PLEASE SUPPORT OUR LOCAL BUSINESSES
Welcome to the first issue ofThe YES Mag Directory, your localindependent business guide. The purpose of this monthly magazine is to serve you,
the residents of Conwy, and to support the local businesses that operate in or closeto the area. Studies show that people like to buy on their doorstep whenever they can, and now you have areference guide to enable you to do just that.
In addition to featuring local businesses and trades, you will see there is plenty of useful information. and moreto come over the following months as the directory grows. However, we certainly dont have the exclusive on
good ideas, so if there is anything you would like to see featured, do please call or e-mail your suggestions. Wewould particularly like to include any community news.
Each month we will run special business features giving you more information about some of the companies thatadvertise. This month we are featuring The Queen Victoria, Church Walks, which has recently been refurbishedand Chernobyl Children. The directory will be delivered every month into two alternating areas ofConwy .
If you like this directory and would like to see it continue, then please help us by supporting the businesses thatappear. When you do call them, please make sure you mention YES Mag. Finally, if you own a business in thearea, then you should be advertising with us. Our advertising rates are really good valuewe dont even chargeVAT!
Best Wishes

February Gardening
Weather permitting, now is the
time for you to venture outside
to do some real gardening after
the winter downtime. Use February to
finish off any winter work and prepare as
much as possible for the rest of the gar-
dening year by pruning, digging and tidy-
ing.
Beware, however, of frosts and snow.February is still very much winter in most
parts of the country, so don't plant out
anything new just yet. Instead, prepare as
much as possible for the coming growing
season.
Finish off any winter digging to allow the
weather and probable frosts to help break
down large clods of soil. If possible, avoid
walking on the lawn as the sodden ground
will quickly compact turning it into a kind
of concrete and you will ruin the grass forthe rest of the year. Why make extra work
for yourself?
If you intend to create a new flower bed,
now is the ideal time to prepare the
ground. Mark out the shape of the new
bed using string, a hosepipe or a trail of
sand as it's very easy to get carried away
with your digging so you end up with amuch larger bed than you intended. If your
new bed is located in existing lawn, resist
the temptation to just turn over the turf.
Grass grows best where you don't want it,
and you'll end up with a grassy flower bed
for years to come. Remove the turf and
either reuse it elsewhere, or compost it.
Dig over the soil as deeply as you can,
incorporating plenty of well-rotted manureas you go.
Snowdrops will be coming to the end of
their flowering period so to get even more
of these gorgeous blooms divide the plants
after the flowers have faded but while the
leaves are still green. This is known as in
the green' and snowdrops will only propa-
gate if you transplant them like this. You
may have bought many snowdrop bulbs inthe past, yet have none of these beautiful
flowers to show for your money. This is
because snowdrops really only grow well
when planted in the green'.
Cut back ornamental grasses to about12cm above the crown. They'll grow
quickly and be even healthier than before.
Pruning stimulates vigorous new growthand many plants require this to flourish.
Dogwood is another that will benefit from
a good cut-back. Now that you've had the
pleasure of the stunning colour they pro-
vide through the winter, prune the stems
down to ground level ready to shoot again.
The brightest colours next winter will
come from the new growth.
Summer and autumn flowering clematis
should also be pruned back hard. The
speed of growth during spring is incredi-
ble and will mean you will have a spec-tacular floral display later in the year.
Winter-flowering jasmine should also be
cut back once the flowers have faded.
Other plants to prune now are ornamental
vines such as Virginia creeper and ivy. It'sa good idea to feed any plants that have
been pruned as they will use a lot of en-
ergy producing new growth.
Towards the end of the month, you can
start feeding your entire garden with an all
-purpose fertiliser to boost the spring
growth spurt. Mulching is something that
should really wait until the
soil is a little warmer.

FEBRUARY
February was named after the Latin term februum which means purification, via
the purification ritual Februa held on February 15 in the old Roman Calendar
January and February were the last two months to be added to the Roman calen-
dar, since the Romans originally considered winter a monthless period. They were addedby Numa Popilious about 700 BC. February remained the last month of the calendar year
until the time of the decemvirs (c. 450 BC), when it became the second month. At cer-
tain intervals February was truncated to 23 or 24 days and a 27-day intercalary month,
Intercalaris was inserted immediately after February to realign the year with the seasons.
Under the reforms that instituted the Julian Calendar Intercalaris was abolished, leap
years occurred regularly every fourth year (after a few years of confusion), and in leap
years February gained a 29th day. Thereafter, it remained the second month of the calen-
dar year, meaning the order that months are displayed (January, February, March, ,
December) within a year-at-a-glance calendar. Even during the Middle Ages, when thenumbered Anno Domini year began on March 25 or December 25, February continued
to be the second month whenever all twelve months were displayed in order. The Gre-
gorian Calendar reforms made slight changes to the system for determining which years
were leap years and thus contained a 29-day February.
Historical names for February include the Anglo Saxon terms Solmonath (mud month)
and Kale-monath (named for cabbage) as well as Charlemagnes designation Hornung.
In Finnish, the month is called helminkuu meaning "month of the pearl"; when snow
melts on tree branches, it forms droplets, and as these freeze again, they are like pearls ofice. In Ukranian, the month is called meaning the month of ice or hard frost.Patterns
February starts on the same day of the week as both March and November in common
years, and August in leap years.
Having only 28 days in common years, it is the only month of the year that can passwithout a single full moon. It is also the only month of the calendar that once every six
years and twice every 11 years, will have only four full 7-day weeks. Where the first day
of the month starts on a Sunday and the last day ends on a Saturday, this was observed in
2009 and can be traced back 11 years to 1998, another 11 years back to 1987, and 6
years back to 1981; and so on twice 11 years consecutively and once six years either
forward into the future or back into the past, unless the pattern is broken by a skipped
leap year, but no leap year has been skipped since 1900 and no others will be skipped
until 2100. A year of this kind would be a common year starting on Thursday It cannot
happen in a leap year. 2004, which was a leap year, would have observed this format hadit been a common year.

Valentine's Day
Valentine's Day orSaint Valentine's Day is a holiday celebrated on February 14th
by many people throughout the world. In the English-
speaking countries, it is the traditional day on which lovers
express their love for each other by sending Valentines
cards, presenting flowers, or offering confectionery. The
holiday is named after two among the numerous Early
Christian martyrs named Valentine. The day became asso-
ciated with romantic love in the circle of Geoffrey Chaucer
in the High Middle Ages, when the tradition of courtly
love flourished.
The day is most closely associated with the mutual ex-change of love notes in the form of "valentines". ModernValentine symbols include the heart-shaped outline, doves,
and the figure of the winged Cupid. Since the 19th century,
handwritten notes have largely given way to mass-produced greeting cards. The
sending of Valentines was a fashion in nineteenth-century Great Britain, and, in
1847, Esther Howland developed a successful business in her Worcester, Massachu-setts home with hand-made Valentine cards based on British models. The popularity
of Valentine cards in 19th century America, where many Valentine cards are now
general greeting cards rather than declarations of love, was a harbinger of the future
commercialization of holidays in the United States. [It's considered one of the Hall-
mark holidays
The U.S. Greeting Card Association estimates that approximately one billion
valentines are sent each year worldwide, making the day the second largest
card-sending holiday of the year, behind Christmas. The association estimates
that, in the US, men spend on average twice as much money as women

Th e r e s aw a r d r o b eaccessory for
women that can beused to dress anoutfit up or down, canbe a piece of art, isimmensely useful, away to express yourpersonality and even better, it will alwaysfit. What is this miraculous item? Ahandbag!
The right handbag can effortlessly pullan outfit together so you look stylish andbesides, its also extremely practical. Youcan wear simple clothes, jeans and a t-shirt, which together with a lovely bag will
look amazing. Whereas, someone alldressed-up but carrying a tatty handbag
just looks as if they dont care aboutthemselves.
Whether you choose a timelessclassic or a trendy style, the right bag canmake you feel sexy, chic, elegant, sophisticated, casual, dainty, or business-like.
Handbags come in any colour, most
materials and can sometimes become anobsession. The perfect one is oftenelusive, which results in a cupboard full ofunused items. It is important therefore totake time to try on handbags, the sameway as you try on clothes and alwaysdecide what you actually need beforebuying.
Choosing the right bag should betreated as an expedition. Take your
lifestyle into consideration; a woman whospends her summers camping will choosesomething completely different from thelady who lunches at the Ritz, while amother with small children will needsomething hardwearing and practical.
No longer will a single bag suit alloccasions. The modern girls diverselifestyle means she needs a dream set ofbags. The ideal basic collection a woman
should own is: a daily work bag to hold allthe necessities for the day, a social bagfor those casual nights out or shoppingtrips, a glamorous evening bag for special
events and a fun bag which brightensyour mood.
Different bags suit different peopledepending on their size and body shape.Having said that a handbag always fits, carefully choosing a bag that flatters canemphasise your good points and drawattention away from those parts of your
figure that youre less happy with.Concentrating on shoulder bags here aresome pointers to help you choose theideal style.
Choose a bag that is the opposite ofyour body shape. So if you are tall andslim, select a slouchy, rounded bag whilea shorter, heavier person should go for atall, rectangular shaped bag. The rounderyour figure, the more structured your bag
should be. As a general rule, pick a bagthat lies in the middle of your body as thislength will complement most figures.Longer or shorter straps will drawattention down or up.
Top-heavy women should choose astyle that draws attention down, so selecta bag that has a long strap while the mostflattering style for a curvy lady is one thatsits just above the waist.
Proportion is also important; a tiny bagon a tall, large woman will make her lookenormous, while a huge bag on a petiteperson will make her look worn by thebag, rather than the other way around.
A lot of women buy a handbag justbecause it is fashionable. Dont base yourhandbag choice solely on trends; it shouldlast longer than that. Also, a handbagdoesnt have to match your outfit, but it
should complement it.
