Calrec will unveil a brand new audio console at IBC 2009 in Amsterdam. Calrec’s new Artemis console is based on the award-winning Apollo platform, which was launched at NAB in April, and utilizes the same core technologies such as Bluefin2 and Hydra2.

These technologies equip the console with an enormous routingand processing capacity which belies its mid-size footprint. Using a combination of OLED displays, touch screens, and light-emitting knobs the soft Artemis control surface not onlyprovides instant visual feedback, but a flexibility which enablesthe user to reconfigure the desk on the fly.

Artemis utilizes Bluefin2, the next generation of Calrec’strademark Bluefin High Density Signal Processing platform, toprovide substantial resources at multiple sample rates. At 48kHz,Bluefin2 gives Artemis up to 640 channel processing paths, 128 program busses, 64 IFB/Track outputs and 32 auxiliaries.

Artemis also features a second Compressor/Limiter in eachchannel, more than 70 minutes of assignable delay, and threeindependent APFL systems for multiple operator use. Like allCalrec designs, these facilities do not share resources so thatthey are available to the user at all times.

Central to the Artemis console is a dedicated integrated router so that its I/O functions can be performed by Calrec’s next-generation networking system, Hydra2.

Hydra2 uses high capacity 8192 x 8192 cross-point routers and makes available a variety of I/O units to provide analog, AES, MADI, SDI and Dolby E formats. All use copper or fiberconnectivity, and can be fitted with GPIO cards. Console routers can be connected together to form large networks, and stand-alone routers will also be available.

As with all Calrec consoles, the inclusion of full automatic hot-swap redundancy is part of the system architecture – on Artemis all DSP, control processor, router, power supplies, and connections are fully redundant. Like the Apollo console,Artemis houses all processing, including power supplies and all I/O routing in a space-efficient 8U rack.

Since its launch in April, Apollo has been sold to The FountainStudios in London, NTV in Japan, and both the Artemis andApollo consoles are key to broadcast TV operations at theMediaCityUK project in Salford Quays, Manchester, UK.

Coincidentally, the first ever Apollo was delivered to The FountainStudios on the 40th anniversary of the Apollo moon landing -20th July 2009! Artemis, the twin sister of Apollo in Greekmythology, was to supplant Selene as goddess of the moon!

Dome Productions, one of the leadingproduction facility providers in NorthAmerica, has deployed a 64 fader Sigmain Thunder, its newest HD productiontruck. Built as part of Dome’s commitmentto the Vancouver Olympics in 2010, thetruck hit the road in May to cover MajorLeague Baseball in Dome’s hometown ofToronto before heading south to Atlantaand Baltimore for more baseball.

“The launch was very successful. We’vehad great feedback on the truck and onits audio room,” said Mike Johnson ofDome Productions. “It sets up nicely, andeverybody loves to see the familiarplatform. We’ve looked at other consoles, but Calrec’s performance, capabilities, and outstanding support mean it’s still the best solution for us.”

With Thunder, Dome took advantage of the Sigma console’s optional I/Oexpansion to implement a MADI(multichannel audio digital interface) as akey element in the core signal distributionwithin the truck, greatly simplifying signalrouting and reducing the number ofcables, while lowering overall weight andimproving efficiency and air flow.

Built by Dome’s own field shop in Torontoin partnership with systems integratorAZCAR Technologies, Thunder is a front-line truck whose assignments willalso include Stanley Cup coverage for the National Hockey League, CanadianFootball League games, ESPN sports, and concerts.

As one of North America’s leadingproduction facilities providers, DomeProductions offers mobile productiontrucks and fly-packs (high-definition,digital, and analog), telecommunicationsservices (transmission via fiber andsatellite, satellite media tours, andplayouts) and full turnkey host broadcastservices (complete management ofdesign, production, engineering, andoperations). MediaCityUK choose Calrec

Calrec Audio has been awarded thecontract to supply four digital audio mixingconsoles and a distributed I/O networksystem to the MediaCityUK project inSalford Quays, Manchester, UK.

Calrec will supply one 64 fader and two56 fader Apollo consoles for studios A, Band C, and a 24 fader Artemis console forstudio E. All four studios will be used toprovide live to air and live to tape contentfor light entertainment, news and sport.

In addition, all four consoles will benetworked via Hydra2 technology. Thisprovides MediaCityUK with a phenomenalamount of flexibility enabling everyconsole to access all I/O resources on the network.

TSL, the UK’s leading creator of integratedbroadcast systems, was initially engaged by Peel Holdings in 2007 as a consultant, helping to define the Commercial Blockfacilities at the MediaCityUK site.

“From the outset we decided that thegeography of the building and the physicaldivisions of studios, control rooms andeven public spaces should not restrict theaspirations of MediaCityUK’s clientele,”says TSL’s Audio Applications ManagerMartin Dyster. “With this in mind, the ideaof a network of Audio Mixing and Routingsystems which could be centrally andlocally configured, was conceived.

“We are delighted to be working withCalrec to provide one of the mosttechnically advanced TV broadcast audiosystems in the world. The Hydra2 networkinfrastructure dramatically simplifies the integration and operation of audiosystems at MediaCityUK, and the Apollo and Artemis consoles represent a significant advancement in broadcast TV mixing technology.”

The award-winning Apollo console waslaunched at NAB 2009, and the officialglobal launch of the Artemis console is at IBC 2009. Artemis utilizes the samecore technologies such as Bluefin2 and Hydra2, equipping the console withenormous routing and processing capacitywhich belies its modest footprint.

“We are delighted to have been given thisopportunity to help develop MediaCityUK,”says Calrec European Sales ManagerChas Rowden. “MediaCityUK and TSL iscommitted to providing the UK’sbroadcast community with a leading edgefacility comprising unrivalled technical andcreative resources. It is an extremelycomplex project and we believe this kind ofaudio infrastructure will provide the blueprintfor future multi-studio installations. Thecombination of Calrec’s Apollo platformdesks and Hydra2 will allow MediaCityUKto make the most of their infrastructure and maximize efficiency.”

Phase One of the MediaCityUKdevelopment will be completed in 2011.The facility will house one of the largesthigh definition studio facilities in Europe, featuring seven HD television studios and two audio studios. MediaCityUK isbeing developed and managed by PeelMedia, a division of the Peel Group.

The Fountain Studios First in Line for Apollo

In June, two months after the Apolloconsole’s official launch at NAB, Calrecannounced the first Apollo sale toLondon-based The Fountain Studios.

The 72 fader console was delivered in Julyand installed as the final part of a completeHD studio investment programme.

“We are delighted that the first ever Apolloconsole will be installed at Fountain,” saidCalrec’s Business Development ManagerHenry Goodman. “Fountain is behind some of the biggest live entertainmentprogramming in the UK, including “Britain’sGot Talent” and “The X Factor” and we areproud to be associated with them as theycontinue to invest in their facility.”

Apollo integrates a number of substantialtechnological advancements which formthe backbone of future developmentwithin Calrec, the next phase of which can be seen in the Artemis console. Eachdevelopment is unique and powerful in itsown right, but combined they create anincredibly efficient and flexible system thatis scalable to meet future requirements.

Apollo relies on Bluefin2 processing whichprovides unrivalled resources at multiplesample rates. At 48kHz, Bluefin2 givesApollo up to 1020 channel processingpaths, 128 program busses, 96 IFB/Trackoutputs and 48 auxiliaries. At 96kHz,Apollo affords 510 channel processingpaths, 64 program busses, 48 IFB/Trackoutputs and 24 auxiliaries.
