel like shouting out Gohome to your families all of you! Why are we working all

weekend even on a Sunday afternoon when there is no

real need for any of us to do this. As you might guess I

would far prefer the more conventional Monday or Tuesday

    Thursday show days (like NAB).

    Thomas Dovedirector, Vidcheck

I think that the audio part of IBC has become less

important which I think is a shame as it is as much a part ofa good broadcast experience as anything else.

    Anne Berggreinmarketing manager, DPA Microphones

SSL will highlight new features for MADI-Bridge, its MADI to Dante IP audio network interface

We ask: What are you most lookingforward to about this years show?

Almost everything. Although it seems strange to many,I love tradeshows and look forward to them with great

excitement and expectation. We work really hard to

make them a success and it is great to meet all kinds

of people there, new and old customers, friends, and

competitors, and yes, I do often even have a beer with

competitors. There is also always something new to thinkabout or learn.

    Raphael Samadbusiness development director,

    Emotion Systems

Two things. IBC always generates solid business for

Nugen Audio. Its a very exciting point in the year wherewe consolidate existing plans and embark upon new

relationships, which have often led to entirely new business

opportunities we would not have encountered had we not

attended the show. The other is new ideas. There is always

something at the show I have never come across before, and I am careful to leave at least a few hours open every

year just to walk the floors and see whats new.

    Jon Schorahdirector, Nugen Audio

particular interest is the Glandmastersplice adapter, which is suitable for

voltage distributors of three-phasesupply lines to single-phase loads, fora exible speaker signal management
