Introduction

Antony Waste Handling Cell Private Ltd (AWHCPL), an offshoot of Antony group of

companies, Mumbai is one among the leading players in the field of solid waste management in the

country. This concern of the Antony Group had its birth, ten years back and at present the company is in

its full throttle with a mission and strong commitment of keeping some of the major metropolitan cities

of India clean and green with its main role in the capital city of India, Delhi.

The company has got the latest technical know-how and practices the same trends in India as is

practiced in some of the developed nations of the world. Most modern machineries are imported into the

country in order to deliver eco-friendly city cleaning services and various waste processing techniques

as well. The company has executed more than seventeen major projects till date and is further planning

on intensifying its activities to different parts of the nation by entering into the related ventures and

executing it with the latest technology in the industry. At present the company has a well setup refuse

transfer station and engineered land filling station. In its future plans, the company is planning to enter

much more sophisticated and critical environmental projects in collaboration with international players

in the field of engineered landfill setup, hazardous waste management composting plants, biomedica

waste treatment plants etc.

Antony LARA Enviro Solution Pvt Ltd is a joint venture formed under the leadership ofAWHCPL, with a Brazilian firm to execute a massive prestigious project of processing and land filling

of 4000 tonnes per day of Mumbai waste with a combination of various other latest processing

techniques.

Solid Waste Management (SWM)

The solid waste generation has been an ongoing phenomenon since the beginning of the

mankind. Different kinds of solid wastes are generated as a result of various human activities in different

sectors and hence arises the necessity of waste management. Solid waste generated includes recyclable

and non recyclable wastes which have to be handled separately and with care. The different sources of

waste includes mainly residential wastes, commercial wastes, municipal wastes, industrial wastes,

agricultural wastes, radioactive and hazardous wastes and treatment wastes. These different sources

generate huge amount of wastes daily. Waste management, hence, is broadly classified into municipa

SWM, industrial waste management, bio-medical waste treatment, agricultural waste treatment and

hazardous waste treatment.

The project on which I had done the internship included mainly municipal solid waste

management from two zones of the six zones of Delhi. As and according to the management staff, any

solid waste management is divided into 5 functional units namely

1.  Onsite storage

2.  Collection

3.  Transport and transfer

4.  Resource recovery and energy conservation

5.  Disposal

1. Onsite Storage

The onsite storage is a temporary storage of solid waste in a container or in a medium size

storage room (Dhalao, a local name of these storage rooms) built at necessary locations on the basis of

the rate of waste generation data collected at the primary stage of the project. It includes the primary

collection of waste from different parts of an assigned locality by different means like;

1. Curbside collection.

2. Alley collection.

3. Setout Setback collection.

4. Setout collection.

5. Backyard carry.

After the primary waste collection, they are stored into differently sized containers and into the

store houses and left apart for the collection services. After the waste is collected in the storage rooms

(Dhalaos), employees are assigned into each storage room for sorting out wastes into categories of

degradable and non-degradable kind. As soon as the sorting is done, these wastes are stored into two

containers of capacity 4.5 cubic meter each one of green colour for the degradable waste and another of

 blue colour for non-degradable wastes.

2. Collection

Hauled container system Collection forms the second functional unit of solid waste management. After completing the

sorting out procedures in the respective store-houses, the supervisors in-charge of the respective store

houses informs the secondary collection unit and the required number of collection vehicles is sent to

different locations to collect the bins from the dispatch station. The mounting process of the bins on to

the truck takes place at the location and then they flee towards the secondary storage locations. This type

of secondary collection is known as hauled container system as the container is hauled from the store-

house to the dispatch station and thereafter the empty container is taken back to the store house.

 S tationary Container  S  ystem

Another kind of collection is the stationary container system in which the street corner bins are

unloaded into the truck either mechanically or manually into the truck at its container location itself. For

this purpose, special compactor trucks are used which are mounted with special hydraulic systems that

could take and unload the loaded street corner bin into the truck mechanically. After loading the truck,

the self mounted compactor compacts` the unloaded waste into its own container and then the compactor

truck moves to the next container location. The compactors used in the project were Heil Compactorswith a container capacity of 10cubic meter. The street corner bins were designed for a capacity of 650

litres to 800 litres each and the bins were provided with a lid to prevent the odour and aesthetic nuisance

as well.

 S atellite vehicles

A new methodology has been adopted in loading into the compactor trucks with the help of

satellite vehicles, which collect waste from remote locations, where the container placement and

conveyance of the compactor truck is difficult, and unload it into the compactor truck halted somewhere

nearby the collection area. The project makes use of remodelled Tata Aces as the

satellite vehicles with hydraulic systems mounted on to the vehicle to impart a mechanical tipping action

that saves time and imparts ease of work.

3. Transfer and Transport

The transfer and transport operation forms the third functional unit of the solid waste

management. It simply means the transporting of compacted waste from the dispatch station either to the

disposal area or to the resource recovery and energy conservation plant. In the secondary collection site

or the dispatch station the collected waste is compacted with the help of compactors and it is loaded into

a container of capacity 20cubic meter and it is then transferred to the disposal or the energy conservation

plant. The container along with the compacted waste is loaded on to the truck with a hook lifting

arrangement.
