BREEAM (Building Research Establishment’s EnvironmentalAssessment Method) is the world’s foremost environmentalassessment method and rating system for buildings, with250,000 buildings with certified BREEAM assessment ratingsand over a million registered for assessment since it was firstlaunched in 1990. The system sets the standard for best practicein sustainable building design, construction and operation.

A BREEAM assessment uses recognised measures of performance,set against established benchmarks, to evaluate a building’sspecification, design, construction and use.

Credits are awarded across ten categories based on the outcomesof the building assessed. The credits are then combined to providea single score, achieving either a Pass, Good, Very Good, Excellentor Outstanding overall BREEAM rating.

Withmany BREEAM rated projects already successfully utilisingSenior products, we have a wealth of experience to assist the architect/designer in meeting their sustainability goals.

BREEAM credits

The Senior Architectural Systems suite of products allows the specifier to gain credits across a number of categories.

Alongside providing credits in the Materials and Health & Wellbeingcategories, we can also assist in helping you meet the requirementsof the Mat 5 responsible material sourcing category and therebyachieve up to three credits. Senior Architectural Systems holds ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 18001 accreditation, alongside PEFCcertification covering the timber element of the Senior Hybrid range.

Our thermally efficient systems, supported by thermal modelling of the fenestration elements can achieve up to 15 credits within the Ene 1 category.

The company is also able to work with the specifier to quicklydevelop additional features and benefits to gain credits from the Innovation category.

Awarded the highest UK BREEAM rating of‘Outstanding’ in 2009, the new Cardiff offices of Stride Treglown Architects has since invested£60,000 in photovoltaics to become CarbonNeutral. It is now believed to be one of the firstprivately funded offices in the UK to do so.

The building has been designed in an inspiringwedge shape to accommodate over 50 staff ontwo floors in an open plan studio arrangementlinked by an open plan staircase. Using SeniorArchitectural Systems’ Hybrid Series 3 CurtainWall system, energy efficiency is aided by theadoption of a natural ventilation strategy usingBMS actuated Hybrid windows in the walls androof, providing fresh air during the day andcooling at night.

Designed to be naturally ventilated inaccordance with CIBSE guidelines withgenerous floor to ceiling heights, it usesSenior Architectural Systems’ Hybridtimber composite windows and curtainwalling, giving a contemporary, welldesigned and airy feel.

The £12 million, 6,300m2 Primary CareCentre for NHS Lothian provides extensive

accommodation for three GP practices,along with paediatric and adult outpatients

services and a number of clinical anddental facilities.

Incorporating Senior’s thermally efficientHybrid curtain wall, reversible casement

windows for ease of maintenance and SDdoors, the Hybrid system met the

aesthetic and performance requirementsdemanded by the architect achieving a

BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating.

Goscote Palliative Care Centre in the WestMidlands is the first building in the UK toachieve a design stage ‘Excellent’ rating

under BREEAM Healthcare.

Forming part of a LIFT scheme, the two-storey 2,500m2 building provides a

range of new inpatient and outpatient adult palliative care services and has been

constructed around an envelope of Senior’sHybrid curtain wall and window system, and

fully compatible SPW600 thermally brokenentrance doors.

The engineered timber of Hybrid is a perfectmatch for the timber-clad bullnose pillar,

which is a major design feature at theentrance to the building.

Leicester’s latest newly built school has beencreatively designed and fitted with a suite ofaluminium doors, windows and curtain wall fromSenior Architectural Systems’ high performanceranges, which collectively account for around60% of the building’s facade.

The building is simple and functional, yet theimpressive result is a reflection of the school’saim to inspire and reflect the rich and diversecommunity it serves.

Hybrid windows

Employees at the new five-storey civic officesof Wakefield Metropolitan District Councilhave a brighter outlook on the city centre

thanks to 2,500m2 of glazing.

The building, 123,000 sqft of prime officeaccommodation, is a key part of the city’s

Merchant Gate redevelopment programme,and occupies an elevated site above the city’s

main rail hub.

The building highlights Senior’s Hybrid curtainwall and windows set against bespoke picture

frame aluminium panels. Open-plan officespace, with a central atrium, extensive glazing,

external rainscreen cladding and terracottatiles, completes the design.

This unique building was the largest pre-fabricated straw bale constructionproject in the UK when Rushcliffe BoroughCouncil gave planning approval. Timber andstraw used in the construction was sourcedlocally from the University’s own farmland.

The building has been positioned tominimise solar gain and interact with itssurroundings. The facade design takes itsinspiration from the natural rhythm of thetree line adjacent to the site, and thebuilding has achieved a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating.

The buildings were designed in favour of anorganic, curved form which is in sympathy to

the surrounding woodland and producesvitality and controlled spaces within. the

project won the Mid Sussex Design Award,which pays particular attention to designs

that focus on high quality and sustainability.

The primary school was the first new buildparent promoted self governing school in thecountry, and required a number of innovative

solutions to address the aspirations of theclient groups. The use of Senior’s Hybrid

Series 3 curtain wall produced a light andinviting environment for children to learn and

develop within their home village.

Reflecting the campus’ status as an innovator,the three-storey steel-framed StourbridgeCollege art and design faculty features dramaticangular glazing to nine elevations, using SeniorArchitectural Systems’ SCW aluminium curtainwalling and SPW300 series aluminium windows.

The glass fronted atrium forms a galleryshowcase for exhibiting college sculpture andartwork. Dominating the skyline on the formerBrier School site at Brierley Hill, and backingonto the Dudley Canal, the building is set at thefront of the site leaving space for furtherdevelopment as future funding allows.

Cheshire Oaks at Ellesmere Port is Marks & Spencer’s mostcarbon efficient store to date. Named an ‘Eco Store’, the siteis the retailer’s second largest commercial premises and has

been designed to minimise the environmental impact ofbusiness operations through every aspect of its design,

construction and ongoing use.

This commitment to sustainability placed stringent designrequirements on the new store, leading to Senior

Architectural’s high-performance, high-insulation Hybridtimber and aluminium composite curtain walling system

being selected, and helping the store be awarded an overall BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating.
