A bit late I know, but as this is the first 2009 issue of

“It’s All About Boscombe” may I and the team wish you

all our very best wishes for the New Year.

It’s going to be a tough year for so many of us, but I’d

rather not stir up more doom and gloom and as such

would ask everyone to support the businesses in the

town. The later part of 2008 saw the sad demise of

more than a few businesses and I would urge you all to

do your bit to ensure the town is able to sustain it’s

extremely varied range of traders whom together give

us the widest range of shopping experiences anywhere

on the South Coast.

Throughout this edition you’ll find some great offers . . .

be sure to take them up . . . they won’t last forever!

Don’t forget, you can contact me at my email address,

[email protected] with any news, information,

events or chit-chat . . . all feedback is gratefully accepted.

regeneration scheme is not being held back by therecession. A new seafront venue is being created on ourdoorstep which will continue to boost the localeconomy for decades to come.

Our commitment remains as strong as ever. I'mdelighted that we've reached this significant milestoneby continuing the land-based elements and completingthe base layer of the reef. I know that many residentsand in particular the local surfing community,Boscombe traders and hoteliers have been watchingthis fascinating project closely and are as keen as I amto see it completed. But I also know that they recognisethat this is a long-term investment and will share mydetermination to get this right and bring a reef toBoscombe that the town can be proud of, and bring theeconomic and regeneration benefits.”

For information and updates on the Boscombe SpaVillage regeneration programme and the surf reefvisit www.bournemouth.co.uk

The Surf ReefThe base layer of Bournemouth's innovative artificialsurf reef is approximately the size of a football pitchand is now complete. The 37 specially designed geo-textile bags that create the base layer have beenanchored to the sea bed and pumped hard with morethan 7,000m3 of sand.

Further to the confirmation last week that the weatherwas continuing to cause problems, BournemouthCouncil and ASR Ltd have now agreed to suspendconstruction for the winter, as the shorter days andwinter weather do not permit long enough workingsessions for safe and effective construction on thismajor underwater project. ASR has agreed that they willset up back on site next April, when weather conditionsare more favourable again.

Difficult weather conditions over the summer monthsbrought about a later than anticipated start to theproject, with the first bags being deployed on-site onFriday 29th August 2008. This has inevitably had aknock-on effect to the anticipated completion date, andASR Ltd believes that the expected weather conditionsover the winter months will make it impossible tocomplete the reef this year, as originally planned.

The ASR team have now packed up their equipment andare set to return in April 2009, with completion bySeptember 2009, weather permitting.

Cllr Beverley Dunlop, Cabinet Member for Economy andTourism said, “We are really pleased that this pioneering

A passion for photography was alwayssomething I had going on in the background as ahobby, but moving to Boscombe was the catalystfor a complete career shift. The move enabledme to live close to the beach, and signalled anew creative focus in my business life.

After an international twenty year career in theautomotive industry, specialising in robotic paint systems,I've found my passion in both photography and increatively working with individuals and businesses to helpthem achieve greater things. The change came aboutwhen I started learning about Personal Development andNLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming and Hypnosis). Thisled me to train as a coach, and in helping other peopleachieve their goals and break down barriers, I was able totap into my own creativity, and discovered an ability tocapture photographic images which show the true natureof people and places.

Recently I've been lucky enough to do promotional photoshoots for the record label Universal Music, with newartists such as up and coming singer Imelda May. Afterdoing some shots whilst Imelda was in makeup,Hollywood director Julien Temple chose the vintagemakeup mirror I'd selected as a prop, as the start and endfeature for Imelda's latest video, (www.imeldamay.com)~ that was a great day!

Local online TV station (www.isstv.tv) asked me to do aninterview with legendary celebrity photographer Terry

Spotlight on . . . Sean Gardiner

O'Neill, which I loved doing, despite being a little nervous! It'sa real contrast to working in the automotive industry, but is somuch more rewarding. I've also been getting involved inhelping run Bournemouth's 'BomoCreatives', a unique socialnetworking group especially for creative people of all kinds(www.bomocreatives.co.uk).

Hot off the press

The FJB Chine Hotel in Boscombe Spa Road haveselected some of Sean's fantastic images for theirbeautifully refurbished reception and restaurant, to“capture the essence” of the spectacular surroundingarea for visitors and guests.

Food bites ~ Spice up your Valentines Day!

I bag of plain tortilla chips 250 g grated cheese 1 jar ready- made salsa 1 ripe avocado

1 clove garlic, crushed 1 lime 1 tomato

If you are cutting back on your spending orwant to avoid the last minute panic of bookinga table at a restaurant, you can always surpriseyour loved one by cooking a gorgeous threecourse meal at home on Valentines Day. If you have never considered Mexican food to be sexy, here are some things to think about. Chillies get theblood rushing, your heart pumping and releaseendorphins that give you a natural high. Avocados werereferred to by the Aztecs as ''ahuacat''meaning testicle. The Aztecs considered avocados so powerful thatmaidens had to stay home during the harvest.Chocolate contains a chemical called phenylethylaminethat is released naturally in the human body whenyou're in love!To make a love-inspiring feast at home, try this menu.Don't forget it's important to set the scene: turn off theT.V., light some candles, and make the table beautiful.

Method

To make the guacamole: mash the avocado andcombine with crushed garlic, chopped tomato, and thejuice of 1 lime. Put to one side.

PLEASE MENTION “IT’S ALL ABOUT BOSCOMBE” WHEN REPLYING TO ADVERTS16

Nachos with Salsa and Guacamole Spread a layer of tortilla chips onto a plate and sprinklea layer of grated cheese and a thin layer of the salsa ontop. Repeat until you have two layers.

The Nachos can be finished off either under the grill orin the microwave.

Don't cook them until you are ready to eat- they takearound four minutes in a microwave and need to cookjust long enough for the cheese to melt. Serve toppedwith a spoonful of guacamole.

2 onions thinly chopped 5 tbs peanut butter 1 small square 70%dark chocolate400 ml tin choppedtomatoes500 ml chicken stock 3 cloves crushed garlic

1 tsp Cinnamon 1/2 tsp nutmeg1/4 tsp cloves 1/4 tsp of star anise I tsp of hot chilli powderor 1 fresh chopped chilli 2 tbs of butter 2 chicken breasts

Method

Fry the onions in 2 tbsp of oil until transparent.

Add the crushed garlic, and the spices. Stir together.

Next add the peanut butter, chicken stock, andtomatoes. Simmer for ten minutes. Remove from theheat and puree in a blender or mixer.

Return to the heat and add the chocolate. Simmer forhalf an hour.

Brown the chicken breasts in the butter on top of thestove. Add the poblano sauce, cover, and simmer for10- 15 minutes or until the chicken is done.

Serve with baked sweet potatoes or rice and garnishwith fresh pomegranate seeds.

Chicken in Poblano Sauce

For afters, I would suggest fresh strawberries anda Lovely Chocolate Martini:

This dish contains both chilli and chocolate ~ both ofwhich are known aphrodisiacs!

The true Poblano sauce can take anywhere from3 hours to 3 days to prepare and requires all kinds ofexotic ingredients. My recipe is a simpler version, withmost ingredients available from Lidl or Aldi.

(You can buy the chicken breast already boned fromE Brown Butchers on Palmerston Road).

Put about six ice cubes in a cocktail shaker.Add 11/2 fl oz of vodka Add 31/4 fl oz of white cream de cacao Strain and pour into Martini glass which has beenrimmed with cocoa powder.Drop a Cadburys chocolate star into the bottom.Indulge:-)

That probably means you’re the romantictype. Yes, I see it now, I’m gazing into your starry eyesand I see Roses roses, yes, definitely roses,(sorry about that), yes, roses, champagne, andsoft toys.Yes, it’s that time of year again. Spring is here, and a young woman’s thoughts turn toromance, and a young man’s thoughts turn tothat emotion that rhymes with sussed, whichis what he will be when he turns up with thecuddly bear. A cuddly bear, that’s cute.At any other time of year we’ll raise a scepticaland perfectly groomed eyebrow at gifts any lesstechnologically advanced than an iPod or a Wii,but on February 14th we expect people toaccept any old rubbish that was designed for a3 year old to go to bed with and say “ahhh”.One of you is wondering if this has done thetrick and the other is desperately trying to

remember what they had done to give the impressionthat they really were this easy. But the sales figures never lie. It may be a juvenile andcorny approach but the Teddys of this world tell me thatit works, if not every time, enough times. Then there are those who go down the jewellery route, let’s call them the Samuels. They buy the expensive(looking) necklace, bracelet or earrings, and they wantmaximum return for their investment, or to put itcrudely, more bangs for their bucks, and you can readthat any way you see fit. These guys are forward looking and playing the longgame. The Teddy might catch the right mood forValentines Night, and the weekend after that, and thewhite bear with pink bits could even meet the Easterbunny if he’s lucky, but what girl is going to take him outand show him off to her mates?

The Samuels know the power of marketing. Gold andsilver body adornment does just as good a job as Teddywith the added benefit of simultaneously advertisingthe buyer as someone with money, taste and style, especially if they have actually got money, taste andstyle. The bling is aimed at a key demographic ~ theFG1s (friends of girlfriend) ~ with the subtle subliminalmessage “when she’s finished with him I wouldn’t mindsome of that”. Now that’s really cute. Why doesn’t everyone aspire to something a bit lessobvious on this most obvious of days? Why not offercharm? (and I don’t mean another bracelet.)Being charming means finding a gift that shows that youactually listen to your partner. Take a genuine interest inwhat makes them tick, as a human being. What are theypassionate about? Buy them something related to thispassion that they would never have thought of buyingfor themselves. Being charming means encouraging them to talk abouttheir interests, and not interrupting them so you cansteer the conversation round to your own interests.Being charming creates a genuine connection betweenyou that will last a long time. Why not give it a try? Someone once said that “Charm is a way of getting theanswer yes without having asked any clear question”and on Valentine’s Day what could be cuter than that?
